Sigh. Are there seriously Muslims here who think voting is haram?

You're not living in a Shariah ordained country, so stop acting like only the Shariah law is the only law that exists. If that is the case you or your parents should never have immigrated here. If you live in non-Muslim countries, you're required to follow the laws of said country provided it doesn't interfere with your everyday religious duties. This is what Yasir Qadhi said in one of his Seerah videos.

Look at the story of the Muslims who migrated to Abyssinia during the time of the prophet (pbuh) if you think I'm making this up.

Back in summer here in Denmark, there was a huge discussion among Muslims about voting and such. One person was on TV and talked about how haram voting is and caused an outrage here. He, and some other factors ( the attack in February which split some Muslims and caused some controversial episodes) are, in my theory, the reason the right wing party sparked this election and gained second most seat.

Not even a surprise!

Muslims have always had a low voter turn out. This needs to change! If you're willing to go out and protest than you should be more than willing to go and vote. Muslim views and concerns about government are usually ignored because of the low voter turnout. WE LOSE OUR VOICE IN GOVERNMENT IF YOU DON'T VOTE. Too many people think that the election doesn't affect them as Muslims. As a matter of fact i think the election affects Muslims the most especially with the Xenophobic Conservative party.

Anyways check out this site it can be incredibly helpful!

Voted in the advanced polls. Didn't want to risk spacing out on the day.

Not sure who's down voting you and why people aren't up voting you.

He's getting down votes because many Muslims believe voting in a system of government where man made laws are passed is forbidden (haram). There are also those who say it is permitted utilizing the lesser of two evils argument.

Wouldn't it be haram for them to live in a democratic country?

Probably the Salafis. Couldn't care less about them as they aren't the brightest bunch lol.

Wants Muslims to vote then marginalizes a Muslim sect. Shame on you.

I am no one to judge someone else's belief that's only Allah domain.

Wait, so you don't believe Takfir is a concept in Islam?

Are you going to delete this comment too? Whats wrong? Not confident in your words?

No, the wording of my previous comment was far too accusatory-sounding and could have easily been misinterpreted despite my intentions of what it actually meant.

If even Reddit isn't safe from these idiots then no wonder the Muslim world is burning

Remember: Doesn't matter if you don't think a candidate perfectly represents your views. By becoming part of a voting demographic, you guarantee that in the future, candidates can't overlook the needs of your demographic. You want them to pander for your vote.

And if you're having trouble getting to a polling station and are in the West of Toronto area, PM me. No joke. I'll drive you. And I'll throw in a Timmy's to boot. Please vote.

Something a lot of people don't understand - candidates don't need to win citizens, they only need to win voting citizens. If Muslims don't show up to vote, then why should they care about what Muslims want?

There are almost 3 Million Muslims in the USA, and about 6.5 Million Jews in the USA. Yet, Jewish folk are so much more mobilized and coordinated than Muslims so their vote is crucial to candidates winning. If Muslims mobilized just as well, imagine what we could accomplish.

I wouldn't have said it was voting power that is the deciding factor though. The Jewish media lobby in America is powerful and there are a lot of Jewish people in positions of power within the media. American jews have a stronger voice in the public sphere than muslims.

This is because many Jewish people pursue more Law and Political degrees and jobs than the Muslims. Most Muslims are still 1st or 2nd generation, so they are establishing family wealth by pursuing MDs, Engineering degrees, or are small-business owners. It will be the next generation of Muslims that can get this influence, but we need to set it up for them.

I completely agree. American jews have had more time to set up families and progress. We'll have to see how American muslims progress in the next decade or so.

I think you have a typo. There must be more than 3 million Muslims in the us. Canada has ~1 million with 1/10 the population of the US.

LOL at the haram police downvote brigade coming in. The only thing they're doing is hurting Muslims in the west. Kinda ironic how both the Salafis and the Xenophobes here are trying their best to make sure Muslims don't become a part of Canadian Society and its Political System.

I am always baffled my some Western-Immigrant Muslims hatred of the West. Like why did you immigrate here and have children here?

    Freedom of religion.

    Freedom of movement.

    Freedom of speech.

    State funded welfare/social security.

    Fair wages with guaranteed pay.

Laws which don't discriminate based on race religion or Creed.

    Sense of security.

    Higher education for free/cheap.

    Etc. Etc.

Pretty much everything an Islamic government is supposed to provide. Like actually.

Isn't it terrible that many so-called Muslim countries fail to provide these basic rights for their inhabitants when they are mandated in our shariah?

And then they talk about the joys of moving to the Islamic nations, despite the violence and instability in the region, and the oppression of the Saudis. If you move to a democratic, secular society you should at least respect its rules if you wish to reap the benefits.

Not all salafis are like that. Stop with the Salafi bashing.

I really liked that Yaseer Qadhi article btw.

Shaykh Muhammad ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked about the ruling on elections, and he replied: I think that elections are obligatory; we should appoint the one who we think is good, because if the good people abstain, who will take their place? Evil people will take their place, or neutral people in whom there is neither good nor evil, but they follow everyone who makes noise. So we have no choice but to choose those who we think are fit.
