I miss Ron Paul. This shit would have been off the mother fucking hook if he would have just manned up and ran again.

My prediction:

Trump has plurality of the delegates but not enough to seal the deal at the convention. Tensions are high as political posturing begins to shake things loose. Just as it looks like a semblance of sanity is about to emerge, Karl Rove takes the stage. Snoop's "Lodi Dodi" starts playing over the loud speakers as Rove announces that the establishment has decided to nominate a Jeb!/Romney ticket.

The NY Times publishes a piece two days later uncovering massive investments in talk radio/right wing news sites by a cabal of GOP establishment types.

Cruz was asked a question and he and Trump literally spent the entire answer yelling at and over each other.

More generally, everyone is acting totally bonkers other than Rubio on Apple.

I think people are being unfair a bit. It's basically Trump instigating all of this. If the stage were the other four, sure they would disagree but they wouldn't talk over each other more than Hillary and Bernie do and they wouldn't call each other liar, a joke, basically names.

I'm actually mad a Kasich doing his "I'm an adult" shtick while as an adult he wouldn't even dare to call out Trump's ridiculous tax plan. Come on, John.

That attack on Trump by Ted was crazy. Who is Cruz hoping to win over by hounding Trump for saying "I won't let people die in the street"??

It's called being principled. That's his appeal.

[–]IntegraldsI am the rep agent AMA 0

He's going to make a "gotcha" attack ad, because he recalls Trump supporting some kind of public health care system in a previous debate.

I can remember Trump saying something like that too, it just seemed super weird to me that Cruz made that particular gotcha question. "I won't let people die in the street" doesn't really scream "I want public healthcare" and I just don't see any candidate saying they do think it's ok to have people dying in the streets when asked.

I actually knew someone who supported ron paul and said this is part of the reason. That he's the only candidate willing to let people die to fix healthcare. That everyone else is just pushing the bill around.

So apparently at least some people have that stance.

Sure your friend would think that, if he was the person who lost his insurance and contracted a disease.

But yeah, I don't support that at all. Frankly I can't imagine anyone doing it.

Trump is genius. So, by bluster and demeanor alone, he could win the GOP nomination -- all without being pinned to a conservative platform! I mean, he's literally defending Planned Parenthood and tepidly supporting Obamacare, the individual mandate, and universal health coverage. He's running as a general election moderate in the GOP primary and pulling it off. He's selling Obama policies to a fervent GOP crowd.

So, this is the question I guess. Is it better to win your primary through crazy policy and smart demeanor, but then have to walk back the policies? Or is it better to win your primary with smart policy and crazy demeanor, but then have to walk back the demeanor?

I don't know. I guess we'll find out.

Edit: And now he is tepidly supporting Palestine.

Edit edit: Come to think of it, in the midst of his Jeb bashing, he said W should've been impeached, fully divorcing himself from the legacy of the Iraq War.

Please point out which of his policies are smart.

I mean, that's a stylized characterization of the situation. More accurate if you replace "crazy" with "very conservative" and "smart" with "relatively more moderate".

Um, outside of the debates, his platform is not what I would characterize moderate.

Relative to the GOP, yeah. Look, mostly, he hasn't been pinned down to a platform. He just blusters and runs with it. Ban the immigrants and build a wall? Great, he's in the GOP. Now, weigh that against his apparent pivot toward Palestine, support for Obamacare, the works. Look at the vector, not the current position.

He's managed to convince the GOP he's a hardliner mainly via rhetoric, albeit partly via policy. Now, he's bringing out non-hardliner policies. Next, he backs away from the rhetoric and other bits. It's genius tactics. I'm not like, telling you to vote for him. But, it does take some brilliant politicking to figure out this pretty unique path to victory. (Not to mention: he's step by step gutting the GOP platform.)

I just tuned in a moment ago to hear Rubio shouting over Trump that Palestine == Terrorist and Trump saying, "Look, you got to negotiate a deal, it's hard, but you gotta negotiate." And I'm like, shit, this is Trump?

This is just crazy, huh? This is just nuts. Jeez oh man.

Weirdly with Planned Parenthood, Trump defended the thing for 30 seconds, and then at the end said he won't fund PP regardless of all that because he's pro-life. I didn't get why defend it if you want it gone anyway.

Because he's pulling the GOP to the left. And that's how you start.

[–]say_wot_againSend complaints to hrod17@clintonemail.com

He's...he's really not though. I'd rather they focus on the pointless red meat of Planned Parenthood than on banning immigrants based on their religion.

Okay, but he's also basically defending Obamacare and Palestine. And claims W should've been impeached for the Iraq War. I mean, I'm not saying the random bigotry he's been throwing around is like, left wing or something. But I think it's hard to deny that his policy platform is leftier than the rest of the GOP.

Is anyone familiar with "shipping the good apples out"? Just curious if it's a common thing talked about.

[–]lord_of_the_rallyPraxxing my way through college

I'm not watching the debate but I can give a Brazilian perspective. As a poor nation, we've always exported our best products and kept the crappy ones. Coffee, cars, you name it. Top-grade coffee is still called "export type", BTW. So if it's about that what you're talking about, it's a really common thing down there in Brazil.

Wasn't in the debate. Just something I was wanting to discuss.

If you have high quality goods and low quality goods, when adding shipping costs, the high quality goods become relatively cheaper which means the substitution effect pushes consumption towards higher quality.

I think the issue with coffee is that there are two kinds: commodity coffee and single origin (boutique) which are somewhat separate markets. Commodity coffee is priced uniformly whereas single origin varies by quality. The boutique market is relatively new, so perhaps it's just that quality as a part of international demand is less important.

[–]lord_of_the_rallyPraxxing my way through college

The thing about exporting high-quality coffee is actually from the 19th century. I found a blog post by a very good Brazilian economist on exporting high quality goods. You may want to put it on Google Translator and give it a look. The model he proposes is exactly the one you mentioned.
