It blows my mind how small Europe is. I drive 100 miles a day for work and I don't even leave the state, let alone country.

Edit: to drive from corner to corner of my state it is approximately 650 miles and would take 10 1/2 hours.

You drive 100 miles a day for work? Cheese's crust why not just move at that point

He probably means a total of 100 miles, 50 miles each way. That's not all that uncommon where I grew up.

Yep, I have a 50 mile one-way drive too. Luckily I don't have to go in every day.

And it also takes 50 minutes one way. 50 miles in 50 minutes is much better for my mental state than 10 miles in 50 minutes (AKA Los Angeles).

Although you'll spend a fair amount on fuel.. Although I hear it's cheaper in the US

Gas prices just dropped but still,if you're driving 100 miles roundtrip, you're spending a significant amount of money on gas.

Ridiculously cheap compared to Europe,I was in the US over the summer and it was about 1.40 GBP for 4 litres of fuel. I was gobsmacked.

You'd spend about the same on fuel in either case. Stop and go is killer on mpg.

Fuel is cheaper. I remember when I went to England I was like holy shit look how cheap the gas is!! Then I realized it was in liters, not gallons.

It varies, more rural areas it's cheaper, and better, fuel. The closer to major oil states such as North Dakota and Texas also help. Finally their the states with deep taxes like California were it tends to be more expensive

[–]william_fontaine 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yeah, I pay about $120 a month for gas. The wear and tear also adds up over time.

Same here. But I live in Sweden so its a pretty big country with good roads.

Still pretty terrible if you ask me

I've had projects at work that required my to drive 300+ miles per day. It lasted about 6 months. At the time I was using a company vehicle and they paid for gas, I use my personal one now and charge mileage.

Dat mileage doe.

Friend of mine is doing that right now. Drives a Prius that's a couple years old. Mileage alone at this point has paid off the car and he's banking it now to have a sizable down payment for a new car once the project is over.

This... I knew a guy who bought a Prius and was paying the payments with just the mileage money... Yea it sucks to have the high mileage but if you maintain your care good enough it should not be an issue.

I wish I got paid mileage. I get a $750 vehicle allowance plus fuel paid for. At ~4000km a month I would make out like a bandit. Our company rate is 79¢ per km right now I think.

I only drive 20 miles each way, so 40 total, for work... but it boils down to cost of living and ideal situation. If i lived near my work I wouldn't have a yard for my dogs, a shop for my motorcycles and painting equipment etc...

20 miles isn't bad. I drive about 20 to work, takes me about 30 minutes, an hour to get home if it's summer and I'm fighting shore traffic(heading home happens to be the same direction as people going to the beach).

He still probably has a faster commute to work than I do. I live less than 7 miles from work, and my commute is typically 45 minutes to an hour. Given OP's assumed location, much of his commute is likely spent going 80mph. Going that fast, a 50 mile trip takes about 35 minutes, which is not bad at all.

Bike it. You should get there in 20 minutes...

Not really. The Distance increases because I take the interstate to work, which cuts diagonally across the grid streets. I'd have to go straight south then go east, whereas taking the interstate just goes straight in the direction of work.

California or New York?

That's really not that surprising, depending on where you live.

I drive roughly 70. Which is only just over a half hour drive.

70 miles in 30 minutes? You would have to drive 140 miles an hour. Unless it's 35 miles and 30 minutes one way?

35 miles each way. 70 miles total. It's a half hour drive, but it's 70 miles each day. It's a little over an hour total driving each day.

My dad drives 80 km each way to work which in rush hour traffic can take up to 2 hours. He didn't move because we were still in high school when he got the job and he didn't want to uproot us. He hasn't moved yet because my mom still works in town and we have her parents living in our basement apartment. People have their reasons for their insane commutes.

Up voted for the use of "cheese crust".

Europe isn't small, some countries in Europe are. The size of the continent Europe is bigger than the US is in sq/km. You can drive pretty far in France or Germany without leaving the country. But Europe also has places like Luxemburg or the Netherlands which only take a few hours at most to cross like some states in the US.

Pennsylvania!

I just did a drive from mid Michigan to outside of Philadelphia and back to pick up a car. I have only been happy to see the welcome to Ohio sign once in my life and that was after a 6.5 hr drive through Pennsylvania. I hate Ohio, but fuck everything that is Pennsylvania.

In Switzerland, if you drive 100 miles, there are good chances you end up in another country.

Drove 3 the other day from home and didn't realize I passed the border to France.

There are Europeans who drive 100miles a day for work and don't leave their state either, they just aren't as common probably.

Consultant here who is normally all over Europe - Got a project atm 80 miles one way from my home so I am choosing to stay at home... 3 hours total traveltime and I dont leave my state. German Autobahn and sometimes a 155mph capable rental helps cutting that time though.

If you can actually drive 250kmh on the autobahn you must be driving outside of main traffic times

Just as I said I am a consultant so before rush hour and after rush hour (6-8 in the morning and 8-10 in the evening) and I drive the latter 60% of the trip against the rush hour direction.

Your state seems just like Finland.

Shit. I do 94 miles when my wife can't pick up the kids and I don't even leave my county. But I'm literally going from the North end of the county to the South end and then half back... twice.

You are awake Europe has a larger area than the USA, right?

Passing through two countries does not make an entire continent small, it makes the countries small or it just means you live near the border. Also depends on your direction.

If I travel 100miles west right now I will enter a different country, if I travel 400 mile south I will still be in my own country.

[–]Reijm 0

I walk to work in about 20-30 minutes. probably only a few miles.
