It's actually oddly fitting Valve's communication about a host being canned in the middle of event, instead of an official release, is a reddit post by their CEO

[–]PALABALALA IM THE HEAL MANkandel_n_handel [

Surreal enough that im suspecting someone hacked gaben's account.

Yames has to post his side now. We now have a drama void that must be filled. If he won't we'll fill it ourselves and we all know how well that will turn out.

I mean thank god Valve are working on replacing the production company before the main event big thanks for that really good thing from them some great managing but saying James is an ass after saving the face of the whole tournament the first day almost by himself (sure he was firing shots left and right but thats him and it helped to ease the tension) and just firing him after that is a big injustice in my eyes still. Atleast say something like we appreciate the work he made on the tournament but our expectations werent met or something.

Shamelessly hijacking this to ask for more details as to the reason why James is an "ass" and what are the specifics for his firing?

Was he warned about something, was there a memo to him if there are things off limits for his hosting? I'm sorry to question you Gabe, many people worship you and would take your word as that of god, but me personally would like to know just a little bit more.

Sorry if I sound like an infidel to many people though, not my intention, just want a bit more details to his abrupt firing!

[–]will loseimogenbeeton [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

It could well have been something he did or said off stage. We won't know til he posts his side.

To be fair, he was an ass. Everyone on the panel knew it. It was absolutely great to watch as a fan, and made for great entertainment, but James is the epitome of unprofessional.

I still think the mistake was Valve for in the first place seeking James out, telling him to "be himself," and from what it seems, not knowing going in that their professional boundary will be crossed. Imo they should have given a list out of "here's what we don't want to get called out," knowing fully its his personality to call out everyone, even those he likes.

Nevertheless, I'm still fucking amazed that the hosts of CSGO are kept over and over but James is fired on day 2

I quite enjoy james on the desk, he brings life to it. But if he is an ass to work with he shouldn't be there and it isn't up to our opinions to force the host to work with people that aren't beneficial to them.

RL and Thorin are hired by the companies that valve has run/produce the majors. They are not hired by Valve - that is clearly not how things work in the Dota world, where Valve seems to take a more hands-on approach.

If James is an ass, how are Duncan 'thoorin' Sheilds and Richard Lewis able to work at your CSGO events?

Cause valve gives much less shits about CS, they're way less involved with the CS majors than TI/dota majors, it's pretty much just handled by whoever is hosting(speculation by me) im guessing, e.g. ESL, MLG, etc. etc.

You realize that there is a difference between being a dick as an internet persona and being a dick live working with people?
I am not saying 2gd is the latter, but apparently valve thinks so.

[–]Dravved [

Is it true that James was told to be himself? Wouldn't you all know what you were getting into when you said that?

Edit: And what of Thorin and Richard Lewis? James is an ass, but the majority seem to love him, myself included. Even my CSGO friends that hate watching Dota think Thorin is a prick and RLewis literally assaulted somebody at an event. How can Valve still invite them to events, and yet James is let go for entertaining the viewers during an absurd amount of delays.

Editx2: I should clarify that James was let go for entertaining viewers according to what we know. If things were much more serious, then disregard that last sentence. My point on Thorin and RLewis still stands.

[–]Flower PowerSnifflesDota [

I kind of new trouble is coming when one of the first words on the Major stream from James was "Cunt". Sure I like the guy and most of us do, but banter and all jokes could be done without harsh words and topics about drugs, underage prostitutes etc.

Well if you're talking about the introduction on day 1, he meant to say "cans and can'ts of Dota" or something along those lines. It just sounded a lot like cunt though.

Even if that's true, one should understand why they were fired from previous valve events. And not continue to do that.

[–]Dravved [

Was he ever actually "fired" from Valve events before though? I guess this is the point at which our knowledge of what has happened internally before, comes to an end. I can't help but feel that we won't ever get the full story, and I guess rightfully so. Business is business, and while I owe James for making me interested in Dota, and it's a shame he won't be doing future events, shit happens.

I was under the impression that James did not want to host TI5 because he did not like how professional it was becoming. However, I could be wrong.

it has always sounded as if james didnt want to host the international again, that it was his decision. never heard of anything else. why is that?

Could of been him wanting to save face and make it sound like it was his choice.

Could have been and unofficial thing, Could have been a number of reasons.

I'm sure if someone said that it was expecting a performance like during the past TIs. Instead James harassed players, ignored production and told everyone on camera, and acted in multiple occasions as he didn't give a shit about the games.

I don't know what happened "behind the scenes" but James needed a warning for sure. I'll assume the warning happened and James didn't change his behavior leading to him being fired. But this is just my assumption.

[–]TRALF WAS RIGHTYouthsonic [

He was probably told that by the same people that championed him, and then the rest of the company saw how he did and backpedaled as fast as possible.

James was throwing production under the bus and described Waga as "SingSing's bottom bitch" among other things. If Valve wanted the coverage to be professional, this is all out of line.

