Worthless without access to enterprise 365 and corporate environments
Millions of users are tied to enterprise licensed office 365 accounts which Cortana is unable to connect to. Because this contains all of the worthwhile information that a virtual assistant could exploit, and is a key advantage for Microsoft, it seems inconceivable that they could botch this crucial connection point. This is a setting that corporate admins can change, but I'm guessing that 99 percent of them have it disabled for security concerns. In all fairness- one could argue this isn't Microsoft's fault, but if admin's aren't comfortable enabling access, then MS needs to change the configuration requirements and make IT nerds feel more comfortable about it.
So- in my search for the perfect digital assistant, which is being pursued by Apple, MS, Google, and various startups like x.ai with Amy, I'm facing disappointment again.
Without this integration, I could care less about weather updates, spammy event notifications and package tracking, all of which are 100 percent commoditized in dozens of other native and app integrations. I want my intelligent assistant to be able to parse my email, calendar, and contacts to add value in my workday, and this does not seem possible for many of us who work for companies with enterprise 365 licenses.
Meh
As an avid Halo fan, I was hoping to be able engage Cortana in some playful banter and probe her for info from the Halo universe. Sadly, the developers didn't include really anything Halo related into her "personality" (save for the recognition of the name Master Chief).
As fas as actual usefulness, voice recognition is good and web queries pull up pertinent information. However, the "Hey Cortana" function does not work with the app open or backgrounded. In addition, due to iOS' strict restrictions on app/OS integration, Cortana's usefulness is severely impaired and nearly useless compared to Siri.
App spies on your location ALL THE TIME!
This is crazy, I was getting to work and hadn't used my phone in half an hour, turn on my phone and see Cortana using my location. It seems like Microsoft really wants to know where you are. You basically can't use the Cortana app unless you let it track you all the time even with background apps disabled. Same with notifications. My fault for trying out the much hyped MS personal assistant.
