They erected this monument to 9/11 during the 10th anniversary. France is historically a close ally.

We're fake-enemies. We make fun of each other and pretend to hate each other but when it really matters we're legit allies. Like brothers.

Wrong. Canada is our brother. France is our hot older sister.

fuck yeah

Canadian here. Kind of just teared up reading these two comments.

You're that next door neighbor who will not only lend us a cup of sugar, but go out and buy a whole pound when all you need is to fill our cup. We return the favor by shooting that shady guy we catch peeking in your windows when you are on vacation.

[–]Come_To_r_Polandball 15ポイント16ポイント  (1子コメント)

The meter reader is shady as fuck. Don't want the public utilities fucking with your freedom.

I always thought Canada was the bastard child of England and France who spent too much time with Scotland. America spent too much time with Ireland.

That is... surprisingly succinct.

Then Mexico is the weird single uncle that your parents wont let you visit alone

No, that's Russia. Mexico is our cousin.

The one that always has the GOOD fireworks.

snakes and sparklers

You're gonna stand there, ownin' a fireworks stand, and tell me you don't have no whistlin' bungholes, no spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker don'ts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistlin' kitty chaser?

no... snakes and sparklers are the only ones I like

And you know, the French are like totally DTF anything, so hot sister is fair game.

The United States of America wouldn't exist if it weren't for France. We owe them big time. Also they gave us that dope-ass Statue of Liberty. It was the least we could do to kick that smelly German out their house. Anytime, France. We got you. America + France = Bros 4lyfe since 1775.

Yup. Lafayette kicked butt leading troops for us in the Revolution. Several of my ancestors fought with him. So sad for them tonight.

Lafayette, we are here.

[–]Sir_smokes_a_lot 5ポイント6ポイント  (0子コメント)

Motherfuckers nickname was "Hero of the Two Worlds"

Damn. Your comment makes me realize how much I respect the hell out of France. They have our back through and through. I hope our government does something to honor those lost today.

What about poor old Russia, and little old Britain? we helped do Germany too...

Russia is our rival, China is the weird kid we are nice to because he's conniving.

Sweden is the hot blonde foreign girl.

Britain's like our mother who was a little bit of an overbearing cunt when the time came for us to strike out on our own. There's love there, but it's complicated.

Edit: Russia is that guy we got really close to one year at school, but now he posts some really racist and homophobic shit on Facebook and you're not sure how to approach him anymore.

Yeah but that government was subsequently overthrown during the French Revolution. People always seem to forget this.

that's the "fraternite" in "liberte egalite fraternite"

Yeah. We both like to take the piss, but we're all there when it matters.

As a US citizen who is somewhat familiar with the US Revolutionary War era, I read "France is historically a close ally" as "without France, the US would not exist". Granted, both nations have changed substantially in the interim, we should remember.

They also would likely not exist after WW2 without US. Full circle. We should probably give them some memorial as well for the events of today's attacks.

It could also be said that those roles were somewhat reversed during World War 2, with a more "hands on" approach. But I totally see where you're coming from.

It was disheartening to see the Bush administration and Fox news try to paint them as evil people for not supporting the Iraq invasion.

I mean freedom toast and fries? Seriously? Last time America did something like that was when sour kraut was renamed to freedom cabbage during WW1 when we fought against Germany.

Did anybody really take the whole Freedom Fries thing seriously? I always thought it was more a thing people joked about.

The same people who think Starbucks' undecorated red cups are waging a war on Christmas.

So basically, idiots...

Not just idiots, the pridefully ignorant. The people who have made up their mind about a situation even though they know they don't understand the implications or the scale or the whole story. They don't care to learn the rest and will not listen to reason on the subject.

I have not seen a single person actually complaining about the god damn cups, just people complaining about the people complaining about the cups.

Of course. Because only 1 person was actually upset, then every news site had a field day because it's a really easy way to get ad revenue from page views.

Congress actually renamed items on the menus of three congressional cafeterias.

Congress doesn't exactly represent the views of the average American though.

It represents the government intention, which is the insulting thing.

I definitely agree, it does point out that it was a bit more than a joke though.

I'm with you. If nation's representatives and leaders have congressional cafeterias where this happened it's definitely not a joke. It's hilarious and embarrassing, but definitely not a joke.

It's sad that in theory the complete opposite should be said.

I feel like if people really think a lot of americans, at least 50%, weren't generally being assholes towards france and calling them pussies in the early 2000s, then they have super short memories.

Like some one else said, Idiots.

I know a few people who took it very seriously and still do. I WISH they were joking.

When I was in high school in Louisiana during that time, a bunch of places renamed french fries to freedom fries.

I knew people that told me during the few years following 9/11 that they "hated the French." I asked "why? Because their government decided they did not want to invade Iraq?"

"Yes" those friends would say.

