I adopted some feral cats. They become less aggressive after they are spayed/neutered and have a regular source of food. It's okay if only a minority could be adopted -- at least trying to provide this opportunity would go a long way.
The bare minimum that should be done is providing spaying/neutering free of charge, for all cats. Trap-neuter-release is effective at controlling populations.
Poisoning and shooting them is just cowardice. Humans introduced them at this environment, we have responsibility towards them.

They kill 75 MILLION native animals on a nightly basis.
Your "warm-hearted solution" is the extinction of an entire ecosystem. Cats aren't special. The fact you are a cat person doesn't change the reality that they can be just as detrimental as a rat infestation if left unchecked.
They are killing EVERYTHING. Not just the animals but the plants too.

That I'm a cat person is entirely irrelevant. We introduced them to this environment, we are to blame, we alone. Exterminating them is a coward thing to do and doesn't address the underlying problem - people are not spaying and neutering their pets.
That is the horrible thing, we are introducing more cats to the environment, all while we kill them in large numbers.
If this is a priority, Australia should provide spaying/neutering free of charge, in the whole country.

The underlying problem is that these feral cats are threatening and destroying a delicate ecosystem, killing native species in a place where they do not belong. Saying that they should be adopted instead of killed sounds noble but it will never happen, there are too many. I agree that people should spray/neuter their pets but introducing free spraying and neutering does not solve the existing problem. I agree that we humans made this problem and should solve it by removing the cats from the ecosystem. The only realistic way to go about this is killing them. I know it is sad, I know it is not ideal and I know it should not have had to happen in the first place, but the problem is already here and should be stopped. The problem is not that these poor cats do not have a home, it is that they are killing off birds and mammals at a huge rate. This is the first priority.

Did you read my post? I did address the source, people should neuter and spray their cats. However, spraying and neutering the cats will not somehow suddenly protect the ecosystem, so the cats should be removed as well.

Once you have an established feral population you can get 100% of pet owners to neuter their animals and it won't make a bit of difference. These aren't escaped pets. They're ancestors were but they're breeding just fine on their own in the wild.

The RSPCA doesn't recommend TNR except in very controlled conditions which don't apply to most of Australia and we have a bigger responsibility to save the endangered native species being killed by cats (both feral and domestic). A state government report in South Australia has suggested mandatory neutering for all cats.

The report is a couple of days old. It gets tabled, discussed by parliamentarians and the media, community consultation, etc.
South Australia is just one state however.
