Actually, Japan is hailed as one of the most accommodating countries in the world for non-native speakers of the language. It's a great place to be for any number of reasons for any amount of time. I loved every minute of the 2 years I spent there, and I actually avoiding visiting home as much as possible. As for being called Japanese, the don't really mind, they use the term 日本人(Nihonjin: "Japanese person") all the time, and most are big on intercultural exchange. So as long as you're not a complete ass, they are pretty tolerant and patient in regards to everything. They may even laugh at about 80% of what you say in order tor to come off as more friendly, or they actually find your humor...well, humorous.

I mean. you can, but people will just respond with "Sugoi!" Japanese people rarely talk about anything super personal or important. That's why Japanese conversation is easy to pick up on, becuase most conversations are meaningless. Most people can be incredibly cold. Breaking down the trust barrier is super hard. It takes a lot of time and patience. And japs believe almost anything they hear in regards to hearsay. I had a girl I was interested in, she came to visit my university about 3 years ago. Anyways, one of the other people in my inner circle, a guy, was super jealous of our relationship at that point and lied to her and said I was bragging about how I fucked her to everyone. Without even discussing it with me, or anything, she cuts me off and still to this day has not spoken a word to me. It sucks, i didn't even get to explain myself. I even tracked the guy who lied down and get in his face and threatened him and he apologized and everything, he even tried to make it right by admitting it was a lie, and she still associated me with someone who lies. So in short, it's pretty easy to tarnish your reputation with anyone, even if you're innocent. Not a very easy question to answer. There's a lot of fickleness in japanese poeple. Curious about this.. I'm a master's student in a graduate program for ESL (or TESOL). Japan is no where near the top but it is OK my list of places to live abroad and teach.

Cant say I have. In my 2 years I frequented Ing, a rock n roll bar. The owner there, Hako-san, was a bad ass. Dude always acted like he was jacked up on coke, but he was just chill. Has the biggest legit music colleciton you can think of. And has several pics of him with other famous international artists that hailed around the late 60's and 70's and what not. Apparently he's been in bars his whole life working. The other place I went to a lot was a reggae bar and they had an older dude with dreads come in a lot and he claimed he was actually bob marley and the japs would buy into it but not get too excited about it becuase they know jack shit about marly.

I also played the bass at a jazz lounge bar on the weekends with a band.