I was stunned. They had no concept of the magnitude of the Bush ultimatum of, "you're either with us or against us."

So, you have two options, either join us and follow everything we do, or not join us and become our enemy?

It was a very sad day when I learned that so many people I knew hated the French not only just for the choices of the French government (when I asked, "do you hate Chinese people? Because the Chinese gov't isn't exactly known for their high standards when it comes to human rights for their own citizens." They didn't have a response to that.)

A fundamental principle of being American is having a choice. A choice to disagree. But so many people I knew called the French "traitors" or "weak" or "cowards" because they chose (wisely, as it turned out) to not become militarily engaged in Iraq like the US did.

No it was in High schools for our school lunches. absolutely ridiculous and crazy.

Freedom Fries

Liberty Toast

Wow, I went to france about 10 years ago so this wasn't up then. This is really amazing for France to do. I really hope our government lends them as much aid as possible during this tragedy.

France was a first ally, even before we were our own country. We go way back, us and France.

France, we love you. We always have.

Plus we like to mimic each other. Americans love French stuff and the French liked our revolution so much that they had their own.

Didn't go as well for them though :/. We both love Ben Franklin though, so there's that.

We're like close buddies. Sure we talk shit to each other, but we're not going to let someone else talk shit about them and we're certainly not going to let something like today go unpunished.

Well said! To the people of France you made the USA happen in 1776 now it's our turn to kick some A for you!

Did you forget about world war 2? Not that I don't agree with you

Many French, many of them very young, sacrificed their lives in the resistance and underground networks. They were citizen spies and soldiers standing up to an entire regime. They were an invaluable asset when the US finally entered the war...much the same when they helped with our revolution, with their revolution.

France fought their asses off. The rest of the world was fighting for years before the USA entered the ring.

We're like Vegeta and Goku!

Well, Goku was only a little stronger than Vegeta. We're more like Goku and Krillin.

Ehhhh, Goku and Piccolo. One is the undisputed heavyweight superpower who's kind of a little obsessed with getting stronger, one has some serious muscle to flex but is more reserved about it.

Wait, but Goku and Piccolo started as enemies, so maybe Piccolo is the UK?

Japan is Android 18, I know that much for sure.

Vegeta and Goku were enemies at one point too, you dingleberry.

Also, why does Japan = android 18? I figured master roushi was Japan.

Right, I was responding to Goku and Krillin, not Vegeta and Goku. TBH I think Vegeta would work better as Germany maybe? You could argue the Russians but they're not exactly on good terms with us yet (so it could be early Buu saga).

Japan is Android 18 because she was a relatively recent rival who became a powerhouse when they turned to our side, and also Japan loves robots.

And have you seen the porn they draw of her?

Edit: Gohan is 100% Canada. Everyone thinks of him as Goku Jr, and he's mild-mannered and nice and goofy most of the time, but don't piss him off.

Guys, we're already talking about DBZ and it's like the tenth comment in a thread about the shootings

[–]Swabia 3

Vegeta would be Great Britain. Before meeting Goku, Vegeta was one of the most powerful forces in the galaxy. Planet after planet annihilated for the sake of his imperialist obsession.

Australia is Trunks

France is Piccolo

Absolutely. Still trying to wrap my head around this. Stay strong.

there would be no U.S. without France and far too few Americans know this - their money and support helped us win our revolution and they sold us some land cheap and pretty much all we had to do was have Ben Franklin sleep with their women

[–]yodels_for_twinkies 72ポイント73ポイント  (25子コメント)

and the Statue of Liberty

Ben Franklin slept with the Statue of Liberty?

At this point we can neither confirm, nor deny whether, or not Lady Liberty has had relations with Mr. Franklin.

Historical Fact: Ben Franklin was a man whore

didn't Ben Franklin have syphilis

We have a million streets named after Lafayette in America. How could you not know unless you didn't go to 3rd grade history.

We need to do something similar for them. They have always been our bros.

I often make pretty harsh jokes towards the French, however, they're our oldest ally and today they have my greatest condolences.

Same here, I love joking about how "weak" they are, but in reality they have been amazing and brave for so long. And I salute the fallen

Don't they have a track record for of one of the most successful militaries in the world, in terms of throughout their history? I know I read somewhere that basically up until WWII specifically France's military has always been a powerhouse, win or lose, in every war they've been a part of. I'd hardly call that weak.

Yep, they also have one of the best, most modern militaries in the world. They're the only other nation who has a nuclear aircraft carrier, their air force is top notch, and their special ops have been kicking ass in Africa for the past several years. It just doesn't fit with any circle jerk anti-France narrative :P

Considering the fact they were with us since the beginning. Supplying the colonials to fight the British.

As President Obama said earlier tonight, France is our oldest ally. We may tease and kid from time to time but the United States and France have an incredibly long history of always having each other's backs during the darkest of times. Stay strong my French brothers and sisters.

