A huge container ship provides the perfect viewing platform to watch flashes of lightning turn night into day. The ship, which is 300m long and 42m wide, was a few hundred miles west of Sumatra, Indonesia, on its way to Singapore from Sri Lanka, when the electrical storm began at around 3am.

A baby orangutan grips to its mother after vets from the International Animal Rescue charity darted the older creature in West Borneo in order to take her to safety. Despite being close to starvation, the female orangutan was so fierce in her determination not to let rescuers near her baby it took three tranquilliser darts before she fell and landed safely in nets. IAR have now taken in mum and baby dubbed Mama Nam and baby Nam since the pair were rescued from the burnt forests in late January. Since being cared for Mama Nam is now producing milk.

A squirrel looks just like the Karate Kid as he squares up to another rodent during a fight. The pair of squirrels were fighting over some seeds that had been thrown onto the snow in Algonquin Provincial Park, in Ontario, Canada.
