A tutorial ” how to connect your PC to internet using MeroMobile GPRS cellphone”

Requirements:

GPRS enabled Cellphone(/wBluetooth,most preferably)(MeroMobile SimCard) –>It’s gonna act as Wireless modem

Bluetooth Dongle/dataCable–>it puts a sync between PC and CellPhone all the time

Windows 98/2000/XP-it’s basic necessity

Procedures:(i’m strictly following Bluetooth only/No datacable data but it’s all same after all)

1.Enable Bluetooth on your cellphone and start your bluetooth manager software/drivers/wateva on your PC. Make sure USB dongle is attached on USB port before doing this.
(Once you start Bluetooth software on PC, it seeks bluetooth devices around and once it finds one, it shows there is sync between PC and CellPhone via bluetooth)


2.When you install drivers for your bluetooth dongle, it automatically sets the necesarry parameters for connection like:

BlueTooth DialUp connection
BlueTooTh GPRS connection
BlueTooth LAN connection
Wlink
Infocom..

we are interested on GPRS connection, so, select BluetooTh GPRS connection.

there is no username/password things like on it ie GPRS. we just have to use GPRS number starting somethhing like with : *99#( by default, it’s there)
change it to : *99***1# (this is your dialing GPRS code, it’s just like wlinks 15100)

click connect and we are connected to net inno times.

now, your CellPhone will act as wireless modem and speed is much better than of DialUps.

NOTES:
MeroMobile is very generous in giving these connections.
there are two schemes:
1. limited download: Here, it’s just like making calls. Per MB you downloaded, you gotta pay approx Rs 20(i calculated myself) i mean it gets reduced that way. so, if you have Rs 300 balance and using net on PC, you downloaded 6 MB, it’d be Rs 120 for just 6 mb and you’d ended up with Rs 180 balance only. This is total NO NO recommendation.

2. Unlimited Download: It’s like unlimited download. i already downloaded more than 600 Mbs warez downloads and no more penny deduced. Okay, this is for once and all. You’ve to make sure your balance never gets down below Rs 700(yea you’ve to pay This Rs 700 when you subscribe to this scheme) in addition to your other balance to make calls. once you do, everymonth, you’ll have to renew you account, if you talked more and balance falls below Rs 700. This is the most viable option for you all.
(this unlimited scheme is expiring soon, sorry fellas.. it’d be per KB download scheme now on)

***Ditch NTC and it’s LANline for DUP connection. Save money and start using this very interesting option. I bet you won’t regret. I see no future of NTC in coming days. ***

TIPS:(applicable to MeroMobile users only)

type this on your cellphone and call:

*901# – will show you remaining balance and free calls left info.
*902#<13 number from scratch card> – it’s usefull when your simcard is frozen due to various reasons. use it only when 90012 doesn’t help you to recharge your cards
*903# – will show you your own number on cell pone
*904# – will show you current dates in AD/BS

  2. bro, for that we’ve to go to Mero Mobile (Spice Nepal Office), write an application, and they’ll give us some sort of procedures, once followed, they’ll activate GPRS on our cell.
    Some cell phone needs IP address to be entered too but i found many cell phone needed only the access point , that is “mero” .
    Once done correctly, you can surf net , i urge you to use small free JAVA browser called OPERA MINI from getjar.com for your specific model.
    Lets hope they solve your problem ASAP.

    if you dial 900 and follow the ‘numbers to action’, you may feel your service being activated. but it’s not.

    at their computer, your number must be set to use GPRS bro.

  6. I was finally able to activate gprs. The browser of my phone only open merowap.com. Noomatter what I try to open the only page that opens in merowap. I dowloaded this opera mini browser and it’s working fine.

  7. i heard that NTC is introducing RIM card which can be intregated with some hardware and can be used for connecting to the internet through wireless devices . This RIM card is based on Code Divison Multiple Access (CDMA) rather than TDMA and FDMA in GMS phones which means better better network and cheaper call rates . But i dont know how the internet services on this RIM card will be . Can you provide me more information on this??????

