Welcome to the Payday 2 Crimefest MEGATHREAD! This post will act as a continually updated sticky post for the duration of the "Crimefest" event, and will contain all the details and information regarding the event. Feel free to discuss the event in the comments, just keep it on topic and relevant.

DAY 1: (UPDATE 5.3GB)

A new weapon UI and loadout design, and - new balancing for all weapons! The goal here is to make all weapons viable, and more comparable to each other in the classes. This includes removing the speed penalty from LMGs, showing decimal places for weapon damage, accuracy and stability on a 0-100 scale, and ammo pool refinements.

THE BLACK MARKET :

Introduction of 'Safes' - like TF2 crates, they are unlockable and contain items. At this stage, it appears to be only weapon skins, with different rarities. Like in TF2 / CSGO there are also different types of safes, and there is steam trading for them. You can purchase or trade "drills" - again, like TF2 keys - to open safes.

At this stage trading is only for the drills, safes and skins, and not for other items - though it will remain to be seen if that changes down the line. Certain skins will alter statistics of weapons that they are applied on. It is not confimed if using a skin on a weapon is permenent, however it likely is - so once you apply it to a weapon, be sure you don't change your mind!

There is also planned implementation Steam Workshop for weapon skins made by the community, with more information on that to follow.

Personally, I am expecting/waiting for someone to either;

  • create a hack to generate infinite funds and the casino for safe card drops
  • or a bot that runs jewelry store to generate safe card drops

Considering how broken open the game has been in the past by certain members of the community, OVERKILL, you may want to be wary about your in-game anti-hack measures.

Guess I'm one of the few people in the minority here:

I'm not worried. There have been a ton of weapon packs and when they all came out someone was always complaining about how it'd ruin the balance of the game. Now did some of them change the balance a bit? Sure they did. Did they ruin the game? Doesn't seem like it. Everyone always freaks out and then quietly mellows out when they realize it wasn't a bad thing.

Now is this one going to change a lot? Yes, it sure is. But we're also getting WEAPON REBALANCE. They're adding that too. Do you guys really think these two things were developed separately? I'm going to give Overkill the benefit of the doubt that things are going to feel different with both the weapon rebalance and this skins thing, and that it'll feel alright. Change is good.

Do I personally like the idea of paying for keys drills to open crates safes? No, not really at all. I usually buy the DLC packs when they go on sale because I don't like spending $7 on one new character. I understand Overkill needs money but I'm not made of money, and I play every now and then when I have the time. So chance are I probably won't buy these drills, unless there IS a way to unlock them in-game. I'm not going to get my hopes up though. To be honest most of the skins they showed look pretty meh to me, and I'd rather stick with GoonMod's weapon customization. Only reason I'd be interested in these skins from these safes is because then other people could see my skin, but that doesn't matter to me too much.

And finally, I couldn't give less of a crap about stats. I like my guns the way they are, and I'm sure with the rebalance I'll be able to find some good configurations and like them more. I'm not going to want any stat-modifications from skins, so there's less chance I'll pay money on them. If other people want to, go right ahead. My guns will be fine without them. Also I don't care about the balancing too much, because this isn't a PvP game. Yes if stat-modifying skins were introduced into a PvP game like say, CS:GO, it'd be a damn outrage. But In this game we're not playing against each other, we're playing against the a.i. This game is co-op. The only thing there is to worry about from people having more of an upper-hand is that either I get jealous that my gun isn't better than his, or the community gets an elitist attitude about people who don't have good skin stat-modifications. I think the second one is more likely than the first, but even then, this is all theory because we haven't seen everything play out yet.

TL;DR Everyone calm the hell down and play it cool. Overkill has made mistakes in the past but they've also done some cool shit with this game, so let's just wait and see how all the new stuff feels with an optimistic mind.

Ehh i don't think we should give them time, how many times in the past 2 years has overkill fucked with us and then insulted us for being ungrateful or something. They've given us cool shit, ehh again really i mean we're still missing content we were promised on release and for everything free they do they have like 2 dlc's and again they insulted the players numerous times. Most people would have learnt their lesson and if they truly care about the audience they wouldn't try to pull stuff like this so often. Will they fix it? Maybe. Is it as bad as it sounds? Worse (this was supposed to be free). Should we give them time? Hell no.

This game has 25 pieces of DLC. If one person has bought every piece plus the game, that's $130 of stuff - more, if they bought it before the price drops.

And now you want in on the cosmetic gravy train?!

You don't do this with a game that expensive. CSGO is $15, or half that on sale. You can buy 2 keys and still be a few cents under the price of one copy of PD2.

  • Paying for a skin: Yeah, that's fine. I don't mind. Looks a bit greedy, in my opinion, but why not? I'll tell you below.

  • Rebalanced Weapons: Yay!

  • Crate-drops on payday: Not that cool, but okay. If I have the option to trash them.

  • Stat-Boosts from those skins: That's fucking disgusting. Some DLCs already give you an advantage, but this is just stupid. It's also easily identifiable who has the disadvantage. Playing public could get interesting.

So, why not buy skins? That particular reward is just not free as promised. I can't acquire a skin without paying for it. I did not expect that. Give out skins as a regular old loot drop with extreme rarity - then it would not completely break the promise you made.

