In martial arts, we train ourselves to better, to be stronger, to overcome obstacles. In the few months that I have trained so far, I have broke barriers, shed tears, sweat and blood in the dojo. And I know deep down that I can face an opponent with confidence that I will win... And in martial arts, we are told that anyone can be an attacker. Yesterday I learnt that my attacker is a tube, and has a wooden handle, and took me down in a single move in one swift move resulting in a sprained ankle.

FUCK SKIPPING ROPES MAN. This is the most embarassing injury ever :( it was just a class warmup. :(

EDIT: HUH?? Someone gave me gold??? My humble thanks. Damn Someone on r/sg is feeling pretty generous. Saw someone got gilded yesterday too and the day before I think.

Hello dear Singaporeans. I will be coming to visit your city this Sunday for a total of 1 week. I'm coming for work purposes (conference) and my parents are tagging along. Are there any things you recommend for middle aged parents that isn't too expensive? They love walking and nature. I will only see them in the evening due to still work.

Are there any tours and tour companies you recommend? We had a 10 hour halt a few years ago where we rode the sjngapore tourism bus and it was great.

We're living near China town.

Ooooh what's a "Cherry Bar"?

Ave-san, please enlighten us!

[–]AveLuciferPeanut Butter Master Race 1

Cherry bar is a bar on AC/DC lane (Yes, they named a street after AC/DC) that plays rock music. Pretty good classic rock stuff. A bit light for me, but I really enjoyed the vibe. Musos in leather jackets everywhere. DJ actually plays from a crate of vinyl records. And $4.50 shots of jäger.

For nature walks, Botanic Gardens, Bukit Timah Hill (and nature reserve), the TreeTop Walk and other park connectors are all free of charge, along with the various reservoirs and parks all around.

Gardens by the Bay and Chek Jawa are other possibilities, but these require payment of some sort. Gardens by the Bay is free for the outdoors aspect, but the two domes require payment for entry; Chek Jawa itself is free, but you'll need to get to Pulau Ubin first, and probably hiring the bicycles to get around.

treetop walk is nice and deserted if you go at the right time. really nice to have absolutely no one in sight, if only for a while

Visit the Botanic Gardens.

[–]Probably_daydreaming2 egg 1 kosong 3

I would recommend sungei beloh, it's a mangrove and it's a really interesting place to visit if you want to go to a place with very little people to enjoy nature quietly, botanic gardens have quite a lot of people.

Oh sweet, thanks. I think I might have some credit there too.

duck tours is quite cool too.. for lazy aunties and uncles who wanna 'tour' the city area..

Normally I would suggest a trip on the Singapore Flyer for pictures and such, but with the haze its a pointless experience.

There are more than a few walking tours in Singapore that are worth doing. A few of them center on food and are very popular so book early. If you're staying in or around China town, you might book them in for a cooking lesson at Food Playground where they can learn to make some authentic Singaporean dishes. Its a few hours in the AC learning something fun and then you eat what you make.

Gardens by the Bay at night is a great place for a walk. With the haze it looks all misty and spooky so its even more fun.

What's ECAH? You can start with simple dishes in whatever cuisine you're interested in. I think Asian cuisine is quite complicated for total newbies, so you could start with simple ang moh stuff like pasta. You could start with cooking one day per week. And invite friends over, it's much more fun cooking in a group than alone!

[–]Ryuuki 0

No worries about cooking; I know how to cook, just not sure where to get cheap ingredients lol.

Ecah is r/eatcheapandhealthy

wet markets!

I've found that Fairprice actually sells stuff for a little cheaper (marginally - like 10% cheaper). Not sure about Sheng Shiong and the rest though.

I have no idea what ECAH is, but skip the rice, bread, pasta, and noodles, and stick to meat and vegetables. Start with stir frys with meat and veg you get from the wet market (preferably) or the grocery store and try out different combinations of meats/veg and spices till you figure out what you like.

Think of cooking as an ongoing experiment where you've got the parameters (rough quantities of ingredients, mise en place, etc) all worked out in your head but you don't need it to be perfect like say, you do when baking.

Don't be an idiot like me and think that it's ok to eat excessive quantities of fruit on top on veg and meat and wonder why you aren't losing weight.

[–]Ryuuki 0

Else if you're willing to go a distance more, can head to Jurong East wet market.

154A wet market lor. There's only one wet market over there what.

BBE market is somewhat decent. Sometimes the quality of their produce varies.

I wish I could help you with exact places to shop for groceries in but I'm not familiar with the area. It doesn't have to be a wet market anyway. You might find smaller mom-and-pop sized stalls like these that sell vegetables in older HDB estates where you can get your veg from as well.

[–]Ryuuki 0

I have a lot of those indian stores selling veggies. Perhaps I'll go there 😂 thank you!

