I was expecting this one

What a face, the slit eyes, trying to look at him when he came in and then, trying to smile but ending up in a grimace.

Oh man when it panned to 2nd dog I lost it.

I only watched it because your comment. So fitting. I do the same thing to my dog, but I don't use a kennel anymore. She has a time out on my bed by telling her to go to bed. I think signs of guilt are universal from species to species. My dog does the same thing as well with the avoiding eye contact, and wagging her tail.

At least with mammals, absolutely!! We have co-evolved, and mammalian facial expressions absolutely are shared, especially with dogs and cats and other domesticated mammals! Which is why it's much more easy to create an emotional bond with a cat than with, say, a snake. Ain't nothing shared facially with a snake. Unless you're Voldemort.

I kennel my dog and he doesn't like but I am not going to trust this little Terrier running rampant around when I am not home. Because he doesn't like it already I don't use it for his time outs. So, when I was potty training him and letting him know it was bad he peed inside I tied him up right beside where he peed and made him watch me use the carpet spray to clean up his mess - when you have no place for a time out you have to be creative.

I always like to think of this video as Woody Harrelson's audition tape for Marley and Me

[–]legion_of_discord 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

It slightly bothers me that the kennel is used as a punishment, having "crate trained" a few dogs it's supposed to be their safe place that they don't mind being, not as a punishment. But for all I know this guy keeps his dogs out of the kennel 99% of the time.

Serious - pointing is a sign of advanced cognition. I know that pointers adopt a pose - but that's a bit different than what this dog did. Get him into AP courses!!

http://www.amazon.com/Pointing-Where-Language-Culture-Cognition/dp/0415650895

Huh... One of my dogs points. I ask her were her food ball is and if she is feeling a bit lazy she just points to it. I should really give her more credit.

You can't just give credit. She's going to have to do well on the AP test to EARN those credits.

We don't know how these dogs are trained. A dog can be trained to lift its paw towards an object, but not know why it's doing that. Maybe the dog went to shake hands/paws with someone, and instead accidentally pointed at the other dog and got praised, or got a treat. When it gets talked to in that tone and it points its paw at the other dog, it gets rewarded.

In this case it would be "pointing", but wouldn't be doing any of the cognitive aspects of pointing. We need to be careful not to ascribe meaning towards an action because that's why a human would have done it.

That dog knows exactly what it's doing. In fact, it probably framed the smaller dog too.

So if the dog is capable of this, is he capable of murder and framing?

Framing can be pretty hard. Getting all 4 sides cut perfectly so there's no gaps is really difficult.

I dunno about murder, but I'm pretty sure I paid that dog $300 one time and he made me the most gorgeous handcrafted picture frame you've ever seen.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was cat. It of course is not seen in the gif, because - cat.

Never forget folks - Beware of the dog, but the cat is shady as fuck!.

This is interesting because if you true, you'd essentially be reinforcing the behavior of framing the other dog.

I hate to be 'that guy' but I very much doubt the dog was intentionally 'pointing', still very cute nonetheless.

Actually, i'm inclined to agree with paques1966 here. Dogs inherently understand pointing gestures made by humans, so it wouldn't be too hard to believe that dogs can make the same gesture.

I would like to hear a dog's opinion on this matter before I can decide if I agree or not.

My dog never understood pointing gestures. I'd try to point at something to get him to look at it, but he'd just stare at my finger instead.

[–]It_is_pitch_black___ 41ポイント42ポイント  (5子コメント)

Hate to say it but, like with humans, some are just slow. Real slow.

True, I once had a very stupid (Yet gentle) dog, she never listens to anything

You have to point and glance at what you're pointing at. They pick up on our visual cues a bit easier.

And here we go on the personification of a pet...

They understand our pointing, but that doesn't mean they can comprehend modeling that signal themselves.

This looks like the dog just felt his owner was displeased and tried to "Shake" to appease him -- that's what my dog does. Whenever he does something bad and I use the "you're in trouble" tone of voice, he flattens his ears and just starts attempting to "Shake" desperately

Dogs inherently understand pointing gestures made by humans

Are you sure about this? Because I've definately read/heard (no source though) that although it seems like they understand pointing, really they're just following your hand (in case it's got food or some other treat in it).

They said on QI that dogs are the only animals who will actually go to where you point instead of looking at your finger (not even apes can do it). However, it isn't THAT strange, when you realize dogs are also the only animals we have been breeding for a very long time to do exactly those kinds of things.

My dog never sees the stick when I throw it. He waits for me to point where I threw it.

Maybe your dog doesn't like fetch? He just feels obliged to get it once you've pointed at it. In his head he's all reddity, "urgh, owner, stop trying to make fetch happen".

That's kind of the point though, they know you're motioning for a reason. I watched a Nova special once on dog intelligence and they set up a test for both dogs and a group of monkeys where they would point to indicate what was supposed to be done, the dogs took the human's suggestions and the monkeys ignored them. I don't remember what it was called, it's on Netflix.

It was probably titled 'Monkey see, monkey do...n't give a shit'

So you are saying that they 1) Do not understand pointing and 2) Are just following your hand with their own, also known as, pointing.

http://www.researchgate.net/profile/Adam_Miklosi/publication/11438102_Dogs'_(_Canis_familaris_)_responsiveness_to_human_pointing_gestures/links/0046351965af1ef841000000.pdf

So yes, dogs do "follow" our hands, but they are one of the few animals to understand following the line your finger creates. Most animals can't understand that any sort of hand gesture extends anywhere past the hands, and think an extended finger is nothing. Since dogs evolved alongside us, they understand that a pointed finger means there is something over there we want them to look at.

