[serious] What constitutes a mass shooting? (self.ShitAmericansSay)

You might have seen me on this sub, talking about American paramilitarism, the school-to-prison pipeline, all kinds of stuff.

Something was brought to my attention, when I was citing FBI NCS reports - the FBI does not consider 4 people shot to be a mass shooting.

Now, obviously, the only number that is completely illogical, is one person - it directly contradicts the adjective "mass".

Where uncertainty sets in is after that. Why not two? Or three?

Where should the line be drawn, and where is it generally drawn by governmental authorities outside the US?

I'm gonna assume you're German based on your username. When Robert Steinhäuser shot like 15 people Erfurt, it was called an Amoklauf. Further, good ole dict.cc translates that as shooting spree, killing rampage, and spree killing.

As an aside, since the Amis have (at least recently) the market cornered on mass shootings, I suppose I should point out that the FBI does not have a standard definition for the term. OP, can you cite a place where they do use it? Usually they will not use ambiguous terms in official reports because of the politics involved.

amoklauf doesn't require shooting, you can start one with a car, a sword or a shovel.

when i tried to translate it i got 'massenerschießung' but this is more srebrenica than sandy hook.

some newspapers seem to have adopted the term 'massenschießerei' but this seems more like a literal translation and seems a bit ill-fitting because like 'massenschlägerei' it seems to imply the masses shooting instead of the masses being shot...

Amoklauf may not require shooting, sure, but when there was a mass shooting in Germany, that's the term that was used. My point was only that German, as a language, definitely has a way of expressing the idea. With a secondary point contradicting the snarky "we don't have a term [because that doesn't happen here]" by showing that it very much did happen here.

Still, that guy in Graz driving through the walking passage was also called an 'Amoklauf'. It's just 'going on a rampage', not a shooting spree per se

You're missing the point. Words can mean more than one thing. How to put this simply? Not all Amokläufe are shooting sprees, but all shooting sprees are Amokläufe. Again. German does have a term for this concept.

Doesn't matter for me if dead of injured.
