Bleaching Jet Black (dyed) hair is a tricky process if you are doing it at home and since I’ve bleached my hair from jet black dye to brown or blonde a few times before, I decided to tell you how I do it.
Today I used the
Syoss Professional Hair Lighteners 13-0.
This bleach is supposed to lighten up to 8 levels.
Before starting to bleach your hair, go through the basic info to understand what you can expect of your bleach.
❤Your hair has a certain level of pigmentation. Notice that the levels are measured by how light/dark your hair is, not by the colour of your pigment, that’s why you can’t find red in this chart.
❤If you are bleaching your natural hair, it will go up a few levels at a time, depending on how dark it is. But you will get to blonde quicker than it takes to get to it by bleaching processed hair.
❤Jet Black hair dye has a RED undertone. That’s why, when bleaching your jet black hair, regardless of your natural colour, you will end up with a red tone. Expect this and be prepared for it.
❤It is possible, depending on the bleach and on your hair, that you only manage to go lighter by 1 or 2 tones, regardless of what the brand of the bleach promises. So you might end up with a brown or red brown, even after holding the bleach on for an hour.
Don’t worry, the colour will lift up eventually after a few more bleaches.
❤Also, it is possible that bleaching your hair two times in a row in the same day will not lift you to a lighter shade. Your hair needs time to rest, so let it do that after the first bleach. This guarantees that the second one will be more effective.
❤Most girls get stuck at the orange stage, and no matter how many times they bleach after that if doesn’t seem to lift. It will, you just need to wait a good amount of time between bleaches and use toner. If you are stuck on orange, just dye it a light chocolate brown, don’t go back to black because all your effort would have been for nothing.
My experience with SYOSS LIGHTENERS 13-0
I wanted to get rid of the jet black and make room for a chocolate medium brown, and since I’ve never tried the bleaches from Syoss, only the hair dye, I decided to give them a go. I picked up two boxes of 13-0, which is said to lighten your hair up to 8 levels.
Of course, given the stage of my hair, I didn’t expect it to go that light.
❤After mixing the developer with the bleaching powder, I noticed the paste had a sandy feel to it, like the powder had not blended into the developer. This happened with the first tube and I thought it was my bad mixing at fault, but then I got the same result from the second tube. Meh, maybe it’s me and I’m not doing something right, but just to put it out there, I’ve been colouring and bleaching my hair by myself for 10 years now…
I applied the paste on the lenght of my hair, avoiding the roots. If your roots are also grown out when you are bleaching the old dye, try not to put bleach on them because: 1- there’s no need to ruin good, healthy, virgin hair, and 2- your roots will end up yellow while the rest of your hair will be red.
❤I kept the bleach on for ONE HOUR AND A HALF!!!!!❤
Because after one hour it didn’t lift much to be honest.
After one hour and a half it finally lifted up to a red. Of course, some strands of hair lift better than others. I have orange-red on the upper half of my head and brown red underneath it. This doesn’t bother me since I was going to dye my hair brown anyway, but if you want to go blonde, I strongly suggest going with another bleach. Matrix lifted me from jet black to gold- orange a couple of years ago and I think that’s the best bleach from what I’ve used so far, if you want to lighten your hair up to blonde.
❤As for the SYOSS LIGHTENERS 13-0 I used, I can’t say it’s a good bleach or that I’m going to use it again, but I just wanted a little lift so it did the job for me. The powder that did not blend in the paste bothered me, and It only lifted 4-5 levels, so it’s only ok for those of you who want to get a medium to dark colour, but useless for those who want blonde.
After the process my hair is drier than before, but not much damage was done, I can actually repair all of my hair completely with a special oil and a luxy hair care line I’m using.
❤Also, be careful, you might get ALLERGIC REACTIONS AND RASHES! I didn’t pre test the bleach, but I was applying it 2 inches away from my scalp, so I wasn’t worried, but a drop of it fell on my arm and I got a seriously ugly reaction from it. Just test the bleach first!
All in all, I am happy with the results, now I’ll just wait 3 days before colouring my hair so that I can apply some masks and pick a brown tone I like.
I’ll do a follow up post with how to recover your dried, damaged, bleached hair completely, I, as much as you, hate having to cut from the lenght of my hair just because of damage, so I never cut it after a bleach. I just repair it.

I was going for a medium brown but it turned out kind of dark, I hope it will wash away in time because I feel that I’ve bleached for nothing :D

Looks beautiful!! I had black hair for a while (actually by accident even though i ended up liking it) and it certainly was a process to get it lighter again. This info probably would have been helpful back then ;)

The red really suits you, I had a long process going from red to blonde but I only used the bleach once every 3 months. So that I could limit the damage and give a good amount of recovery time between sessions.
Im looking forward to seeing you with a brown, I think you would rock chocolate with caramel tones.

Seriously, I know you mentioned that you are going to dye it brown, but I have to say that I have never seen hair turn such a beautiful reddish shade after bleaching.

The other times I must admit it would always turn orange! I guess this time I had a lot of dye in it :D

I have naturally black hair, but I’ve started to dye it when I turned 13 because I had a hideous amount of grey hairs (I was born with them, meh). I dyed it black, blue-black, dark red, light red, basically every color on the dark spectrum. Once I was nearly 17, I decided I want a change and I had long black-dyed hair (up to my middle back), but the greys were horrible. I think i used Garnier for the first time, I don’t remember exactly which one, but it was one that lightens the most, and I used two packs for my entire hair. It was a pretty failed attempt, I was yellow, orange and brown, I think I started the ombre trend hahah. But I love changes so it was good, and I decided not to bleach it unless I had to. I dyed my hair every month and I was dark orange, light orange, strawberry blonde, every possible shade, and I cut my hair up to my shoulders too. Everytime I dyed it, it was lighter, and it took me nearly two years to get the lovely blonde shade I want. But I did get it, and I only bleached myself once, two months ago, dunno why really, I didn’t need it at all. I bought this dye today and I’m hoping for good results, I don’t care much, I just want to look different whenever I can. But if you are aiming on going from black to blonde, without much damage to your hair, I recommend Garnier (preferably Color Sensation, it comes with some purple-pink things on the box). I’ve used nearly every dye there is in these 6 years I’ve been dying my hair, from the 20$ per box to 1$ per box and Garnier is the best one there!

Thank you for the advice! I will try Garnier next time, I know it can be a long process to lighten your hair if it’s really dark. I actually coloured my hair a medium brown after this bleach and I never dyed it since, so maybe it’s time. Thank you again ^_^
