It's actually oddly fitting Valve's communication about a host being canned in the middle of event, instead of an official release, is a reddit post by their CEO

Is nobody going to talk about how they also just slapped a dick on the entire production crew of Perfect World?

Like really Gaben just came out and delivered the haymaker to everyone involved and said go fuck yaselves.

Billionaire Gabe Newell just publicly called a well loved esports figure an ass and fired him during a 3 million dollar esport event which was a disaster because of an awful production crew while James' entertainment was the only thing making it tolerable. Gabe Newell has now officially spoken more about James Harding than fucking Half Life 3. A few years ago no one would have ever predicted this bizarre world we now live in.

I can feel that Valve is seething with anger...normally they'd post some sterile and professional press release on their blog like they did for Diretide. For them to send Gabe to reddit to call someone an ass (after a full work day of thinking about what to do and trying to fix things) is quite remarkable. Bruno is probably saying "my bad, guys" right about now.

Yames has to post his side now. We now have a drama void that must be filled. If he won't we'll fill it ourselves and we all know how well that will turn out.

I mean thank god Valve are working on replacing the production company before the main event big thanks for that really good thing from them some great managing but saying James is an ass after saving the face of the whole tournament the first day almost by himself (sure he was firing shots left and right but thats him and it helped to ease the tension) and just firing him after that is a big injustice in my eyes still. Atleast say something like we appreciate the work he made on the tournament but our expectations werent met or something.

I prefer honesty. Yeah calling him an ass doesn't explain much, but it's better than a copy and paste "we appreciate blah blah blah" meaningless statement.

I wish Yames was still employed though. He was an ass, but he was the best thing about this shoddy major so far.

Seriously, if you're going to fire James for being an ass, then you have no excuse keeping a bunch of violent provocative goons around as CSGO casters.

Edit: To all of the very upset CSGO players messaging me: you've heard Thorin and RLewis' side of the story on your subreddit, we have heard Loda and Kelly's side of the story on our subreddit. Naturally we don't agree, but none of us redditors know exactly what happened in that incident, so let's agree to disagree.

perhaps they are good to work with and james isn't? Not everything is able to be seen by the community.

People on reddit don't understand that we barely know the persons we see regularly on streams.
It's always black and white here and as soon as you are a fan/hater of someone this will mean the person is entirely good/bad.

I quite enjoy james on the desk, he brings life to it. But if he is an ass to work with he shouldn't be there and it isn't up to our opinions to force the host to work with people that aren't beneficial to them.

I agree. Obviously we don't know what really happened though, sometimes these things aren't entirely fair either.
We probably will never know for sure^^

I agree 100%.

With many people in media they play a character when performing especially in the world of twitch and youtube where just getting noticed takes enormous effort. If being loud and distinctive is what gets you noticed that is the character you will play.

This will be true to varying degrees, but plenty of people who play "tough/loud/rude" are not actually like that when they are not performing especially when working with co-workers.

Anyways YMMV this will be very true of some and not true of others, but the point I'm trying to make is that even people with similar "personalities" may actually treat those they work with as coworkers very differently than they act when performing. Conflict between them may even be scripted to some degree. That said I'm sure there are those that are worse IRL than they are on camera as well. I don't know the scene enough to comment on what is going on here, but unless a person has actually worked with the person and interacted with them when they aren't expected to be in character I don't think they should be commenting.

[–]Almighty then.theloosecanon [

I love 2GD, but you're absolutely right. I understand how difficult it can be to work with someone you think is hilarious, but over steps their boundaries way too liberally.

Supposedly he was told, in ear, go to a break but didn't listen. From a production standpoint that is indeed infuriating. You have expectations that they're going to do it, any second, and they don't do it for an extended period of time.

I can respect Valve's decision to let him walk mid event. Mid broadcast, even. Especially if they've had problems with him in the past.

This only further cements their decision to let him walk. You can't reliable work with someone in this line of work when they're unpredictable and known for sometimes witty remarks, and sometimes going a bit too far with what they say.

[–]GET OFF MY LAWN!Tehmaxx [

He's openly mocked the death of someone's mother during interviews.

She wasn't dead but it's still a subject line he wouldn't be afraid to broach. It was clear he was an ass, but he was an ass the community loved at least from a fan perspective. If the players and production staff hate him then I really can't blame them.

this exactly. People in this sub are thinking that he got fired for "beeing an ass in camera". No. He was probably an ass to WORK WITH (irresponsible, bad-mannered, etc. i dont know im just giving examples)

RL and Thorin are hired by the companies that valve has run/produce the majors. They are not hired by Valve - that is clearly not how things work in the Dota world, where Valve seems to take a more hands-on approach.

