Vietnam War rape victims demand S. Korea apology

Asia

A US organization dedicated to raising awareness about the rape of Vietnamese women by South Korean troops during the Vietnam War is calling for an apology from the South Korean President. President Park Geun-hye is currently on a visit to the United States.

The group, Voices of Vietnam, held a news conference in Washington on Thursday. One of the leaders said thousands of Vietnamese women were sexually assaulted by South Korean troops during the Vietnam War.

Four survivors took part in the news conference via a live video-teleconference call from Vietnam.

One of them, a 60-year old woman, said she and her mother were sexually assaulted at their family-run store by South Korean troops.

The group took out an ad on Thursday's edition of the Wall Street Journal calling on President Park to apologize to the victims.

The South Korean government has not issued an official response.
