We are less than 24 hours away from one of the most momentous occasions in this young industry. Everybody who has been involved in VR these last 3 years, from backers to hangers on, can go forward forever knowing that "they were there."
Watching the formation of this industry from such a close perspective has been absolutely fascinating. When people speak of pie in the sky idealistic dreams that crowdfunding could help usher in, they will eternally point back to virtual reality as an example of an industry that was willed to life by supporters. This is not 3DTV, this was not a mandated "next big thing" from corporations, this was a coordinated, grass roots effort from thousands of passionate enthusiasts online.
Moments like this make me pause and reflect on what has been accomplished -- not just by Mega companies like Facebook, but by common, average individuals world-wide. Let's all just take a moment to recognize what is about to occur - tomorrow, an industry is birthed.
Happy VR day, y'all!

i love how this subreddit is on fire these days.
very exciting times!

It's ramping up. Every few hours it seems like there's another announcement.
The loading bar for VR is almost filled!

One day we can tell our grandkids about that day.
[–]AJSAMartin 4 points5 points6 points  (0 children)
Nothing to add, just want people to know I was here :D
It's so surreal, after watching what's possible in VR, I'm really considering buying the Rift straight away.
[–]humanmanguy 9 points10 points11 points  (0 children)
Beautiful words, /u/TheSonicRetard
[–]lizaverta 7 points8 points9 points  (0 children)
I refuse to celebrate until the Rift has shipped.
[–]HoustonVRHoustonVR 2 points3 points4 points  (3 children)
It's been an amazing ride getting from there to here. While I'm looking forward to all of the tech advances VR will see in the coming years, being a part of something amazing before it hits the public consciousness is a tremendous rush we're unlikely to experience again any time soon. I've enjoyed every minute of it.
[–]TheSonicRetardHalf-Life VR[S] 7 points8 points9 points  (1 child)
I've said it so many times, but it really did feel like the early days of the internet all over again. So cool that I got to experience something like that again in my lifetime.
[–]rhadiem 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
indeed. 3d printing is another awakening giant.

It's been an honour hyping with all of you guys. Wish you luck with all your VR related adventures :)
[–]ImprovedForce 4 points5 points6 points  (2 children)
I do believe that this technology is as big and important as the launch of television was. So yeah this is history.
[–]sintacs 3 points4 points5 points  (1 child)
I think it will be bigger.
[–]mckirkus 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
I think it'll be more like the launch of the telephone. Telegraphs worked but not like a conversation. VR is the minimum viable product required to obviate the office meeting, and that's a big deal. Your commute in 20 years will be measured in ms instead of miles or kilometers.
[–]SilentSpirit 3 points4 points5 points  (4 children)
Yes! I've been lurking now for 3 years this month, and I'm so excited. I've been checking this reddit about everyday since. I only wish there was some good to invest in VR and capitalize on this >_< lol. I am so excited this is finally happening. I've never even gotten to try VR, even , the Gear VR at my local buy wasn't working so I didn't even get to try that. I I haven't made my expectations too high and up disappointed. I'm gonna be building my PC for the rift! I'm so excited!
[–]vrgiant 1 point2 points3 points  (3 children)
The first time in VR is such an incredible experience. My first time was in 92-93, my second time (or my new first time) was 2014 and it was just on my Galaxy S3 in a holder I made, but I was blown away. I have a DK2 and a Gear VR now, and they are awesome, but part of me wishes that CV1 could be my first experience again. I don't think you will be disappointed.
[–]SilentSpirit 2 points3 points4 points  (2 children)
It's hearing things like this that make me excited. The reassurance that it will be good. I'm real glad that my first experience will be with CV1 actually!
[–]TD-4242 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
Keeping in perspective that it is still a screen strapped to your face, you will be blown away by how great it is. Thinking Star Trek holodeck and you could be disappointed.
[–]SilentSpirit 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
While my mind knows it is going to be limited basic VR, like wearing a pair of ski goggles for gaming with depth perception, I think my heart is more aligned with false expectations of a holodeck. I guess time will tell. As long as I can some sort of presence, and get a sense of truly exploring new places (feeling like I am there visually), and being able to meet and interact with people in a new way, I think I will be satisfied. edit: coherence

The reaction from my friends is telling.
  • Three years ago me: "Omg this new thing, so cool, you gotta check this out!"
  • Three years ago them: "Never gonna happen, gimmick, meh, too expensive..."
  • Them now: "Omg this new thing, so cool, you gotta check this out!"
  • Me now: "Finally! Yahoo, lets do this!"

pre-orders for the first consumer version of the oculus rift. The first consumer non-mobile VR headset of the modern VR era. A milestone moment for the medium - the day it finally becomes available to purchase. Begins at 8 am EST tomorrow.

