There may be more to it than that. He might be under pressure from his family, for instance. If deserting meant that his grandparents/cousins/parents/other important figures in his life lost respect for him, it may play a large role in his decision. This is obviously speculative, but who knows.

Also, people in Europe generally have a deeper sense of nationalism than we generally see in the states. I can appreciate his loyalty to his country, even if I can't understand it myself.

Forg1vens only living relative is his father. Also;on what do you base the perception that EU have a deeper sense of nationalism then the US. I would think that actually quite the contrary is the case but unlike you I'd rather refrain from baseless assumptions. I'd say youre talking right out of your ass there.

Roughly speaking there are those who argue that american patriotism is built on the constitution while in europe its more built on ethnicity and culture. I think that is what he mean

I understand what you mean. However, while the consitution serves as a guideline, every individual is different and if you think how many diverse people we have nowadays, the direct influence on the person's opinions is probably minimal. I think generalizing like that doesnt do any good, even if there were no ill intentions in such an asumption. I do know quite a few people spread across Europe and while there is obviously a certain amount of "loyalty" to whatever country you're born in, cases like Forg1vens are rare. Since it's the country you've been born in and/or raised up, you're just more likely to have some sort of affection or connection to it but real patriotism is something I've barely (if ever) seen. You also have to differentiate from country to country for Europe.
