This dude seems like a dick.
HOWEVER.
Can we stop with the 'mansplaining' shit? Such a dumb trend.

I know, right? One day there will be no mansplaining, it'll be great.

You know that's not what I meant.
It's a stupid term for stupid people.

Totally, people who mansplain are seen as stupid!

Hilariously, he was the one who brought it up. The thread had nothing to do with any of this. It was a meme labeled "[Name of my town] Middle Age Woman Starter Pack" and he somehow took offense on behalf of his wife, who apparently did not fit into the local stereotype, even though the other 50 women who commented on the thread felt like it was spot on.

People take offence to those things all the time here? But a man point out that he finds it offensive, God forbid!!!

Please look again at the way he expressed his feelings about the term and tell me he's not a huge tool. He couldn't have been more condescending.

Can you think of a better term for it? Because it's definitely a thing. I have had men condescendingly "explain" concepts to me that I already have a better grasp of than them on numerous occasions in my life. Or even worse, when some asshole tries to "explain" my own feelings to me because he "knows how the female brain works." It's fucking infuriating. Obviously not all guys do this, but a certain subset of them do, and it definitely takes a certain degree of male privilege to think you can get away with something so obnoxious.

When my mom first learned about mansplaining her reaction was "So THAT'S what men have been doing to me my whole life!"

Man, I wish I could speak like that on my feet.
He hit the nail on the head.

See, you're asking 'why not? while I'm asking 'why?'.
You just used the term 'condescendingly explain'. Works perfectly. Or even just 'condescend to'. Great!
My point is, we all act as if 'mansplaining' is a term that exists on it's own merits, because it describes a unique phenomenon. And I think we all know on some level that it doesn't. The only unique thing about the word 'mansplain' is the fact that it refers to and generalises the actions and behavior of a particular gender.
So if you're...
one- downvoting me
and
two- the type who dislikes being called 'irrational' or 'bitchy' or 'hysterical' or 'bossy' or even 'slutty' or a 'whore'
...at least have the self-awareness and decency to recognize the hypocrisy of trying to force this dumb internet neologism into everyday normal-people vernacular.

It is called mansplaining because there are men who assume women are less informed and less knowledgable about something because they are women. It's a very apt term in my eyes.

Yep, and there are women who are too overbearing but I don't go around telling every woman who speaks with a bit of authority that 'she should tone it down because women are too bossy'.
Because that would be shitty.
There are women who too often rely on emotion rather than reason, but I don't tell every girl who wants to tell me how they're feeling that they're 'just being irrational- which is just like women'.
BUT SOMEHOW it's all well and cool, when a guy engages in a discussion and shares his opinion or experiences, to label him as a 'mansplainer'.
'b-but what if the guy is actually being an asshole? then he totally deserves it!!1'
In a situation where a female friend gets a ticket, it's a huge dick move to say something along the lines of 'it figures, that's so typical of a woman'. i.e. even if the charges are valid and statistics support the observation, YOU are the person being adversarial and reducing the discussion to a snide ad-hom against an (irrelevant!) group the person is a part of. It's a shitty thing to do, and it's baffling how so many people that are ordinarily pro-gender-equality seem to love to use the term.
TL:DR You're just being a dick and I think, on some level, you know it. Why is it so hard to say 'actually, I already know about this'?
