I figure there may be vaults out there that had accented speakers whose children would pick it up, and their children would in turn do the same. Even outside of the vaults, survivors could carry it on. Boston does have a notable Irish population, and it would be more of a surprise if that didn't last in some way.

I don't know... It seems like children typically don't have as strong of an accent as their parents. After a few generations I think it would all end up blending into whatever the common accent of the area is.

Speaking of area-specific accents, I wonder what the typical Boston accent will sound like 200 years from now. I'm sure the Boston accent from 200 years ago sounds nothing like the Boston accent today so I suppose it would be possible for it to continue to evolve and change in the future. Of course that's all completely off topic, but still interesting to think about.

You're certainly on the right track, I think-- I was just throwing a vague idea out there. If there was a large enough population of accented speakers living together, I suppose it could last longer, but they wouldn't necessarily be together for generations.

And off-topic, sure, but an interesting question! I hadn't thought about that before, but I'm intrigued now. Since we have the technology to record now, I guess future generations will be able to draw a comparison compared to our present, since we have-- as far as I know-- no recordings of a Boston accent from 200 years ago.

If children are raised in a mixed population, some with accents but most without, then they won't have an accent or much of one. But if there was, say, an Irish neighborhood that hid in a subway and stayed secluded, children raised there would absolutely have the Irish accent just as much as their parents because that's what they are 100% surrounded with.
