Women have a uterus. Men don't. What that means is that 80,000 years ago, which the time your DNA thinks we live in, women control the population far more than men. The death of one woman meant a more severe population loss than the deaths of 50 men. Because of this, women have intrinsic value and men have only extrinsic value. Women earn their keep for the tribe by bringing babies. Men earn their keep by doing labor and taking risk.

Because she's intrinsically valuable, you will value her unconditionally. She has that value. You however, are intrinsically dog shit. You bring value to the table only in terms of what you can provide for the women of the tribe. The tribe didn't evolve to value you as a person. You didn't evolve to value you as a person. She didn't evolve to value you as a person. Men are instruments and so women love them instrumentally.

Look to praying mantises for an analogy. The male lets the female eat him after sex. Why would he do that? He does that because it'd make no sense for him to develop a sense of self-preservation that extends passed when his genes are passed. A praying mantis that gives his mate those extra calories has a much higher chance of passing his traits then one who escapes and lives a long happy life.

Same thing with us. We impregnate women and then give our lives if necessary to protect them. Nature had to give us a reason to do this so we fall in love, love the woman for herself, and are willing to stand out in front of our shelter with a spear so that we can give our lives fighting a lion to give her more time to escape out the back with her uterus or her kids. Moreover, if we get injured and she loves us for us then we won't be able to get food for her and she will die with our baby. If she nexts us in our time of need, traits get passed. Women evolved to be solipsistic and ready to leave us for dead at any moment if necessary.

There are multiple levels of evolution here, what women can do to generally ensure the population of the tribe and what men and women can do to support the existence of their own child. The answer in both cases is for the male's needs to be left behind and for him to be disposable while the woman acts solipsistically for herself and her baby.
