Right now you have to trust the 5 largest miners, who together have more than 70% of the hash rate. And the top 4 Chinese pools have shown that they can get together and agree on common policies...

You also have to trust various software developers. And trust that any news about security risks will not be censored by your forum's admins. And trust that the big holders will not decide to dump all their holdings before your get to sell yours.

Malleability has been a widely known problem since the MtGOX collapse 20 months ago. Can you guess why the developers failed to fix it in all that time?

Are there other malleable details in the transactions besides the one you are exploiting (sign of r and/or k, is that correct), or is that the only remaining one?

I seem to remember that there was in some Gospel something about a needle through the eye of a camel, or something like that. Or was that a Buñuel movie?

It does not seem to be a very popular passage, though; I haven't seen it mentioned in many years...

Suppose you somehow control a largish amount of money (or a humongous amount, like Bill Gates). Someone like Steve Zilber (or Wences Casares) approaches you and demands that you should really invest some of that money, or some of your time, to support some silly enterprise that he is obviously fanatic about, but you know that is bullshit. How should you answer:

(a) "No thanks, but I don't think that it is interesting."

(b) "Oh, thank you, I will definiely look into it and call you back."

Before choosing the answer, consider how the person is likely to react in each case...

Is it possible that Theymos and his gang don't see how harmful their censorship is for bitcoin?

In that infamous leaked chat log, Theymos brags of having successfully steered the opinion of some other community by censoring their forum. I wonder what community was that. Censorship may work with the kind of readers that are now left in that /r/bitcoin; but the players who matter -- developers, CEOs, serious investors -- should be put off by it. How could an investor take bitcoin seriously, if he learns that it must be "protected" by censorship?

How could anyone trust the core developers, when they are seen condoning (if not promoting) forum censorship?

You should be more explicit: "Any opinion that is negative towards Paycoin Blockstream or their products, plans, actions, or staff, or any fact or argument that might lead other readers to acquire such opinions on their own, will be grounds for immediate and permanent ban."

Or they will do it themselves -- like Circle is doing already.

Ditto for Havelock: do they trade some "funds" too?

Some autoimmune degenerative disease, as the developers turn against themselves. Or maybe general organ failure due to obesity and cholesterol buildup in the protocol. Block rupture cannot be excluded either.

Or maybe from swallowing a hard fork, having mistaken it for a soft one.

[–]jstolfi 5ポイント6ポイント  (0子コメント)

As long as Blockstream "owns" the protocol and the default implementation, they can put in them any "improvement" that their products need (like CLTV, RBF, CPFP, two-way sidechain pegs) and block any changes that goes against their plans, or that is good for their competitors (like raising the size liimit).

Presumably they made sure that their would-be investors were aware of that unique advantage. And that explains why the defection of Gavin to BitcoinXT sent them into panic mode. Capisce?
