It's a bit like having 50 small to moderately sized countries packed under one roof. Each with its own various subcultures and norms.

Thus far I get downvoted every time I make the comparison, but I really believe it. The USA and Europe are basically the same if you disregard languages from the equation. Different states have different cultures, cuisine, and appreciations.

I get what you're saying, but "basically the same" is overdoing it. Europeans definitely tend to underestimate the variance from state to state in the USA, but Americans often overestimate it too and you're doing that here. Driving from one side of the USA to the other is a much more culturally homogeneous experience than doing the same across Europe (I've done both). Yes, each state has its own things and I loved discovering them, but they also share an enormous amount. European countries don't have the same level of commonality, and never will without much, much more integration at every level of society (and a bit of amnesia to forget each country's intertwined but very individual history). You can't really disregard language either because it's one of the biggest things maintaining and reinforcing those differences.

I think you underestimat the differwnces between places like Lewiston, ME and Santa Fe, AZ. I have been to several countries in Europe (Iceland, UK, Holland, Germany, Spain, and more) and the are more alike than any of them would admit. The differences are there, but so are the likenesses.

I kinda want to downvote you just for the joke... but you have a good point.

You win this time

if you disregard the different ethnicities, language, culture, history and political systems of European countries, sure its exactly like the states.
