Introduction
Dr Maki Kimura joined the Department in December 2009 as a Teaching Fellow in Gender and Politics. She holds a Ph.D. in Gender Studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and an MA in Political Science from Waseda University, Japan. Prior to joining UCL, she was a research fellow at the Open University.
Throughout her research career, Maki’s research focus has been on social justice, gender and racial equality. She has recently published a book entitled Unfolding the ‘Comfort Women’ Debates: Modernity, Violence, Women’s Voices, based on her Ph.D. research, which examines the system of military sexual slavery in Asia-Pacific during the Second World War. In addition to highlighting the significance of gendered analysis of war and conflicts, it engages with critical questions that testimonies of victim-survivors of sexual violence have raised in the transnational redress movement and the international criminal justice system.
Currently, she is interested in exploring how feminists interact with the state and other institutions, and the impact of multi-level governance and gender equal political representation in developing and promoting gender sensitive public policies. She is also working on a textbook on gender and politics, which will be published by Manchester University Press.