I'm still with 2GD on this one, but sadly the majority will side with Gabe.

Well, in the real world, being an ass is definitely ground to be fired. Gabe is a professional and a fucking multi-billion dollar networthed CEO, I'm sure if he says you're an ass you better clean up your act.

James was throwing production under the bus and described Waga as "SingSing's bottom bitch" among other things. If Valve wanted the coverage to be professional, this is all out of line.

But if Valve wanted the coverage to be professional there was zero reason to pick James as a host or to hire the current production team so I'm not really sure what they were expecting, especially since it doesn't seem like James was given instructions to change his behavior.

If James is an ass, how are Duncan 'thoorin' Sheilds and Richard Lewis able to work at your CSGO events?

Cause valve gives much less shits about CS, they're way less involved with the CS majors than TI/dota majors, it's pretty much just handled by whoever is hosting(speculation by me) im guessing, e.g. ESL, MLG, etc. etc.

You realize that there is a difference between being a dick as an internet persona and being a dick live working with people?
I am not saying 2gd is the latter, but apparently valve thinks so.

Why are people giving gold to someone with more money than everyone else in this thread combined

[–]Dravved [

Is it true that James was told to be himself? Wouldn't you all know what you were getting into when you said that?

Edit: And what of Thorin and Richard Lewis? James is an ass, but the majority seem to love him, myself included. Even my CSGO friends that hate watching Dota think Thorin is a prick and RLewis literally assaulted somebody at an event. How can Valve still invite them to events, and yet James is let go for entertaining the viewers during an absurd amount of delays.

Editx2: I should clarify that James was let go for entertaining viewers according to what we know. If things were much more serious, then disregard that last sentence. My point on Thorin and RLewis still stands.

[–]Flower PowerSnifflesDota [

I kind of new trouble is coming when one of the first words on the Major stream from James was "Cunt". Sure I like the guy and most of us do, but banter and all jokes could be done without harsh words and topics about drugs, underage prostitutes etc.

Well if you're talking about the introduction on day 1, he meant to say "cans and can'ts of Dota" or something along those lines. It just sounded a lot like cunt though.

[–]will loseimogenbeeton [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Well knowing James I think he made it a bit deliberately ambiguous as to whether he said "cunt" or "can't". Doubt that was what got him fired though.

I'm sure if someone said that it was expecting a performance like during the past TIs. Instead James harassed players, ignored production and told everyone on camera, and acted in multiple occasions as he didn't give a shit about the games.

I don't know what happened "behind the scenes" but James needed a warning for sure. I'll assume the warning happened and James didn't change his behavior leading to him being fired. But this is just my assumption.

If you're going to fire assholes are you firing Richard Lewis and Thooorin too?

I understand that people want consistency, but I wish we would stop focusing primarily on those two. This same comment is in here several times. You can see if you look at my profile that I have a ton of bad shit to say about Lewis, but this is akin to holding every decision Valve makes hostage until they fire Lewis and Thoorin, which isn't productive in terms of what's going on right now. It's not that there's no place for it, but a section of the community is fixated on it to the point that it's detrimental.

We have to agree that this is one of the weirdest statements ever received from Valve, and the weirdest thing I've ever heard Gabe say. I love James, but he must have fucked up. I want to be able to address that, and the ensuing madness that followed, without having it all hinge on firing Lewis and Thoorin, even if I think that would have been the right decision as well.

[–]Virtus Plow fanGamerhcp [

I don't think Valve gets too much of a say for CS majors, ESL and Dreamhack banned both of them but MLG didn't

1) Could you be more vague? What were the issues with him before the Shanghai Major, and what was it this time? The community can only speculate that it was his "harassment" towards Eternal Envy.

2)Good. The production quality was below acceptable for a tournament of this caliber. While you're at it, stop working with Perfect World.

Some Valve people lobbied to bring him back for Shanghai, feeling that he deserved another chance.

Then maybe you should've told him how you wanted him to act and not tell him "Be yourself"?

It's baffling to me why Valve hired James in the first place. James is an ass. James' entire appeal and online persona and hosting style is endeared in the fact that he's an ass. People like him because he's an ass and delivers some biting insults.

Sounds like Valve wanted Chobra/Redeye and "professional" (i hate that word) hosting from the outset and just decided to hire James for one last public shaming that silenced any fans within Valve, before throwing him to the wolves.

Pretty sure no one but James has said that the prime directive was for him to "Be Himself", which means I'm confident there were some other stipulations that he either glossed over or is failing to mention. The point of the majors was to make things more structured and professional. If Valve thought James could make some changes in that direction and be acceptable, it makes sense to hire him.

He's the one who went even more edgy than usual.
