Shouldn't we be doing that for every society then? Or do we arbitrarily choose to only help those that are in close proximity to us?

What is the basis for our decision? Is it morality? National security?

I'd argue that if morality is the motive then it's hard to justify wanting to help Mexico and leave the people in Syria unaided, or the people in Africa, or close to 90% of the world's population that currently lives in conditions far worse then what we experience in the U.S.

If it's about national security then sure helping them sustain livable societies may motivate less people to come to the U.S., but it's undeniable that people will still want to come here. You have people from first world countries immigrating to the U.S. all the time, because it still holds amazing opportunity for upward mobility.

If say national security was our goal, wouldn't it still be futile if we do nothing to secure the border? Sure there will be people who won't want to come to the U.S. There might be others who will still want to and will take the legal approach. But there will be and will always be those who will want to come illegally. They have varying degrees of motivation and all of them aren't just about "access to the American dream".

I know netflix is popular here on reddit, and so is the show Narcos. It's an example of the kind of society you allow to exist when you do not secure your border. People with bad intentions will come here to profit off of you. Using drugs, weapons... you name it. We see it with the Mexican cartel today. We see it with the growing gang problems in cities like LA. We have entire TV series' dedicated to the tumultuous demise of society caused by these people.

So let's not pretend that if we just help Mexico, it will keep the bad people out.

The only way to keep the bad people out, is to secure the border, uphold immigration laws & motivate a society that believes in justice & law, instead of ambivalence & laissez faire.

The most moral thing the U.S. should be doing is protecting the citizens of the U.S. They should be providing ample opportunities for the Americans that are here. They should be providing advantages to those who positively affect society, to those that produce, provide & prosper.

I'm ok with being a little selfish on our morality scale. It's time that we start making sure our own are taken care of, maybe when we have that figured out, then we can start helping others. But let's not pretend we don't have domestic problems here, and let's stop letting them fall by the way side so that we can stand up for those that would never stand up for us.
