Storage options

Please note: this page reflects operations in MindMup 1.0 and was not yet updated for version 2.0. Version 2.0 only supports saving to Google Drive at the moment

MindMup supports several storage options for your maps. They have hugely different capabilities and constraints. Once a map is modified, the toolbar and menu bar show the save button. The icon next to Save shows the currently selected storage option. Clicking on Save (blue) button directly will save to that storage. Clicking on the icon will open a drop-down with storage options, and allow you to select an alternative option for storage. You can also open this list from the File-&gtSave As menu.
  1. MindMup Anonymous Public Storage. This is a free, public, anonymous storage we provide for maps on the Amazon's S3 file storage service. All maps are public, and once saved, they become read-only. This is because the system is anonymous, and we don't know who created the original map. Any change to a map creates a new map, saved under a new URL, even if you do it during the same browser session. Anyone can view any map, provided that they have the URL. We make URLs random to give you some kind of privacy, but don't use this for anything you don't want exposed to public. We keep these maps for six months.
  2. MindMup Gold. This is a storage we provide for maps on the Amazon's S3 file storage, that removes many of the limitations of the anonymous storage. Because we know who owns each map, map URLs are permanent across versions, and you can discover and open your maps on any device or browser. For more information, see MindMup Gold documentation.
  3. Google Drive. This storage is provided by Google, and connected to your Google account. You decide who can access your maps, and what they can do with them.  Changes to a map are saved to the original file. Maps are loaded and stored directly from your browser to Google Drive, never passing through our systems. You can use this for private and sensitive content, as long as you trust Google with the data. Google Drive also provides a file synchronisation application for most platforms, enabling you to automatically back up your maps to your local hard disk or company file share (for more information, see Working with Google Drive).
  4. Dropbox. This storage is provided by Dropbox, and connected to your Dropbox account. Only you can access the maps.  Changes to a map are saved to the original file. Maps are loaded and stored directly from your browser to Dropbox, never passing through our systems. You can use this for private and sensitive content, as long as you trust Dropbox with the data. Dropbox also provides a file synchronisation application for most platforms, enabling you to automatically back up your maps to your local hard disk or company file share (for more information, see Working with Dropbox).
  5. GitHub. (Requires you to activate the extension) This storage is provided by GitHub, and allows you to decide who can access your maps and what they can do with them. Changes to a map are saved to the original file. Maps are loaded and stored directly from your browser to GitHub, never passing through our systems. You can use this for private and sensitive content, as long as you trust GitHub with the data. You can use any git application to backup the files or transfer the to other machines.
As a general rule of thumb, use our public storage when you want to share something with the world. Use Google Drive, Dropbox or GitHub storage when you want to share something with a limited group of people, or to work on a map on your own. Use browser storage for things you work on privately or do not want to share with anyone else.
