For high office, yes. But it's not like Jefferson or Adams were hurting for money either. Many peoole today start on city council and move up to state legislature or mayor and climb from there. It's ridiculous to characterize all people who follow a profession as not even human and scum to begin with but if you want to change it, do something. Don't just stand around and bitch.