  8. bro, before i discuss on your query.. i think i should tell you what i know about these technology..

    in mobile phone(wireless communication) technology, there are normally few standards or you can say names given to identify these technologies. Such as GSM,CDMA,TDMA, FDMA(as you say, i’ve not heard of it though). These standards took years of research and hence we ‘ve different generation likewise.
    I’m putting things in very concise manner, okie?
    *1st generation wireless phone included walkie-talkie cordless type, which is very big in size and it’s purpose was to make just receiving and making calls. In history channel, i saw once, those cordless phones were carried on the backhood of cars or large vehicles.
    *2nd generation wireless phone included developed form of previos gen’ phone. now limited digital data transmission was possible.
    *3rd generation wireless phone includes even more developed form than former ones. It’s feature rich phones which included GPRS/GSM/EDGE, colorful phones, with multimedia rich phone, supporting individual OSes. capable to work under many frequencies.
    *frth generation wireless phone.. umm i just heard about it and dunno much about it. GPS, satellitic,TV, live video feeds are some of it’s features i guess.

    It’s from 3rd Generation of cell phone, that we’re able to surf net using GPRS/EDGE/CDMA/TDMA technology.

    Now, SIM means Subscriber Identification Module with unique number issued to subscriber which can be installed on different cell phone.
    Regarding RIM , i coouldn’t get much info on it.

    But, as NTC launched PCMCIA(personal computer Memory card interface adapter) card for laptops few weeks ago,which is another form of wireless technology to enable laptops to surf internet, i think RIM is for Desktop computer which could also be wireless technology. Wireless internet works on one basic funda. That’s access point and through that access point, a gateway to Internet is assigned. We surf net using that access point and cell phones reaches that point through the frequency or network provided. So, be it RIM,GPRS,CDMA or any other wireless internet/communication, it’s the game of access point. By the way, what is GMS phones?

    to tell you the truth, i really don’t care what those NTC guys announce. ..
    to me it seems more rumour than truth.

    but we can expect surprises from Spice Nepal soon.

  9. No the RIM is somthing like a SIM card but is based on CDMA . NTC is selling the cards for about 600 NRS and the call rates are much more cheaper than the GSM Pre-Paid mobile but you need to buy a cdma handset which will increase the cost . i also heard that the card could be intreadet with some hardware and used for connecting wireless devices to the net . but i dont have much info on it . i think i should go to the telecom office and get some info .

  11. well its not RIM but its UIM pronunced as RIM and surfing net is preety much possible through it and the cost is in volume downloaded . they are charging 25 paisa for 100 kb download .

    1. Enter the main menu.

    2. Select WebAccess ‘Web Sessions ‘New Entry

    3. Enter Name: MERO

    4. Scroll to GPRS
    APN: mero

    5. On Homepage,type:
    http://merowap.com

    6. Leave everything default and press done.

    7. You are now ready to surf internet with Mero Mobile GPRS service.

    Roshan, i think you never visited, MeroMobile head office.

    here are the steps from their sites, if you are reluctant to visit them.

    GPRS:
    General Packet Radio Service offer ‘always-on’, higher capacity, Internet-based content and packet-based data services. GPRS enables services such as Internet browsing, e-mail on the move, powerful visual communications, multimedia messages and location-based services. GPRS offers complete solutions through which you can always stay online and getconnected with family, friends.

    How to Access GPRS?
    Following are the pre requisites to utilize GPRS on your handset
    1. GPRS compatible handset / mobile
    2. Service activated on your number
    3. Respective handset / mobile GPRS settings on your handset

    Procedure to Activate GPRS service
    If you want to activate GPRS service first of all you have to dial *900# and press Ok.
    You will see options in your screen containing
    1. Account,
    2. Service Operation,
    3. Office Information,
    4. How to call the call Center, and
    5. Change Password.

    Press to the ANSWER (Left down corner in your screen), then press 2 and SEND (Right down corner in your screen). Again you will receive new options, then press ANSWER then 2 and SEND. Again you will receive new options, and then press ANSWER then 4 or 5 depends on GPRS Tarification Scheme and SEND.
    Your service will be activated. Press to the ANSWER (Left down corner in your screen), then press 2 and SEND (Right down corner in your screen). Again you will receive new options, then press ANSWER then 2 and SEND. Again you will receive new options, and then press ANSWER then 4 or 5 depends on GPRS Scheme and SEND. Your service will be activated.

