Charlie Hebdo has drawn an Aylan Kurdi cartoon and no one knows quite how to react

A
Charlie Hebdo
cartoon has been causing some serious unrest on Twitter.
January 7 marked a year since the
horrific terrorist attack
on the satirical magazine's offices in Paris.
A week on, it was swiftly back in the limelight after printing a drawing of Aylan Kurdi, the
Syrian boy who was found dead and washed up on a beach in Turkey.
It says [translated from French]: "What would little Aylan have grown up to be? Ass groper in Germany."
It prompted quite a reaction...
“Fucking HELL. Charlie Hebdo cartoon: "what would Aylan have become if he'd grown up? A bum groper in Germany". pic.twitter.com/WFPFaHeGZs— Marie Le Conte (@youngvulgarian) January 13, 2016
“Disgusting cartoon in Charlie Hebdo ("what would've become of Aylan had he grown up? A groper") via @faizaz pic.twitter.com/iB4myFb1ke— Sunny Hundal (@sunny_hundal) January 13, 2016
“Charlie Hebdo suggesting 'little Aylan' would have grown into a groping migrant. Still, #JeSuisCharlie cos it's cool https://t.co/Bs1rPEK3z9— Nooruddean (@BeardedGenius) January 13, 2016
“Charlie Hebdo staff becomes openly racist, writes "What if Aylan had lived? He'd have groped women in Germany". pic.twitter.com/YV1CJyFZiG— Nicolas Kayser-Bril (@nicolaskb) January 13, 2016
And so it continued.
The cartoon is clearly referencing the recent attacks in Cologne, Germany, which saw
nearly 100 women sexually assaulted and attacked on New Year's Eve.
The aftermath has seen a continent divided
- as a result, some are calling for Germany to take in fewer or no refugees from conflict zones in the Middle East and Africa, claiming it to be dangerous to do so.
Others argue that the attacks represent a tiny minority of refugees and the actions of a few shouldn't spoil the majority's chances of a new life.
This, then, forms another side to the argument - there are suggestions that Charlie Hebdo is making the obvious point, with the subversive, dark humour it's known for, that not
all
refugees are criminals.
“Hebdo - 'What would little Aylan have grown up to be? Ass groper in Germany'. Don't be apalled you just don't get it pic.twitter.com/LIYJEYjydy— Nesrine Malik (@NesrineMalik) January 13, 2016
Perhaps, rather than outwardly moving to convey that Aylan would've grown up a "groper," the magazine is saying that it's preposterous to think he would have -
reflecting the dismissal
of the idea that allowing more refugees into Germany will increase sex attacks.
“@youngvulgarian so almost every time I've RTed criticism of CH, I've had a tweet back saying I don't get French humour...— Elena Cresci (@elenacresci) January 13, 2016