Get down to the wet market, get some veggies and learn how to stir fry. Doesn't need a lot of oil, and its not complicated. A little veg stir fry with some brown rice is an amazing meal.

Curries are a great option as long as you don't use the coconut milk heavy ones. They involve a ton of vegetables and are very satisfying. Make a big batch, portion it and freeze them so you always have a quick, easy meal.

[–]Ryuuki 0

Curry can freeze-keep one?! TIL.

[–]SarahSeraphimMischievous Sarah :D 0

perhaps you can try counting calories. i started in May and it really helps, despite the fact i don't even eat healthily. It's just good to know approximately how much you eat everyday and over time it causes you to be more careful with calories and generally more disciplined.

I started with a very ambitious goal of 1.5k calories a day, but these days i find myself eating 1900-2100. Even if you overeat, just keep recording it like a diary. Lost 7 kilos from May to July, but now stuck at a plateau, i might actually have to start exercising to push it further (i didn't exercise at all except for walking during my work)

[–]LunyxxLocal NEET until Feb 2016 0

You can try cutting out beverages and snacks. Only had water for drinks and fruits for snacks for 2 weeks and lost a few kg.

[–]Ryuuki 0

I drinking non-sweetened tea a lot these days rather than coke and stuff. Got it.

Drink green tea since you're already into non sweetened tea. Boosts metabolism to burn off your extra nutrients, faster than you normally would. Keeps you hydrated in the mean time. Btw as part of lipolysis (burning off of fat), you use up a lot of water, so don't forget to stay hydrated. Green tea helps u kill 2 birds with one stone.

Another thing that's two-bird-one-stone is drinking a glass of cold water the moment you wake up. Shocks your body into waking up immediately rather than slowly creeping into it, boosting your metabolism for the day. Also, hydration.

And I lost weight by keeping off carbs, whilst not paying attention to how oily my food is (I don't know how bad is this, but it worked). I'll eat chicken chop but don't eat the fries. If I'm not full I'll top up with fruits and water/green tea, or I'll usually stick to just a bowl of Soup to fill me up. The first week is the hardest since your stomach capacity is still rather large but once you get used to this and your stomach shrinks then it gets easier, you naturally eat less too. Lost 2kg/month by doing this alone, no exercise.

Oh man I should go make myself a cup of green tea now... Die, fats, die!

[–]SarahSeraphimMischievous Sarah :D 0

Make some easy soups like carrot and potato soup. Potatoes, carrots with some pork bone and a cube of chicken stock in one pot will do the trick. I also add in a tomato to sweeten the soup and cause my SO adores tomatoes. You can make a pot, store the rest that you can't finish for the next day and have afternoon lunch settled.

Rice in rice cooker will take you around 15 minutes.

I usually find midweek tiring so soups and a few side dishes of veggies (like the one recommended by wombat) is quick and easy to prepare. Also less washing hee.

How much are you willing to spend a meal?

I try to make big batch cooking stuff like:

  • Soups. For example, watercress soup is real easy to make. 2 bunches of watercress like $0.90 per bunch, plus 2 packets of pork big bones/chicken bones at $1.80 a packet and salt/pepper. It will taste 'sweeter' if you add stuff like red dates/honey dates/goji berries but you don't really need them.
  • Chili. You can make a vegetarian option if you want to save on meat costs, since minced meat can be expensive. Just canned beans ($1.80-2.50 depending on brand and type. Phoon Huat actually sells the beans for pretty cheap) and a chili/fajita flavour packet ($2.50-3.00) with garlic, onions and fresh tomatoes (maybe like $1.50 a packet?). Chuck it in the pot for about 30-40 minutes till all the water reduces. Freezes well. I add some grated cheese on mine and heat up but not necessary.
  • As the rest have said, veggie stir-fries.
  • Or if I'm well and truly lazy, I just get some chicken legs, salt them and steam with ginger. If I'm impatient I just boil them in salted water and ginger. If you've got an oven you can just chuck them in for 30 minutes too.

Local food ingredients are cheap - dried wood ear fungus, mushrooms, broccoli (from China, not Australia), eggs, green veggies.

When eating out I tend to go for Chinese soups or cai png (no png/rice).

What type of food do you like to eat? I can give you more recipes if you like :) It's an ongoing experiment but once you've got the basic techniques down like stir-frying and stews you can literally cook up just about anything you like.

Why are they popular though?

Because people like happy endings.

They're like telenovelas basically. The same type of person likes them.

[–]AsyrolAtas As Fuck Ang Moh 2

so basically the same draw as north american soap operas?

[–]AveLuciferPeanut Butter Master Race 2

Same IQ requirement as well.

I guess so. Am only familiar with Sunset Beach and Dallas and.. yeah it's similar to those haha :)

Basically requires you to leave your brain at the door, turn off all cynicism and engage emotions to max. Very difficult for some people to do, very easy for others.

