Lot of us planned to outfit their PC with a PCIe to USB3 extension card to have the USB3 ports for the Rift availible.
I ordered a PCIe extension card in advance and after installing it, it works totally fine with high bandwidth from USB3 devices.
However, the Oculus Compatibility Checker says my USB3 ports are incompatible with the Rift: http://i.imgur.com/y876wG7.png
Installing latest non-Microsoft drivers like suggested here did not change that, only a slightly different message appears for me: http://i.imgur.com/0Udan7L.png
There seems to be a lot of incopatibilities, discussion in the Oculus forums happening here.
According to this thread, incompatible controllers include at least:
  • VIA USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.0 (Microsoft)
  • ASMedia USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller
  • ASMedia XHCI Controller
  • Renesas USB 3.0 eXtensible-Hostcontroller
Looks I have to get another PCIe card, if those are really not working. Maybe they are just not tested?

Do we know why these cards are "failing" the check? Maybe the Compatibility checker isn't that accurate or has a limited database.
[–]RealParity[S] 1 point2 points3 points  (2 children)
I would like to know that too. Best case would be they are just not tested, or not in their database of compatible devices. As I said, they are working fine as USB3 for me, with high bandwidths from the USB devices I already have.
[–]idontsleepanymore 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
The screwed up thing is that the Kinect v2 requires an Intel or Renesas chipset to work- and they claimed it was because of bandwidth issues, the Kinect uses all the bandwidth of a USB3 controller. If Oculus doesn't support Renesas chipsets, theres some misinformation somewhere about usb controller speed.
[–]Pyromaniac605 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
It may not be a bandwidth issue.
My personal speculation on the the USB 3.0 requirement is for the full duplex capability, allowing them to replace the old sync cable from the DK2 with sync signals along USB. Maybe there's incompatibility in that regard.
[–]Leo-H-S 1 point2 points3 points  (8 children)
I wonder what USB 3.0 controllers are compatible.
[–]RealParity[S] 7 points8 points9 points  (7 children)
Oculus recommends only one extension card, this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FPIMJEW
[–]Habbert 0 points1 point2 points  (4 children)
I think Amazon changed what product that link directs to?
The KTU3FR-5O2I was originally linked by cyberreality. The 2 port card your link directs to does not make sense as 3 USB 3.0 ports are recommended.
[–]BuckleBean 1 point2 points3 points  (3 children)
I think you're right. I ran the check on the day preorders went live and the link provided sent me to the card you reference here. I picked it up right away and it just arrived on my doorstep.
[–]Habbert 0 points1 point2 points  (2 children)
Yeah, I TRIPLE checked to make sure I got the exact one listed by cyber because I had to use amazon.ca instead.
We should be using this link instead of the amazon one: http://www.inateck.com/5-plus-2-port-usb-pci-express-card-ktu3fr-5o2i/
[–]Crux_Archetype 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
the amazon link is correct, you just have to select the 5port one in the options.
[–]Habbert 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
They appear to have fixed the link, before it was only showing the two port card (by default) and the incorrect KTU3FR-5O2U card as an option.
[–]Leo-H-S -1 points0 points1 point  (0 children)
Better make sure my new motherboard has the 2 PCI slots for that.
[–]kami77 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
More info here, including a working PCI-E card:
Basically it looks like Intel and Fresco controllers are good. That throws a lot of motherboards more than a couple years old out of contention.
Amazon links for your convenience:
Note: technically any of the powered inateck ones should work since they all use Fresco controllers, but note that the 2 port one only gives you the extra front panel ports if your case supports that. It's safest to get one of the versions with 4 or 5 ports on the back. I can confirm the 5 port+20pin version passes the test for me.
[–]vanfanel1car 2 points3 points4 points  (1 child)
Here's what appears to be happening at least from what I can tell. Many motherboards seem to have multiple controllers for the USB ports. In many cases the controller for the front USB ports are different and in at least some cases this is what's causing the test to fail. If you disable that controller your test will pass. I think the oculus compatibility tool needs to be updated in some way letting you know that "hey, your 4 ports in the back can be used but the two up front can't"
[–]kami77 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Many motherboards older than a couple years use 3rd party controllers even for the rear ports. The Oculus tool gives you a different result (warning instead of a fail) if only some of your ports are incompatible.
[–]GW2-Ace 1 point2 points3 points  (5 children)
Do we know if a USB 3 HUB will work?
[–]kami77 2 points3 points4 points  (3 children)
The hub is still reliant on your USB controller, which is the issue here. A powered hub will most likely work, but it's probably best to run direct off the USB port if you have issues.
[–]GW2-Ace 0 points1 point2 points  (2 children)
Has Oculus established that it's going to really need that much bandwidth?
[–]kami77 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
Might be less of a bandwidth issue (if you mean 2.0 vs 3.0) and more of a power and/or latency thing. USB 3.0 standard provides almost twice as much power per port.
[–]GW2-Ace 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Ah, I didn't even think of that... Thanks!
[–]6x9equals42 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
It probably won't because those share bandwidth between ports. If you have a spare PCI-E slot this will work: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FPIMJEW (the 5 port version)
[–]StanleysBroomCloset 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Also keep in mind that some motherboards will use different controllers for some ports then others. My back USB 3 ports are intel, but the front are ASMedia (and according to the Oculus tool incompatible). So if some ports don't work when you receive your Rift, try some others if available!
[–]Absynthexx 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Useful info. Thanks!
[–]SirNotAppearing 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
I have the asmedia extensible controller, but my rig passed that portion of the test. I think the difference might be that I did not use the drivers provided with windows 10. Instead I used the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer for that device.

VIA USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0.6 (Microsoft)
---> has Problems but may working. It has a Orange Warning Marker instead of Incompatible.

Can anyone with an Intel Z97 chipset confirm that it passes the Rift comparability check? Just bought a new motherboard and CPU you get my CPU up to snuff... sigh
[–]yate 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
As far as I can see in this thread all Intel chipset controllers are passing fine.
[–]Karzak85 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Z97 chips use intels usb so they all work. The mb maker may have added extra usb that use different controller but there always should be some intel usb there. Read your mbs manuel, should say which usb is intel and which are other
Most other controllers dont work, they are all crap!
[–]evil-doer 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 5 - passes
[–]dandev6 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
I've got the first USB card you mentioned and the oculus system checker says it's fine
[–]Forstmannsen 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
At least one Renesas/NEC controller is reported as compatible (mine, can dig up exact ID if anybody needs it).
[–]DanThePatheticGamer -1 points0 points1 point  (0 children)
Regardless as to why this is happening let's make sure we bring this up on the r/pcmasterrace subreddit on the 10th.
