I actually like the Tiger I.
I think it was an effective weapon for a little while when it was introduced.
I like the way it looks, and I always have.
I've got a good bit of respect for this tank due to when it was first introduced. It had thickish frontal armor, a damned good gun, and was probably legitimately scary to go up against in an early Sherman or T-34 before being upgunned.
But keep in mind, this is all for it's time. By the end of the war it was terribly outdated and armored warfare evolved past it's shortcomings and it was really let down. But I still think it was better than the P.O.S. Panther or Tiger II, which is kinda like saying 'Oh goodie, I've got herpes, the best of the sexually transmitted diseases.' Don't get me wrong, it was still very unreliable and a terrible idea to produce for a country that had it's back against the wall and was running pretty low on resources, so I'm not a full Wehraboo on the matter, but I think sometimes we hit it a bit too hard judging it against late-war tanks, when it's an older design from 1942 that didn't have the advantage of adaptability that those tanks did. This doesn't really help it's case for the whole war, just from 1942 to about 1944 when the Easy 8s and '34-85s came to counter it reliably (The baseline 75 M4 and 76 '34 could still hurt it from the sides and rear pretty easily, so it wasn't really invincible to them either, just tough to crack from the front.)
I can also see where some of the stories of a Tiger holding up a group of Shermans might come from, as a Tiger in a favorable situation and environment without suffering any mechanical problems could be a force to be reckoned with. But then we've got situations like in Italy where a Sherman ambushed a group of Tigers from behind and blew 'em to hell, so I take every one of these 'kill counts' with a grain of salt.
It's kinda like the M3 Lee (In North Africa, not when Russia got them a little too late.) - great for the time, terrible for the rest of the war. But again, THIS DOES NOT MAKE IT A GOOD TANK, NOR AM I SAYING IT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED ONE. Especially against it's domestic competition. Yeesh. At least in the modern day we can keep one of these things actually running, unlike some other German tanks...
So I guess I'm about 1/100th Wehraboo when it comes to the Tiger. I am ashamed and I am sorry. I will pray to saint Patton every night before bedtime to overcome this crisis of faith.
