Serco are racists and xenophobes, anything less than a Bentley is an insult. How else will the world know that we are progressive unless we provide them 1000 thread count silk linen with imported caviar for our esteemed guest. We shall spare no expense for them even if it means harming our own citizens. Europe YES!

For more context that's a 6 hour round trip and about £100 petrol to get there and back. £3,000 isn't a fortune, but it's wrong to say it "had not cost the taxpayer any extra money". All this contractor's costs will indirectly be passed onto the taxpayer and this clearly cost at least 10x more than it could have.

What's more worrying is that we would never have found out about it if a random pub landlord hadn't asked the driver what was going on. During the government expenses scandal MPs were forced to pay back trivial sums like £40 for some DVDs, now we find out newly arrived asylum seekers are being chauffeured around in limousines at our expense.

Often it's cheaper to hire a limo for long distances than taxis, which is probably they did it here.

So, a limo is mostly used to transport teenagers on night outs. During the day, not many people want to hire it, but the car is still available (and the driver quite possibly). He's willing to take a very low price.

With regard to private jets, if you want to get a very large group of people long distance between two cities, chartering a jet can be cheaper than buying them all seats. Get 12 friends together for a holiday to France, and it could be cost effective to hire a little plane.
