European conflicts decimated literally millions of people in the last century alone. Europeans are trigger shy today because we want to avoid making the same mistakes that took us to the brink twice in recent history.

Europe is the twitchy new guy at work who never sticks up for himself and has others saying "stick up for yourself and don't be a pussy or you'll get walked all over". Then you find out he got his job as part of his parole for killing all his workmates at his previous job. And that he had already killed most of his family before that.
