【Brad】Alyssa, if there was only one food you could eat for the rest of your life, what would it be?

【Alyssa】Okay, so my answer is dependent upon cooking. Um, I could not live without rice, and I think it’s very versatile, which is why I would like to, you know, have that as my one food for the rest of my life. You can have Mexican, you can have Japanese rice, you can have mixed rice, Jasmine rice, all that. But I feel like this question is more dependent on just one single meal food.

【Brad】Yeah.

【Alyssa】In which case…

【Brad】Cuz (Because) otherwise you’d be eating plain rice. Maybe you could have some, like condiments, but…

【Alyssa】Unacceptable.

【Brad】Yeah.

【Alyssa】Maybe. So I guess I would just have vodka sauce pasta made by my mom’s ex-boyfriend because he made the bomb sauce. He would like, set it on fire, and that’s how you knew it was, like extra spicy and delicious.

【Brad】Mmm.

【Alyssa】And he would, like let it ferment in this, like glass bottle on his, like, um, kitchen counter for a week, with all those juices and the vodka just, like coming together, and it was just so amazing, I would not eat for days before (laughs).

【Brad】(Laughs) That changes my answer, because mine originally was gonna (going to) be Quaker oatmeal squares, and that’s actually the life I live now…

【Alyssa】(Laughs)

【Brad】Where I have boxes of Quaker oatmeal squares everywhere…

【Alyssa】Huh.

【Brad】And I get really excited when it’s on sale at the store because it’s sweet and it’s like, mildly healthy because of the fiber…

【Alyssa】Uh huh.

【Brad】And I think there’s some protein in there too, so you get filled up, but if there’s any dish it’d probably be the Peruvian dish lomo saltado because it has French fries and meat together.

【Alyssa】Oh.

【Brad】And I think any time you combine French fries and meat together, you can’t go wrong.

【Alyssa】So what is that dish? I’ve never heard of it.

【Brad】Uh, I haven’t had it for a while. It’s usually rice, and French fries, and some vegetables that are sautéed.

【Alyssa】Mm hm.

【Brad】And they kinda (kind of) use this soy sauce base, like to marinate it in.

【Alyssa】Mm hm.

【Brad】And, or stir-fry, and then some kind of meat, so you can have, uh…lomo saltado’s usually beef, and then they have chicken ones, and also most places you could get a fried egg on top of it.

【Alyssa】Ah!

【Brad】Which makes it even better. So it’d be a fried egg lomo saltado.

1) Condiments（調味料）

2) Bomb（素晴らしい・美味しい）

◎ “Bomb”は本来、「爆弾」や「爆撃」などの意味としてよく使われますが、日常会話では、「最高」や「素晴らしい」などの褒め言葉としても使われる場合もあります。15年ほど前に流行ったスラングで、今では主に２０代、３０代の人たちの間で使われています。かなり砕けた言い方なので、フォーマルな場で使うのは避けたほうがいいでしょう。
◎ カリフォルニアでは、特に食べ物に対してよく使われます。

3) Set on fire（火を付ける）

◎ “Set on fire”は、「〜に火を放つ」や「〜を発火させる」などを意味しますが、タバコやロウソクなどに火を付けるような状況ではなく、勢いよく炎を燃え上がらせる状況で用いられる言い方です。因みにタバコやロウソクの場合は“Light up”と表現するのが一般的です。
◎ “Set on fire”はその他、人を激しく興奮させる意味としても使われます。特にコンサートなどを見に来た観客を熱狂的にする意味として使われることが多いです。

4) Fill up（いっぱいにする）

◎ “Fill up”は、何かを一杯にすることを意味します。グラスに水をたっぷり注いだり、イベントが満席になったり、袋の中に物をぎっしり詰めたりなど、様々な状況で使える便利な表現です。ガソリンスタンドで店員に「ガソリン満タン」と言う場合は“Fill up on”の後に希望のポンプ番号を伝えます。
◎ 今日の会話ではブラッドさんが「You get filled up」と言いましたが、ここではお腹が一杯になることを表しています。しかし、「満腹」を「I’m filled up」とはあまり言わないので注意しましょう。基本的にブラッドさんが言ったように「何かを食べることで満腹になる」といった表現をする際に用いられます。