But if Valve wanted the coverage to be professional there was zero reason to pick James as a host or to hire the current production team so I'm not really sure what they were expecting, especially since it doesn't seem like James was given instructions to change his behavior.

Been waiting for this the entire time. I know Valve makes mistakes, but this was a mistake so big...that here had to be something going on. There just wasn't any proper place to have that discussion on here because the idea that 2GD would be in the wrong was hard to talk about.

Thing is, everyone knows he's an ass. That's not really a new thing. I think people like him because/in spite of that. And it's really odd for Valve to use that as the reason for the firing, given that everyone knew he was an ass before this event.

This is the worst employee-abuse I have ever witnessed. First of all, Gabe, you are talking about an actual person. Writing "James is an ass" on a public website is truly the lowest you can go as an employer. Commenting on this was necessary, but using such terminology is below any serious employer. Second, not even giving James a heads-up before he was let go mid-broadcast is just plain wrong. I don't know if Valve ever wants to be considered a serious employer again, but if you do you seriously need to consider your employee-handling policy.

Sure James is an ass but he's a valued member of the Dota 2 community and hosted many great events. Before the majors, when Valve said they wanted to let the community grow itself, 2GD was a leader of that community and hosted many great tournaments and helped the Dota 2 scene with the GD studio.

Valve deciding that 2GD is an ass and shouldn't host is baffling, especially when you have Thorin, a guy who attacks people on twitter, and Richard Lewis who physically assaulted a TI champion.

Yeah seriously, I was hoping for a more well reasoned post from someone as smart as GabeN.

Also how does he consider James to be enough of an asshole to fire him for it, but keeps Thorin and Richard Lewis around, despite their history of actually earnest racism, sexism, and violence?

They don't have to give a detailed list of why they fired someone every time they fire someone, if he's going so far as to say that he was an ass that is clearly indicative of how strongly people at Valve feel about him. I'm sure there is a lot we don't know about besides James being rude on camera.

If you are firing a host midway through the event then yes you do need to give a better explanation better than, "he's an ass".

It just needs to be something like, "there was a backstage dispute", "he was hard to work with", "we deemed his on camera performance inappropriate' just so we know why someone we were enjoying just gets shafted out of nowhere.

[–]Overestimation of skill is the true cancer of DotA 2Dam_Kids [

Imagine someone you know gets fired ( a stretch since none of us even know James but w/e). This is like going to the place they worked and demanding to know why they fired your friend. Things don't work like that in the real world. Valve doesn't owe any of us an explanation. Saying nothing would have made more sense but the entitled dota community would surely go full retard mode and start doing stupid shit like spamming nonrelated facebook pages or other equally stupid things that they've already been doing.

Two things:

(1) People deserve to know the real reasons James was fired. Not just hear you sling some personal attacks (I can see where the community gets its toxicity from now) on someone. If anything, James was the only thing keeping the shit show that has been the last two days of this event afloat.

(2) You should apologize for your mistakes. If hiring James was a mistake. Apologize. Also, how about apologizing for THE WORST PRODUCED EVENT we have seen in years? You may be trying to fix things but damned if you aren't trying to do it in a way that looks terribly unprofessional and uncaring towards the community and your own employees.

Edit: Yikes, already getting replies from people telling me I must be entitled because somehow calling your own employee an ass is a totally legitimate way of communicating with your customers from a billion dollar company. I expect comments like "He's an ass." from 5-year old kids not a fucking CEO. I am not fiending for some sort of TMZ drama or Barbara Walters behind the scene tell-all over here. Just pointing out how this is equally unprofessional if not entirely unnecessary. If you want to stay silent on your reasons, then shut the fuck up and don't post shit. Don't do it like this.

[–]something dankLatyos [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

1) Your company, your marketing = your decision but calling another person "an ass" on an official statement. I don't know but i feel like it's is not appropriate for a company owner. Especially if it's a company as big as Valve.

Also i don't know how can you call James as an ass while working with Richard Lewis.

2) Thanks for giving an ear to community and trying to solve problems.

1) Could you be more vague? What were the issues with him before the Shanghai Major, and what was it this time? The community can only speculate that it was his "harassment" towards Eternal Envy.

2)Good. The production quality was below acceptable for a tournament of this caliber. While you're at it, stop working with Perfect World.

Yeah you'll laugh and think I'm just a drop in the ocean, and you'll be right, but I can see you and your company are going in a direction that I no longer wantt to support and be a part of, and I'm sure when it comes down to it, I'm not alone.

I can see WHY Volvo would want to get rid of James for someone else (this major had a more casual air to it than previous majors, and valve seems to be aiming at a professional seeming event), but I don't understand why he would be hired if that was the goal in the first place.

I think it's sad for Yames, imo he did well, but I can also see that many people may not like him (though /r/dota2 suggest otherwise, dunno). Especially when there are differences before regarding his style.

But the good news of that post outweigh the bad news by quite abit :D
Good luck in finding a better company so fast!

And THANK YOU!!