Whether or not this dog was "pointing" at the other dog or simply raising his hand to shake to say "look at me, I'm a good boy!" Is up for debate though.

Following your hand is understanding pointing!... if they don't understand the gesture, they don't know to follow it.

Cats can't do it. Dogs are clearly smarter.

while I do believe that dogs are smarter than cats, this might be more easily attributed to dogs being with humans for so long that they understand a lot of human emotions and gestures.

My cats understand hand gestures in particular directions, but would only follow it if they were already looking to ask which direction to go. Pretty sure it's different to understanding pointing with a finger. My cats see the direction my hand moves in, and understand it as a motion in that particular direction. If I just had my finger pointing in a direction, I doubt they'd follow it.

Mine definitely looks where you are pointing to not bc it thinks there's food in your hand. She can be standing several feet away from my hand and will look at what I point to without coming closer to see if I have food. Sometimes I'm pointing at other people/animals that she likes. She can respond without food being involved. From her perspective, if I point at somewhere I'm trying to show her something interesting.

I saw the recent TIL post that stated dogs and humans are the only animals to understand pointing, my first thought was "My cats understand my hand gestures! But that's probably different to pointing." I gesture my hand in the direction of where I want them to walk, and they'll follow the command. (they'll follow it if they were looking at me for direction) Definitely to do with the motion of my hand in a particular direction, never figured they'd follow a pointing finger. They're not just following it for treats, though.

In what way would there be any deeper understanding to pointing than "follow your hand"? That's what what pointing is, you mentally create a line from your hand, and dogs understand that. A quick search on google scholar will give plenty of sources.

Inherently? No. I've pointed to things for all my dogs. Out of the 15 or so dogs I've had/known well, only one understood pointing and it took only a tiny bit of training. That was the smartest dog I've ever met, but it didn't inherently understand pointing. The rest would look at the end of my finger when I pointed.

Dog and cat owner here. I can confirm. Dogs are fucking smart. They understand things being pointed out. My cat does not. Has a hard time finding food when its held in front of his face

gotta agree here, might just casually lift its foot as it's unsure what to do in the situation. I think we tend to give things more meaning than it actually has.

I taught my dog to 'shake' and now if he is ever in a situation where he feels nervous or in trouble he will sometimes do the 'shake' motion without me commanding it. I think it's just a way for them trying to be a 'good dog' in attempt to escape the hostility. I don't know that for a fact for I ain't no Cesar Millan.

This is why the first things I train my dogs are sit, down, and over. I had taught my first dog shake first, she pawed at anything she wanted. Whenever one of them thinks they're in trouble they just roll over. Works amazingly.

Edit: A letter and a word.

Sometimes when my dog got really excited it would go through half its tricks and sit, down, over really quickly. That was hilarious.

My dog does this when she is really excited. First she runs in circles a few times really quickly, then she does the sit, down, rollover part, then she does this weird galloping in place thing where she jumps off her back legs, lands on her front, and repeats that a few times, then she sits and lifts her paw up. So strange.

One of my dogs does this too! She also does it when she meets new people. I think she just desperately wants everyone to like her and she knows it makes us happy when she shakes.

Same. My dog just starts giving out high fives to everyone. Now, he'll even jump and throw high fives right at your face. Such a bro cockapoo...

When we're teaching our dog a new trick he will go through all the tricks he already knows trying to get the treat. Eventually he'll do what you're asking but first it's shake, high five, roll over, etc.

Actually like the knights of medieval times this dog is so smart he is actively checking your sleeve for weapons upon his greeting. Dogs are way smarter than people give them credit for.

Did he kick that dog?

You would too if the dog bites you as a reaction.

This is one of the episodes where he didn't understand what the dog wanted to say/show. I still think most of the things he does are good and help the owners and the dog.

But there are negative comments on every dog trainer, so well...

His training method works fantastic for TV because it shows instant results but produces a really negative behaviors long term. Definitely hop on over to r/dogtraining and you'll find quite a few articles as to why Cesar Milan's style is not respected by dog trainers or the scientific community.

It was a pretty light kicking motion, especially considering the severity of the situation. I hate to say it, but this particular episode looks pretty staged. He came away with no permanent damage to his wrist, damage which that dog is perfectly of incurring. The dog is trained to do that. Bet he's moonlighting as a police dog trained to conduct attack training, e.g. attack without hurting. The insurance for that show would be through the roof if they had to insure the maming of Cesar.

[–]PM_ME_UR_PETITE_ASS 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Would you not do the same in that situation?

Pointing in this situation was probably more submissive. Ears back, tail wagging in more of a flicking way and the lifted paw are all submissive signs a dog gives off.

I bet you love to be 'that guy'

Well this guy on reddit "doubts" it. Case closed! He even has 29,000 karma to back it up.

Especially from a mastiff...

My mastiff growing up used to 'lose' the ball we were playing with when it rolled under him. And he wasn't exactly the dumbest mastiff I've ever met.

Indeed, probably just offering a paw. When my dog gets told off, or does something he was told not to, he will offer a paw in-attempt to grovel or try to prevent getting told off.