    1. Settings for Sony Ericsson k700, k750i
    1. Enter the main menu.
    2. Select Connect (Connectivity)? Data comm ? Data accounts
    3. Press YES at Add account?
    4. At Account type, select GPRS data.
    5. Enter New account: MERO
    6. Enter APN: mero
    8. Enter Password: Leave this field blank
    9. Press Save.
    10. Again go to the main menu.
    11. Select Connect (connectivity) ? Internet settings ? Internet Profiles
    12. Add New profile
    13. Enter Name: mero
    14. Select Connect using: MERO
    15. Changes made save? Yes
    16. Selct the new profile just created click more ?advanced?change homepage
    17. Use http://merowap.com as address
    18. Select save.
    19. Use internet services to browse Internet through Mero Mobile GPRS.

    Settings for Motorola V3, L6, L7 1. Enter the main menu.
    2. Select WebAccess ‘Web Sessions ‘New Entry
    3. Enter Name: MERO
    4. Scroll to GPRS APN: mero
    5. On Homepage: http://merowap.com
    6. Leave everything default and press done.
    7. You are now ready to surf internet with Mero Mobile GPRS service.

    Settings for Nokia 3100, 3120,
    1. At the main screen Select Menu ‘Services ‘ Settings
    2. Select Set 1 for Active Service Settings.
    3. Go to Edit Active Service Settings.
    4. Make Changes as follows
    a. Settings’ Name: Mero GPRS
    b. Homepage: http://merowap.com
    c. Session Mode: Permanent.
    d. Connection Security: Off
    e. Data Bearer: GPRS

    1. At the main screen, select MENU’ Services ‘ Settings button.
    2. Select Set 1 for Active Service Settings.
    3. Go to Edit Active Service Settings.
    4. Make Changes as follows
    a. Settings’ Name: MEROGPRS
    b. Homepage: http://merowap.com
    c. Session Mode: Permanent
    d. Connection Security: Off
    e. Data Bearer: GPRS

    b. Data bearer: GPRS
    c. Access point name: mero
    d. User name: none
    e. Prompt password: no
    f. Password: none
    g. Authentication: Secure
    h. Homepage: http://merowap.com
    3. Select Back to exit settings. Leave the rest of the field as it is, do not make any other changes
    4. Turn off and on your phone set, you are ready to surf internet with Mero Mobile GPRS service.

    Setting for Samsung SGH C210, S200
    1. Press Menu ‘ Funbox ‘ WAP Browser
    2. Go to Settings and select Profile1 Info
    3. Change the profile1 Info as follows
    a. Profile Name: MERO GPRS
    b. Homepage URL: http://merowap.com
    c. Security: Non-Secure
    d. IP Address: 192.168.29.9
    e. Bearer: GPRS
    f. User Name:
    g. Password:
    h. Enter APN: mero
    4. Press the back arrow key to exit Settings
    5. Select Home to start your Mero Mobile GPRS service.

    You got Nokia Phone(which is GPRS enabled that means, you can browse internet on your mobile phone)
    You got Laptop
    You must have a USB cable or bluetooth(bluetooth support for both end) for using internet at Laptop through GPRS enabled set.

    here are the steps:
    1. Install the Nokia PC Suite(synchronisation) Software on your laptop.

    2. Restart if needed else Connect your Phone and laptop through USB cable. I prefer USB cable instead of Bluetooth because, there is least chance of interruption while connecting net through it.

    3.Once connected, Right click the Nokia PC-suite icon at taskbar and click ‘Connect to the internet’ option ( in my Nokia n70, i’ve ‘connect to the internet’ option, i’m assuming, yours too have same option else check for anything else which is nearly to that)

    4. Most important point is you’ve to select your access point. In case of mero mobile GPRS, it’s just ‘ mero ‘ without quotes. Change the access point settings to ‘mero’ without quotes. and follow the upcoming procedures. and you’ll be connected.

    Now, start browsing net on your Laptop through your mobile phone’s GPRS.

  46. Raju, it normally happens if you are not within the reach of tower or where there is network congestion. ‘Request timed out ‘ is coming because it’s taking long time to get connected to the spice nepal’s wireless router.

    if you are getting gateway not responding, make sure APN is set to ‘mero’ without quotes.

    if it’s needed to put IP address somewhere, do that too. you can get all the info from their very website. i’m giving you the direct link for settings on your motorola model. check this link : http://www.spicenepal.com/index.php?pg=srv_network&srv=s_gprs

    besides, try restarting your phone, go to open area and check if it works or not.

    else pay a visit to their head office if nothing works.

    but my desire is to connect to pc running internet and connect my set with pc and use internet of PC (sharing internet to my phone) . IS it possible ?

