Japan Mulling Donations for Wooden Seats at Olympic Stadium
Tokyo, Feb. 6 (Jiji Press)--The Japan Sport Council is considering seeking donations from the public to finance costs for installing wooden seats at a planned main stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, informed sources said Saturday.
The current plan calls for installing plastic seats at the new National Stadium at a cost of some 2 billion yen.
If all seats are made of wood to realize the concept of a wooden and greenery stadium, the costs are expected to increase to 5 billion to 6 billion yen. JSC hopes to cover the gap through donations, according to the sources.
In Japan, wooden seats are used at several stadiums such as Mazda Zoom-Zoom Stadium Hiroshima, the home of the Hiroshima Toyo Carp professional baseball club.
JSC is considering allowing donators who offer more than a certain amount of money to inscribe their names on the back side of seats.
