Ask a senior engineer to walk you through some of the common flows, and talk about the roles of the major packages. Ask questions, take notes.

Actually I learned the reference from watching Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

As an employee you're just going to be working on a specific portion of one product. At any one time, anyway. Internal transfers are encouraged as a general rule (not that your managers are going to be telling you to leave of course, but the culture is supportive of it) and seem to be very common. I'm seriously considering transferring overseas at some point, and everyone I work with is aware of that.

That bay rent is what scares me, I pay ~600/mo including utilities for my current apartment. Average 1b/1b in my area would be ~800/mo.

Yeah the rents here will make your eyes bleed, but then again the salaries are high enough to compensate. I currently pay like 1900/month for a 1br manufactured home, going up to 2100/month soon (but at least it was brand new when we moved in), but that's not too big of a deal when you're making well into the six figures.

Unless you want to buy a house, of course. Then you're boned. In our case we're just saving aggressively to eventually buy a house somewhere else.

Depends really. As a whole, the bay area's transportation system can be optimistically described as "hideously dysfunctional". I live about 8 miles from work so biking takes me about 40 minutes at a moderate pace, 35 minutes if I push myself a bit. During rush hour traffic that's probably faster than driving, just getting off the Shoreline exit on 101 takes like 10-15 minutes, sometimes more.

Sometimes commuting is ok, if you can rely on what little decent public transport exists (BART, CalTrain), or you have a decent bike route, or you have a company shuttle on a route that's not too congested, or you just live close to work ($$$). But for the most part it kind of sucks, it's something you tolerate because the bay area is so flush with good job opportunities.

Except for the weather. The weather is FANTASTIC for biking. Probably the only place in the US that could compete with coastal California for good bike weather would be...Hawaii maybe?

I live in FL right now and it would not work out so well for me if I decided to not drive to work.

Yeah doesn't Florida have like the highest rate of pedestrians deaths in the country or something? It sounds like an unending sprawly hellscape down there.

No idea. Personally I think it's a cool thing, but I don't do the resume filtering and by the time people get to us for technical interviews we usually care more about interview performance than credentials.

Depends. How do you feel about letting Jeff Dean feed upon your soul every morning? He's been getting hungrier lately, and the shareholders are ever more demanding.

I used to live in Seattle! And there's a good chance I'll return, I'm sure as heck not staying in the bay area long-term.

cscareerquestions 内の rerevelcgnihtemos によるリンク What do people do with their dogs at Google?

[–]LLJKCicero 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I can't remember if I've seen them at Google but at Amazon some people would use little fences (like what people use for babies/toddlers) to keep their dog in one area. This may or may not be practical depending on your coworkers' attitudes and your office setup.

Clearly it's because Android is superior to iOS.

...also possibly because this sub allows custom flairs and I've had this flair for a while now.
