I think all this is rooted in the anorexia epidemic. However, the solution is not to turn every female character into whales wearing bhurka, but to reinforce positively the girls, and encourage them to get a healthy BMI without making them feel alienated.
Sadly, there's women who are at odds with reality and would rather twist the world than their arm.
