Not the being shot part, but wouldn't someone in any country know better than to just try and throw some stranger's door open? Whether it's their car or their house or their girlfriend's bathroom?

Normally I'd advocate a knock yes but in this situation you'd be knocking on the engine compartment and not even be in sight for the driver.

I don't know if you can count on it that a driver who goes around with the box up to see you. Or perhaps the adrenaline blurred his ability to nuance.
