Final Fantasy VII. Seriously. It's not the best, but it's pretty good and is an easy to get into JRPG. After that try some of the older Final Fantasies, Final Fantasy IX, Dragon Quest, Tales, and then whatever you want.

Personally, Chrono Trigger, it tackles a lot of RPG tropes and is very forgiving while being a exceptionally great game. Story isn't complicated, great cast of characters, music, settings, it's one of those RPGs that you'll really struggle with deciding who to keep on your team as they're all really useful and well balanced.

Yeah, going 3D wasn't the best thing to ever happen to JRPGs.

Thats actually why I can't get into JRPGs even though I want too because the concept of many games look fun and in depth

Dokapon Kingdom. It's light on story so you can focus on actually playing the game and even though it's competitive you can easily co-op the main quest.

Omega Quintet looks as weeb as any, but is pretty damn fun and the combat is interesting. Yeah, lots of them are super pandering, but you really shouldn't judge them just because of looks.

I think it's just a more old school experience. Dokapon Kingdom lets you decide what kind of character you want to make and how you're going to win the game while modern games give you a role in the story they're telling and you don't have any choice but to follow along.

Story isn't innovative, but a nice mashup of christian and norse themes, which makes the following point possible.
It has a nice setting and varied areas.
Good sense of discovery and adventure.
Cute heroes, good villans/antiheroes.
It doesn't drag on forever. Very little filler/grind.
Great music.
Fun combat.
Neat things to discover if you decide to play it again.

It's like Killer 7, you're on rails and depending on how well you do in battle you get a resources tha lets you investigate different objects or take alternate paths through each area.
In combat you use up items to deal damage and each character has a different attack pattern for each item. It's alright, but you have to play a lot of fights in practice mode to get the extra stats for mastering each item.

So kinda like Knights in the Nightmare leveling system, It's weird how a series managed to have 3 games, all different gameplay styles, all different stories yet still be connected. Yggdra Union is still probably one of my favorite games of all time

A bit like a point and click adventure.
Move from screen to screen and inspect various things using points you earn in combat. Interacting with them gives you lore, items, triggers combat, opens new paths, buffs/debuffs etc.

Combat relies on using items which have durability. You can only take 4 into combat and various characters can use them in farious ways (single target, muti target, piercing, targeting front/back row, various special effects), and can learn special attacks as they use them, although only the character whose prefered items it is can learn the highest level of special attack.

Chrono Trigger is a good suggestion because it's a baby game for babies. As long as you fight the scripted encounters you'll easily blow past anything but the optional encounters.