  • mostly extremely attractive looking main and supporting actors

  • somewhat creative plot (although some are generically similar across k drama)

  • soundtrack

note though, that not every show that people watch on the train is k drama. i'm seeing more people watch chinese drama as well

[–]AsyrolAtas As Fuck Ang Moh 0

ok, so what's the draw with Chinese drama - same thing?

[–]WhitePepsi24otokonoko is love, otokonoko is life -1ポイント0ポイント  (0子コメント)

i have no idea about that.. sorry

Because they have no taste. Like Ave said, it's a clear indicator for me to stay away from them.

Like the fucking furries.

[–]AveLuciferPeanut Butter Master Race 0

At least furries keep to themselves.

[–]NXMTtea in a bag or death -1

Because it's better than being strangled I suppose.

[–]AveLuciferPeanut Butter Master Race -1

At least I can have a wank and make being strangled fun.

r/asiandrama this sub is a little dead, but still has some old posts that recommend certain dramas

r/kdrama this sub I believe is active at the time of this posting

[–]AveLuciferPeanut Butter Master Race 0

Boo. Don't encourage this kind of crap.

[–]AsyrolAtas As Fuck Ang Moh 0

Thanks - it looks like they're pretty much soap operas - not really my thing.

No wonder productivity in this country is so low. People in this office constantly congregate around their cubicles to gossip for hours at a time, the phones of my colleagues' constantly ring off the hook with dolts on the line eager for more gossip. And here I am working my butt off for 11 hours a day making wages that would qualify for WorkFare.

Ugh.

[–]AveLuciferPeanut Butter Master Race 3

It's really sad that being at work for long hours is seen as sign of a good work ethic when people fuck off half the time. I'd rather work 8 solid hours than 10 slack hours. Are those minutes here and there you steal really worth the chance to have dinner with your family? Or beers after work?

[–]rainforest_runnerUrban Assassin 0ポイント1ポイント  (2子コメント)

6 hour work day, mate...it's the future. Why can't top management see that?

[–]AveLuciferPeanut Butter Master Race 0

If you can do 10 or 12 hours of work in 6? Go right the fuck ahead.

[–]rainforest_runnerUrban Assassin 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

That's what I kept trying to tell my bosses. :P

never like this culture where staying late means hard working, if you're efficient at your work and time management, you wouldn't have to stay late. work-life balance is key.

Because if u have noticed offices always have the sick culture of staying late = working hard too.

Or if u complete things too fast, they will give u more stuff to do. Some contracts that I have seen have jobs that overload people. Like in the past this place have 5 person working they cut to 2 or 3. Very sick right.

[–]NEWaterRepenting for voting PAP 0

Yeah. I'm on a temp contract and my work is never done even if I constantly shatter expectations and deadlines. But meanwhile the permanent staff are being no more useful than a refrigerator in the North Pole. As I write this, a land whale has been leaning against my cubicle and gossiping and giggling for the past 2 hours. It's 1130 now and we started work at 830.

[–]zhoufngeziest game of my life

so i've been in my school's computer lab for half a day already, and the com next to me is kinda spoilt (can't log in due to some network issues), so naturally people have been sitting down next to me and trying to log in (but to no avail).

there's those who try once, and those who try 4-5 times, get a 'welcome' screen, heave a sigh of relief, but in the end still failing :c

and there's me typing this out on reddit

wonderful

Whenever this happens to me, I will hide the keyboard and mouse behind the com. It's more distracting for me when they come and try and fail again and again and again.

[–]zhoufngeziest game of my life

sometimes they use the table to do work, so they'll put the keyboard and mouse behind the com as you mentioned, that doesnt stop ppl from bringing it back and trying again LOL

Then put your bag against the screen. Ppl will be scared to bother you so they usually won't ask. If they do then tell them it's spoilt. Better yet turn the monitor around too so they won't even bother asking you

I have a serious issue where I don't feel very full all the time. I could eat lunch at 12pm, then still feel like I haven't ate at about an hour later. The worse case is for dinner, where I would eat normally at around 5.30pm then would suddenly feel like I'm starving at around 8pm then another at 11pm.

I haven't gain weight at all, but this is worrying. It's like I can't feel full when I eat. Is there something I can do about it?

Is it possibile to get a low-fat and high protein meal at a Kopitiam for ~$5?

If there is an indian food stall you could get something lentil based. Or if there is a western food stall....get the steak and don't eat too much of the sides.

I would LOVE to know where you can get steak for ~$5.

I haven't been to a kopitiam in ages but I thought the western stalls in kopitiams are cheaper than shopping center outlets since they use lower quality cuts.

But, if you are interested, I cook at home a lot and I get my ribeyes from Tekka Market at CJ Low High Grade Beef stall. He sells NZ and AU beef and I get 3 ribeye steaks (~ 200g each) for about $17.