Je suis Paris. I'm American, but tonight, too shaken to eat my dinner, glued to CNN, remembering... we are, all of us, French. We are repulsed, infuriated, sickened, angry, and horribly sad. Stand strong, Paris. We are with you, feeble as it sounds. Our hearts are breaking and we are praying.

Yep, I was supposed to study tonight, but i can't really focus on anything. Just awful, awful news tonight. Parisians: Stay safe. From, America

EDIT: my bad.

As an American I know the flag isn't supposed to be on the ground, or with people's feet on it, but I'll still give them a nod of respect.

In Boy Scouts I was taught that the flag could hit the ground and whatnot so long as it wasn't done in a manner of disrespect. By that standard there is nothing wrong with this picture.

Speaking from a military perspective, the flag is never to touch the ground. I was taught that if it ever comes into contact with the ground in any form, then it is to be retired permanently. I appreciate what the French are doing though, not something to nitpick in times of such solidarity.

Edit: as said by /u/PunkAssGhettoBird below.

IT'S NOT A LEGIT AMERICAN FLAG, IT'S SEWED TOGETHER WITH VARIOUS DISCREPANCIES SO THAT IF/WHEN IT TOUCHES THE GROUND IT'S NOT CONSIDERED DISRESPECT. THESE FLAGS ARE USED FOR CEREMONIAL REASONS, PERHAPS THE BEST KNOWN USE IS DURING SPORTING EVENTS.

If it is the official colors it's the same in Boy Scouts I think. If it isn't (like those little flags we put on veterans graves that pretty much always touch the ground) then it's acceptable. But I was a terrible Boy Scout.

Don't get me wrong, I love my country and am reasonably patriotic. But the undying devotion to the flag itself has always seemed weird to me. Can't we be patriotic without borderline worshiping a piece of fabric?

The pledge of allegiance is weird too. Kinda strange to take a step back and realize that we had kids nationwide daily reciting their undying devotion.

I dunno. I'm all about the national anthem before sporting events and such, but the flag stuff weirds me out.

I used to think the pledge was a weird thing too. I always participated in class because I didn't exactly mind it, but it did feel kind of brain-washy... Just sort of mindlessly going through our loyalty. But I've thought about it a bit and I really like it now. We pledge our allegiance not to any leader, or even to our government, but to our flag and the nation it is symbolic of.

I think that's why the flag is treated this way in America. I'm sure we're not unique in this, but our flag is more than just an icon, it carries with it all sorts of American values. Since kindergarten we've learned to love and cherish our flag, and that's why people get so touchy about its treatment.

The flag not touching the ground is an American concept. In most other countries, the flag will dip/vail as a sign of respect.

1 2 3 4

Its the thought that counts.

I don't know the details surrounding the ceremony, but looking at the photo it's possible the ground/feet thing was an impromptu decision -- it's pissing with rain and appears to be a howling gale (judging by the direction of everyone's clothes), and a flag that size might turn into a parachute!

Oh dude like.. common.. they are doing this in the most respectful manner, they weren't thinking

Hey! Lets have our soldiers surround the American flag to show support for 9/11 but.. lets have in on the ground to disrespect them a bit.

They are showing you a huge amount of respect (show me pictures of all the other nations that did this) and you just have to find something negative about it.

but I'll still give them a nod of respect.

Oh please..

My first thought was "get the damned colors off the deck!"

I'm a US Army veteran and this doesn't bother me in the slightest. It's perfectly OK because they're not American and don't have the same expectations for how they treat the flag. It's no more disrespectful than it would be if we performed a similar display of the French flag in front of One World Trade or the White House.

This is truly one of those situations where the phrase, "It's the thought that counts" applies.

Calm the hell down people.

Vermont Stands with the country of our founders. Stay strong France

USA should do the same with the French flag in front of the One World Trade Center.

That'd be a powerful message.

They ARE our oldest friends. We love them dearly. The aid they gave us in 1778, was crucial for us to gain independence from the British. We would not be around if not for our French friends. Today's events are truly a tragedy

Get your panties untwisted.

It's just a damn flag anyway. It's clear the french were trying to be nice.

Fair enough. Not a good time to be debating this.

Aujourd'hui, nous sommes tous les Parisiens.

I hope we do all the pomp and ceremony in showing our support for France, but also real, hard-hitting assistance as well. Use my tax money to send them aid--in the form of care, military, or rebuilding--in order to help them overcome this trial. Stay strong France, we are with you!

When 9/11 happened my parents were stranded in Italy so then traveled up to France. In both places they saw US flags in the windows of homes. However insignificant this would be, I intend to return the favor.

Historically, France may be America's "greatest ally". They aided Americans during the Revolutionary War and donated the Statue of Liberty, among other less significant contributions.