They even have a system already in place they could have used. Chances for different drop-types are already different.

Just make skin-drops in general rare (~1%) and then have infamous skins on top of that, for the extra fancy and extra rare stuff.

They would also generate some revenue from the steam economy and if they really feel like it, they could sell mods and skins seperately for cheap. You know... like TF2, which is usually praised for NOT being pay2win.

I feel like one of the biggest issues is that this actively makes the game a worse experience for those who don't want to participate. Therefore it truly isn't a free part of Crimefest like announced. The fact that they are showing off these limited edition skins goes to show they are trying to make players feel left out/inferior for not having skins. Hell, just look at a quote from the site:

"Earning a Legendary skin will attract admiration from friends, attention from foes and envy from all. Get it equipped, get onto the biggest heist and prove to everyone that this was no accident!"

First I saw we were getting a weapon rebalance and I was happy.

Then I saw Karate's better stats screen was added to the vanilla game and I was joyous.

Then I saw we were getting HQ third person weapon models and I was overjoyed.

Then I saw we were getting Goonmod's skins in vanilla and I was euphoric.

Then I saw we were getting P2W, randomly dropped stat increases and all of that immediately disappeared and all the joy was replaced by salt.

Why Overkill. Why would you make me so happy, make me raise this shield of distrust I had, then when I was at my most vulnerable you do this.

Unless the weapon rebalance messes up the top tier weapons then skin bonus won't really affect much. Some people already go through death wish with ease and their example was +4 stability. That won't affect much imo. I won't be buying any skins at all and this is coming from someone who has at least a cheap skin for every gun on CS:GO. Skins just seem dumb for payday.

I get excited, thinking this next update will be something cool that will get me playing the game again. Then I see this whole bullshit cash grab idea they got from CS:GO, only you get better stats if you pay.

I don't understand why this game has probably more than $100 USD worth of DLC and Overkill still feels the need to add cosmetic crates that still need keys to open them, but on top of that also gives STAT BOOSTS to those who pay, and will probably defend themselves saying that they're an "indie studio" that desperately needs the money. That being said, I'm still hyped for the weapon rebalance and DLC sales, and I'm very impressed that they were even able to implement such functionality even in the Diesel engine.

Overkill, the whole reason that CS:GO's system works is the fact that cosmetics don't give stat boosts. Even in a PvE game it's still unacceptable because what's to stop Overkill from making a difficulty past Deathwish that requires more insane stat boosts from skins? What's to stop Overkill from putting out a heist DLC, a weapon pack DLC, a character pack DLC, and a new set of crates in the same day?

That being said, I still think it'd probably be okay if we saw the benefits of microtransactions like this, that maybe are able to fund more free content for everyone without having to jump through a bunch of arbitrary hoops. I think removing the stat boosts would be fine for now, but Overkill really needs to rethink the way that they're monetizing this game, because by this point they've jumped the nuclear warhead.

My first reaction was to be mad and then I stopped to think on the skins changing stats for a little while. From the bit I see right now if they are only modifying stats like stability and concealment then I don't have a significant problem with this if they discount the DLC that is out there already to a more reasonable price. However if it ends up that reaching damage breakpoints requires skins to do so (even worse if it requires extremely rare skins) then this is horseshit and Overkill should know better.

Just to be clear, Tessio is a good friend, and he's not saying he's removing opinions, but that is more directed at the extremely prolifically rude, hatred and violent comments will be deleted.

Paid content during the 'free content' release we 'earned', stat bonuses on shit we -have- to buy directly from other players or be absurdly lucky to get, and a an almost complete inability to get the actual content ingame through just playing. And that's -on top of- all the paid DLC we're no doubt still getting and have already got.

I agree. It isn't a competitive game at all where that would be simply unacceptable, but the amount of small DLC's they're charging for is insane. Like, more DLC than EA's wet dream. My first impression is that skins that change stats is kinda dumb. The entire point of skins is to customize the look of your gun. If some skins have better stats then you'll have to use the better skins or use a suboptimal gun. That kind of defeats the point

But there is possibly a more insideous problem. What if you can have an insanely good gun, but only if you buy an insanely rare skin? CS:GO skins can go for $100+.

On one hand, if the stats are minor enough and the guns are balanced the right way, the stat differences might not matter. On the other hand, they might matter a lot.

We don't know yet, but I sure as hell don't trust Overkill or any developer with that type of power.

Does this suggest that Safes can only drop from the end of a heist, and not Offshore Payday? Additionally are there measures in place to make safes more likely to drop at the end of multi-day heists to discourage farming JS and UKJ ad infinitum for drops? Thanks for your time!

It would be one thing if it was just cosmetic but this is literally power creep that you have only a CHANCE of getting if you pay money. But like i said, they clearly said the content unlocked through the crimefest would be free. Sure, the weapon re balance was free, but the safes were the main thing we unlocked, yet they are trapped behind a paywall.
I feel like overkill is twisting there statemen. If this was something they added outside of crimefest, it would be less of a problem (although the whole 'skins giving stat boosts' thing is still BS.)
