I feel like a LOT of people are not reading the article. Barrett Firearms is based in Murfreesboro, TN. They manufacture all of the Barrett .50 caliber rifles there. This isn't some random "overcompensation" or "taxpayer-sponsored advertising" - they're giving some recognition and respect to a firearms manufacturer that is based in their state that makes a number of unique weapons systems widely used by our armed forces to defend the country. Pretty much all US states have a bunch of largely meaningless "State whatevers", including guns. For example the state gun of Utah is the 1911 pistol, which was designed by John Moses Browning, a Mormon native of the state, which was the sidearm issued to almost all US troops in WW2, among other conflicts.

Also, Pennsylvania has a state gun, so this is not some "southern hillbilly" thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_firearms

There's no real reason why this is a bad or ridiculous thing. It's a historical company that contributes to the state economy and makes weapons for our military. Also, like it or not, gun culture is a part of our history.