The Gear VR seems to be pretty successful... possibly enough to to be considered the birth of consumer VR...
[–]IronclawFTW 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's moments like this where I look back at my post history and reminisce at my innocence when I was patiently waiting for the CV1.
Can't wait to see where VR takes us.
[–]sintheticreality 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
I'm so excited that I might end up going to the gym and picking a fight with a Pilates instructor. After I get tased I'll be the happiest guy in lock-up.
[–]steel_bun 0 points1 point2 points  (2 children)
The journey was much longer than these 3 years though.
[–]TheSonicRetardHalf-Life VR[S] 4 points5 points6 points  (1 child)
You can extrapolate that as far back as you want, to the birth of computing in general and even the foundations of electrical engineering. Most would agree the modern VR era began with the Oculus Rift kickstarter, even if much work was done on sites like MTBS3D prior.
[–]rhadiem 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
I still have a VR T-shirt from the 90s. ;)
[–]saintmain 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
I felt the same way with the DK1.. We knew this would change the world and in the proces, make a new world. The Oasis is waiting and I cant wait to go hunt for the keys and meet new people.
[–]Motor_Mortis 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
We are so lucky to be alive at a time like this. To be at the onset of the internet and now to be at the onset of VR. It's truly unbelievable.
[–]Anjz 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
A momentous event not only for gaming and entertainment, but for every perceivable aspects of our lives in the future.
[–]supremeleadersmoke 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
I am so jealous of all you devs set to make bank.
[–]unyunburst 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
I am becoming truly hyped at this time. All the other hype was in the back of my mind, negated because nothing was happening, nothing was real. Its REALLLLLLLL
[–]7Seyo7 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Cheers to the year of VR!
[–]Mageoftheyear 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
I can wait to see how this changes the world, to listen in on conversations where people have discovered presence for the first time. It's gonna be fun.

[–]gmarcon83 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Yes, I send the oculus blog post about them pre-orders yesterday to my friend and I told him that we are witnesses of a historical moment... But he didn't seem to care much.
It still baffles me that even some more tech savvy people can't seem to grasp the importance that VR will have in the future.

What are you talking about? VR has been driven forward by Facebook and HTC (and Valve). The independent software support for VR is no different to software support that mobile or other platforms have received.
3DTV didn't take off because you couldn't have small independent people producing 3D films in the same way as 'anyone' can program something for VR.
[–]eposnix 2 points3 points4 points  (10 children)
VR has been driven forward by Facebook and HTC (and Valve).
You do realize that Oculus started out as a Kickstarter campaign, right? Facebook, HTC, and Valve piggybacked off what the original contributors (Palmer included) started.
[–]kodiakus 0 points1 point2 points  (9 children)
VR development started long before the kickstarter. Valve was just as active in its development as Palmer was during the time when he was still just some guy on a forum with a thing for collecting HMDs.
[–]eposnix 0 points1 point2 points  (8 children)
Okay? That's not what this post is about. It's about the power of crowdfunding and how enthusiasts came together to help make this happen. No one is saying Palmer invented VR or that he was alone in all this.. that's a silly notion. But VR went from being the laughing stock of consumer tech to a legit, multi-billion dollar endevour in just a couple years because of what was started by crowd funding. And we are witnessing that.
[–]MichaelTenery 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
And not seeing that is a kind of sad willful blindness that is staggering to behold. What will happen tomorrow is a beginning. What happens after will be the real deal. It will get better over time and these will be the good old days. Ask Steve Wozniak about the home brew computer club and the start of the Apple I. That is what is happening. Mark my words. 10 years from now people will really be struggling to find a reason why they need a monitor for a computer when they can have foveated 12k rendering HMD that looks so much better and can simulate a dozen flat panel monitors.
[–]kodiakus -1 points0 points1 point  (6 children)
You imply that Palmer and the kickstarter were the beginning. They were not even close to it. They even used some Valve tech. Lots of tech from all over, actually.
Chalking it all up to the crowd funding is not doing the effort justice.
[–]eposnix 0 points1 point2 points  (5 children)
You'll have a hard time convincing me we would be here today if it weren't for the Kickstarter. A by-product of the Kickstarter, the DK1, is what drove people to realize that VR could be a legit thing. Prior to this, VR was a joke (and to some people still is... just check the comments on /r/gaming some time). Getting the DK1 into consumer hands, and subsequently onto sites like Youtube, is what drove the hype. You're welcome to say Valve or whoever started the tech, but the hype was created by the Kickstarter.
[–]kodiakus 0 points1 point2 points  (4 children)
The hype, and the technology, was inevitable. Luckey got lucky. Developers, both software and hardware, across many years and many platforms, worked hard to provide good hardware and good experiences.
The kickstarter was a funding event, that's it. If the community hadn't gotten involved and actually used the dev kits for development, there would be no hype and VR would still be a few years off. Oculus didn't develop any demos, didn't make any lets plays, etc. etc. The hype was created by the third parties.
There's a lot more to this than just a stupid kickstarter.
[–]eposnix 0 points1 point2 points  (3 children)
Oculus didn't develop any demos, didn't make any lets plays, etc. etc
I guess you're excluding the VR Jam, in which 300+ teams competed for $10,000, and is where many of the demos we play today came from. I guess that was nothing.
[–]kodiakus 0 points1 point2 points  (2 children)
yeah. 300 teams that weren't Oculus. And it wasn't kickstarter related, either.
[–]eposnix 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
You have issues with understanding cause and effect, dude.
