Senator Leyonhjelm tells NRA Australia is 'nation of victims'

Speaking on an NRA video, pro-gun senator David Leyonhjelm says Australia is a 'nation of victims' due to gun control laws.

Liberal democratic senator David Leyonhjelm has appeared in a video for the National Rifle Association of America in which he describes Australia as a "nation of victims" because of the government's tough stance on gun control.

In an interview, the anti-gun control senator warns the United States not to follow Australia's example after presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton said a gun buyback scheme similar to the one John Howard introduced in 1996 was worth considering.

"I don't think Australia is a model for the United States on gun control at all," Senator Leyonhjelm says in the NRA clip.

Australia's strict gun laws have been a talking point during the US presidential race, where advocates of restrictions have pointed to the fact there have been no gun massacres in Australia since 1996.

Senator Leyonhjelm, however, insisted in his interview that the Howard scheme had made "no difference to firearms violence, gun violence overall".

"We are a nation of victims," he said.

"The criminals still have guns, there's no shortage of guns. There's a very vigorous black market for guns, so it's really not made the slightest bit of difference."

"It's a defenceless country these days. I am absolutely in awe of the success of the NRA at holding back the tide and it never gives an inch.

"We love the NRA here in Australia amongst us gun owners and in fact we rely on you guys to also help us hold the line in Australia."

Senator Leyonhjelm has called for more rights for gun owners since his election to the Senate at the 2013 election but his calls for more Australians to carry guns have been rejected by the major parties.

However, he was able to negotiate for the government to lift a ban on the importation of the Adler lever-action shotgun next year, in exchange for voting against Labor amendments to migration legislation.

The remainder of the NRA video consists of interviews NRA News' Ginny Simone conducted back in 1998 with Australian gun owners who were unhappy they had to surrender their guns for the government buyback.

She says Australia had conducted a "political fraud: gun bans that haven't made a difference and gun owners now struggling to stop a growing momentum against them".

  • Did he mention to the Americans that he is an accidental senator who won his seat by pure luck, and therefore does not represent Australia at all?
As a gun lover of course he wants guns.

    • What rights has he had removed?
He can still walk in to a gun shop and if appropriately licenced he can purchase a gun.
It seems he thinks he should be allowed to also go in and buy a tank or F16 fighter with all the accompanying ammunition!

    • The NRA must be rubbing their hands together at this guy. In America, they pay the senators to do their bidding. This one is doing it for free!

    • Leyonhjelm won his seat thanks to a combination of luck and stupidity. He was first on the Senate voting list, so anybody who wanted to vote for the Liberals who was either too lazy or stupid to read further just put a one next to him and his party: the Liberal Democrats.

He of course insists that this was not the case at all - I guess we'll find out at the next election.

    • @ Jagg Even when doing it for free Leyonhjelm is overpriced. When I think of gun owners, I am reminded of the wagging of little fingers in the NSW anti-speeding campaigns.

    • I hope the good Senator had the honesty to inform the NRA that the only reason he has a senate seat is because he was elected by voters too stupid to be able to tell the difference between the Liberal Party and The Liberal Democratic Party. So he has no business claiming to speak on behalf of any Australians other than those who cannot read properly.

The only victims in Australia are those who now have to put up with Listening to Leyonhjelm and his out of touch drivel.

What kind of man would want Australia to follow the US in their easy access to Guns and the mass shootings they lead to? He obviously sees no problem with children being shot up in their classrooms or when going about their daily shopping etc.

These gun nuts are totally out of touch with reality. In their minds, they see themselves as the star in a wild west movie where when faced with a gun toting baddie, they will whip out their pistol and shoot all over them, taking out the baddie and saving the day. The reality of course is quite different when you look at the statistics and see that almost no mass shootings have been stopped by a member of the public using his/her gun. It’s just a fantasy that they use to justify their need to carry a gun to compensate for their puny manhood.

    • The 'accidental senator' actually believes in the NRA mantra that all Americans should carry guns in case the government ever goes viral and they need to get their country back.

They should win too, eh David? All the government has are nuclear weapons, cruise missiles, thousands of tanks, thousands of planes, hundreds of ships and thousands of bombs. NRA should win that fight ;(.

People of NSW please check the ballot paper before you tick the box at the next election. David 'lets go shoot something' Leyonhjelm could be the one you are selecting.