  58. why would you want to use your Desktop Internet on Cell phone? people put effort to use GPRS on their Desktop PC.

    Anyway, pravat, the answer is YES and NO.

    GPRS is a technology initially built for mobile devices based upon radio frequency. But with the advance synchronisation facility with PC, one can share mobile device’s content to PC. With that said, wirelessly, our desktop can surf internet.

    But i see no clue why would you want to share your desktop internet to your mobile devices. May be some Remote Sharing Software would help but i don’t think it’s logical to use your desktop’s internet that way.

    the process is hectic, i tried once ..didn’t work. Try it for yourself. here is the guide.

    to connect to internet from your desktop using motorola phone , you need “motorola phone tools”. It’s a software which lets you connect to internet from your phone.

    most important thing is that some mobile with USB cable doesn’t need it’s proprietary software to share music files and photo files, Windows xp just put it as ‘USB mass storage’ device. But when we need to connect to internet or to import contacts etc, then we need proprietary software like ‘Motorola Phone tools’.

    1. install motorolas phone tool for your phone model from the given CD that comes with it when you bought it.

    12. connect your motorola phone on it(usb cable)

    3. there must be some option in motorola phone tool to connect to internet(Im just giving you some logic, because it works nd rest you’ve to figure it out yourself. Since i’m as poor guy and don’t have so many phones to test every settings on each of them)

    4. so, lemme know if that works or not or write me even more like what you did and i’ll certainly try to help you. i’ve friends with motorola set, i’ll test on their set likely

  63. there is nothing to do with USB cable to get yourself an internet on your cell phone. If you want to surf internet on desktop using GPRS on your cell phone, then please kindly check above comments, there is possible solution for your problem.

  79. Ganesh.. when you dial 9005, if they say you to go google or yahoo then it’s definitely a problem with your cell phone. Certain service wants you to download from wap sites or may be some Web browser seems problematic.

    Why don’t you install “opera mini”(a free web browser for cell phone) from your desktop PC and then try to download files off the net. Opera Mini is a great browser. You can download it from http://www.operamini.com/

    Remember your Symbian OS is S40 series, i think.

    To chat with MSN messenger, you can download ‘Agile Messenger’ for your model. download it off the net. http://www.dotsis.com is a great place to find such softwares. if you like it, then pay for it. http://www.dotsis.com has all pirated and cracked softwares for mobile phones. i don’t promote such illegal activities but for education purpose, you can try and if you like the program you must buy it.

Sonam, that’d be bothering.. why don’t you use operamini and access all your email from there. You can use, Mobile Msn or Gmail’s Cellphone version applet if your phone supports or yahoo off Opera mini.

  100. JOMON THOMAS, it depends upon the network speed of your service providers. The fact you are seeing as 460 kbps speed is the phone’s maximum ability to transfer the data rate. But the transfer rate you are getting is 5kbps which is your current service providers network speed for average user. If you ever happen to have connection problem, you’ve to set your bit rate speed below 460 kbps from the modem settings of your phone N70.

    there must be something wrong on their computer. You know, sometimes, you’ve to pay visit to them, if you are unable to get the GPRS service on your phone even after following normal procedures that I’ve mentioned here.

    Regarding your vodafone, you need to have it’s software installed on the computer to transfer softwares from computer to your cell phone. The only hardware requirement would be your computer and your cellphone. If you’ve bluetooth adapter on your computer, it’ll be lot easier to transfer files/softwares to and fro. BUT, if you are trying to connect to Internet, I strongly recommend you to use Data Cable.

    YEMI, all the concepts are generic that i’ve put on this article. I’ve been telling all commentators who don’t really go through my article and end up asking me questions from beginning. I urge them to read my articles first.

    -FIRST, get GPRS internet service. Take a note of all the details from your service provider like access points and server details necessary for your mobile. Once you get all those stuff, it’s necessary to input those details on your computer’s mobile sync softwares too. Once that’s done, it’s good to go and troubleshoot the connection issues whenever it happens.

    -SECOND, don’t get irritated, take your time, put your effort at first then search online and finally you’d be able to solve problems.
