"How dare you make your own decisions in life that don't impact me in any way!"
Hell, you could argue someone joining the Air Force does impact them. Obviously not very significantly as a single individual, but the military as a whole.
Yeah, it gives them the freedom to say these idiotic things without getting sent to state reeducation camps to make big rocks into little rocks until they die.
[–]Paradox💩lord [
They could make the big rocks into little rocks, then use the little rocks as conglomerate to make concrete, which is, in effect, big rocks. The cycle contiues

That's just strawmanning. For a long time now the military's main purpose has been much less "protecting our freedoms" and much more "exerting our influence over people with oil".
[–]CaptainUnusual1/1 White Kithkin Token [
Did you know that, the stronger a military is, the less likely it is to have to use its power?
Speak softly and carry a big stick, and what not.
We have the big stick. It's called an ICBM, and only other people who are ideologically similar to us have them, too. Most modern wars we go to is more akin to a big stick versus a violent marmot.
You think China, Russia, Pakistan, and North Korea are ideologically similar to us?
Well, Pakistan and North Korea.... Less so. But their combined arsenal could take out a few U.S cities. Our arsenal could make new beachfront property. North Korea doesn't even have the missile capabilities to reach Japan, let alone the U.S.A. Also China is a Capitalist one party system. Anyone who still calls China Communists has been in a coma the last thirty years. Plus, the economic growth of Chinese Leaders is entirely dependent on Americans wanting shit from China. Russia also claims to be a Capitalist Republic, albeit they're more forthcoming with their corruptions. At least Russia is civil enough to agree to proxy wars instead of bombing each other directly. In the end the big "threats" still align more politically with the US than don't. The peace may be tenuous, but it's still peace.
Considering the US has been at war one way or another for basically as long as it has existed as a nation I'd say that's not really the lesson here. The lesson is if you have a massive military just letting it stand around is wasting money.
How's that working out for you? Do you want to get into a few more quagmires in the middle east?
[–]JaredWin8452transethnic, genderfluid, meatpopsicle, planetkin [
military member here. That's cool with me. You want the russians influencing the oil people? Nope. American hegemony or it's the russians and the chinese.
Good old fear mongering, that never fails.
not really fear mongering when its true
What a ridiculous comment. Are you that dumb naturally or does it take practice? If the US Military cease to exist tomorrow it would take days at most for abuses to arise overseas, and within a year or two at most the power vacuum would have sucked China or other adventurers to the West Coast, or at least Hawaii.
You are assuming that the new global powers will be more abusive than the US
Well there has never been one less abusive... By many orders of magnitude. Pretty safe assumption!
There are many people who would argue that there has never been one more abusive. I'm going to guess that you are American here and have your own bias?
If you think history is that relative, there's no reason to think you value basic principles of logic, or even the most generic morality.
More likely, you're just historically illiterate and/or indoctrinated.
These two purposes are not mutually exclusive in any way. Using your military offensively doesn't mean it has less defensive value. It's just that one would attack the United States for obvious reasons... Because of the military.
Those goddamned Viet Cong and their oil. Just think how rich Dick Cheny would be if we had that oil.

Someone who believes most of the $600 billion we spend each year on our military could be better spent at home? Yeah, you got me.

You do realize most people in the military work in the United States, right?
The vast majority (941,629 personnel) were stationed at bases within the contiguous United States. There were an additional 37,245 in Hawaii and 20,450 in Alaska; 84,461 were at sea, 2,972 in Guam, and 179 in Puerto Rico.
Source
The military supplies these people with stable jobs and they spend the money they make in the United States to circulate back through the economy. Another chunk of the money spent on defense is from defense contractors who are almost all American companies that pay American employees, and all that money is spent "at home".
I'm assuming you don't really have good knowledge about the military and just spout random "facts" off with no context because it fits you're agenda. Kind of reminds me of what a group of people do at this one popular blogging site I know of.

Here's one of my favorite quotes from someone who knew a bit about the military:
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms in not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some 50 miles of concrete highway. We pay for a single fighter with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people. This, I repeat, is the best way of life to be found on the road the world has been taking. This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.

Just because the spending goes to Americans and they turn around and spend that in the US, doesn't mean it's sustainable in any way...
Let's say I'm a baker and I open up a brand new bakery and employ my son. I decide to pay him a salary of $100,000 dollars because I'm stupid. He uses it to buy cool things like cars, luxuries, etc. Very quickly my company will lose all of its money and I'll be bankrupt even though the money stayed in the family.
The money wasn't put back into the business to help it grow and I was paying him too much. Now I have to borrow money from China to fund my son's F-35 joint strike fighter program.

His post implied that the 600 billion dollar defense budget was thrown away to over seas countries when that couldn't be further from the truth. Can we improve defense spending? Obviously, but to say that all the defense budget is a waste is simply ignorant.
And your analogy doesn't really line up for an assortment of reasons that I feel I don't even need to point out.
Your argument is that he doesn't have any knowledge about the military, but my argument is that you don't have a basic grasp of simple economics.
You're literally arguing that the $600 billion is spent by Americans, for Americans, who are going to spend their money in America, and that's OK.
That's not the same thing. If the American Military was not 'exerting it's infleuence' than Russia and China would definitely be, and several dozen nations would be scrambling to revitalise their own much reduced peacetime militaries to match the imbalance.
The waste of Pentagon budgets vs civil infrastructure is an entire seperate issue.
That's an opinion you have. An extremely brain-dead and ignorant opinion, but still an opinion.
This is literally what happens if not enough people join the military.
Nobody is "coming to take our freedom". The notion is divorced from reality and ridiculous.
What's divorced from reality is your historical perspective.

When was the last time the US military was involved in something that actively protected the freedom of US citizens?
1 second ago. Their mere existence is sufficient to do that at this moment in history.
How high are you right now?

No, we only do that to you if you smoke or snort something we don't like.
