People originally liked her because they thought she was an average and modern American mom turned politician. Many conservatives and moderates liked her folksy and common sense style when she first appeared as McCain's running mate in 2008 at the Republican Convention. However almost immediately after the convention she began to show signs of her political inexperience. She knew almost nothing about foreign affairs, economic policy, and had been involved in a few scandals up in Alaska. She also went "rogue" from McCains campaign to insinuate that Obama was a secret Muslim, and that that was bad, along with attacks on his patriotism. This is believed to be part of McCain's loss in 2008 and all this caused her popularity to rank among moderates and establishment republicans.

As the years went on she slowly lost a little popularity with conservatives as she quit being governor half way through her term, had a few speaking blunders, and represented herself oddly. But she retained a bit of popularity among Tea Party supporters as an Obama critic and an example of "true America" in their eyes. But then, during her "Convince me to Run for President" campaign of 2012 she got Paul Revere's story horribly wrong when she said he rode through the country, shooting his gun and warning the British that they weren't going to take our guns. After getting that piece of history so horribly wrong, her popularity waned considerably among the few hold outs.

She tried to say that she would be good at foreign policy because Alaska border on to two foreign countries Canada and Russia but hadn't actually been involved in negotiations with either country. Finally her claim that she would be good came down to Obama has to fly over Alaska when he travels to Russia.

Tina Fey the SNL comedian did a series of really good skits on her in the run up to the 2008 election and it became impossible to know where Tina Fey ended and where Sarah Palin started.

One of her daughter had to resign about a year ago from a group that advocates abstinence before marriage, where she was earning $100,000+. As she was pregnant with her second child out of wedlock.

Fun fact. SNL were told not to make fun of her, so Tina Fey used her exact words in a sketch.

They make a reference to this in one of the episodes of 30 Rock.

That doesn't seem right. Palin never literally said the words, "I can see Russia from my house!"

How could you be governor of Alaska and not negotiate with Canada?

[–]BarfBagButts[S] 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

Thank you so much for this.

Of course, man. If you would like further information on Mrs. Palin's roll in the 2008 election and how it impacted her then I recommend watching Game Change. While Mrs. Palin argued that the movie was inaccurate many of her aides and campaign staff claimed that it was an accurate portrayal of the campaign and her roll in it.

She also raised a lot of money by leading her supporters to believe she would run for president in 2012, then just kept the money.

That seems like a common problem with candidates that base their politics around attacking another person. They start out really popular but people quickly become disillusioned about the candidates. Too confrontational makes people worried and distracts from the issues they actually care about. It creates a fairly grim image of politics when colleagues can't even get along or work together professionally.

Totally false that moderates liked her. She was a hugely divisive figure from the very beginning. She appealed to the far right working class, the same people that Trump appeals to today. McCain was the one that moderates liked.

Moderates liked her before her first interview with Katie Couric. The McCain campaign was doing a good job of selling her until she was in a situation that wasn't totally scripted.

Also she did not finish her term as Governor.

It's right in the post.

I saw a documentary on Netflix about get called 'you betcha'. Showed how she went after people she had personal grievances with in Alaska when she became mayor/ governor. Many of the locals spoke badly of her. If I were the Donald I would keep her at arms length.

Like her brother in law was a state trooper and she went after him and tried to get him fired when his marriage broke down.

[–]Fishmachine 17ポイント18ポイント  (0子コメント)

Well, she seems to be just a giant hypocrite, just like most religious right-wing extremists, but failing miserably in any field she's preaching about - like having multiple bastard grandchildren, while preaching about sanctity of marriage and forcing abstinence-only education programs.

EDIT: not an American, so I don't follow her closely.

She supports dominionism as a political goal. That means she wants a christian run theocratic government based on, presumably, her interpretation of the bible.

Try watching Game Change. A pretty good HBO movie about the 2008 Presidential election which focuses on Palin's (Julianne Moore) minor rise and then her huge fall. In short, she's so right-wing that even ardent conservatives thinks she goes too far.

Her church also believed that they end times were coming and that only Alaska would be saved.

There's this scene as everything is falling apart that Moore just looks away, drinking her soda, and you realize that this woman is just so far in over her head. It made her somewhat tragic to me.

Now, she's back, and I lost all sense of innocence in her incompetent being.
