You couldn't pay me enough to visit an Islamic country.

More kebabs for me.

Visited Istanbul last year. The kebabs made by Turkish people in America are way better for some reason. Food was very mediocre all things considered.

Exotic foods made in US have been altered to cater to the tastes of the Americans compared to their authentic counterparts.

Just as western food in non-western places is frequently altered as well. I used to work in an Indian restaurant and we used to "white up" dishes by adding more cream and sweetener. I thought I had a refined palette, but honestly, I enjoyed the "whited up" dishes better.

A lot of Chinese food places in my area have 2 menus, one authentic one and one for white people. I wouldn't mind if they were just translated, maybe even tweaked, but they're 2 totally different menus.

It really pisses me off. I have a fair amount of time online at work, can't tell you how many times I've Googled an authentic dish, scour Yelp reviews to find the best place in town that makes it, only to be served something that's very different that the pics I saw online.

embrace the buddy system

Chinese cuisine is different in every country I have visited because they adapt to both local tastes and the availability or lack thereof of needed ingredients. Even if the dish is called X in both countries it will rarely ever be the same. Even that American Chinese staple Chow Mein differs between regions in the US.

I'm from a South-Asian family. I eat spicy super currytastic food almost everyday. I don't think it's that. Turkish food I had in Turkey truly just lacked flavor.

I had the same experience. I'm convinced that Brooklyn has the best Turkish food. Definitely better than Istanbul.

[–]Yodan 3

great middle eastern food here in nyc but to be real, Israel hands down had the best falafel I've ever tasted. Had it all over the place there and it was incredible, nothing comes close in the us. something about the spice in their hot sauce and the quality of hummus you could tell they've worked on for a thousand years.

That's because of the freedom. The Turkish people in the US are happier.

They could be miserable but they probably have access to better ingredients and wares.

You probably didnt leave istanbul. Im currently travelling turkey from iran (which has the best non - asian cuisine I've had), and the southern border of turkey is a culinary adventure in itself.

But yeah kebabs at home shit on istanbul

Planning to visit Iran next year, last year I went to Palestine and had some great food... But from what I've read and seen, Iranian cuisine looks... divine.

Haha yes! Im half thai so nothing beats it but i exclude it because of bias. But northern thai is so much like laos food it's awesome

Oh when I was in Cologne and Dortmund last year I had the best Kebabs.

e: wait, 2 years ago, I forget its 2016.

I thought the same thing about the Italian food in Italy.

I think Turkey is considered the only secular Muslim country, that is, not a theocracy. Now that I think about it, it's quite telling that it's the only one. Besides the Vatican, which hardly counts, I can't think of any modern Christian theocracies.

Indonesia is majority Muslim and not a theocracy.

Kurdish Regional Goverment is pretty secular and democratic.

It is corrupt, but that's expected in the region.

The Kurds, unlike the Turks, Arabs, or Persians, practice FGM at alarming rates.

And honor killings.

I didn't say they had no problems, but the place is SECULAR, as in you can believe in what you want, honor killings and FGM are major problems here.

I see so many christians, atheists, and other religions with places of worship, missionaries, etc.

When will this Kurds meme end

I will take a kebab made here in Charlotte by Turkish immigrants and keep my head on my shoulders. Good deal.

Because you're afraid of... being killed? Or because you're afraid to be insulted by another culture?

I'm honestly curious to hear a well reasoned answer to why you'd not want to visit any of the 50 (or so) Muslim countries? Basically saying that these sometimes VASTLY different countries and cultures are all the same, because of one aspect of their culture, namely their religion?

What about OMAN, the greatest muslim majority country on Earth?

No. Nor: Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, UAE, Iraq, Syria, Qatar, or any of the others.

I'd like to visit Iran, but in many years from now when tensions have cooled more. Israel gets a maybe, if, and only if, their situation calms way the fuck down. Not sure how many people remember, but there a time in the early 2000s when busses were blowing up there almost daily.

Which "Islamic" country are you referring to? Surely you mean, "Muslim-majority", yes?

Don't worry, Islam is coming to a country near you!

Indonesia is so tame lol.

This guy pissed some people off because of the research he was doing. He was clearly in a vulnerable situation. They're not gonna go around torturing tourists visiting the pyramids.

There have been terrorist incidents there too...

It's one of the biggest countries in the world and you get terrorist attacks in France and Spain

I felt safer in Indonesia than I did in the Philippines, by far, and the dodgiest places I went to outside Jakarta were in Bali, which is Hindu. I.e. Islam has nothing to do with it
