That cornerback is going to get abused during film

As he should. I don't think he's played a game this year that he hasn't had at least 2 penalties in.

He was a huge bust too. He was taken like 60 picks ahead of Russell Wilson lol

That's not really a good indicator of anything tbh, Brian Urlacher was picked 190 spots ahead of Tom Brady, that doesn't mean Urlacher was a shit pick.

True, it was a bad comparison on my part. Just an attempt to put into prospective how IMO it was a wasted pick

What you were implying was correct. It's not that he was a bad pick (even though he hasn't panned out.) Its that the Seahawks draft pick exceeded expectations. Most people thought he was an perfect fit for the Cowboys

How many 1st, 2nd, or 3rd picks ... do anything worth while? THere are exceptions, i understand. But by and large. Not much.

Chad Pennington was taken many picks ahead of Brady, too

I wouldn't consider him a bust at all. He's had unlucky injuries pretty much since he's been drafted, and hasnt performed as well as they'd like. But he's a quality starting corner in the NFL still.

Morris Claiborne, he was a first round draft pick a few years ago, very disappointing player. As a cowboys fan watching this makes me laugh. Classic Mo

As an LSU fan, what the hell happened to Mo? Guy was dominant in college.

He stopped playing against players that had 0 to little chance at the NFL and started playing vs the best of the best.

As an lsu fan and cowboys fan this makes me sad. Atleast one of my teams is enjoyable to watch this year.

Its no big deal its not like the CB was a first round pick and the WR was a seventh rounder.

And the WR was a QB in college.

And that college is only know for a shooting in the 70s by the government.

And he was going to be a firefighter in Cincinnati if he wasn't drafted

And you can make millions playing fantasy football.

those fires wouldn't have stood a chance

How does Bill Belichick keep getting these amazing players so late in the draft?

I honestly don't think it's evaluation, I think it's player development. For every late round pick he turns in to a stud, he picks up at least one washout from another team and turn him around (Ayers, Vrabel, Lewis, etc).

The truth is painfully simple: Bill simply knows more about football than any coach in the game. He gave an 800+word response to detail how he coaches young players to be situationally aware. He recently ruminated on the evolution of football from rugby. He pulled out a damn drop kick in the middle of a nothing game: a drop kick! Bill gets the most from "project" players because he knows how to focus their effort on the most important things. Then when it's time to pay them, he doesn't forget that just like he built up one player, he can build up his successor.

But let's not paint this whole picture with one stroke. Bill has had a hell of a time developing young WRs and CBs. Now that they've hit on Edelman and Butler, their immediate future looks rock solid.

Let's not pretend that him being the son of the best scout EVER in the NFL doesnt have something to do with it.

[–]Bronan_the_Brobarian 18ポイント19ポイント  (0子コメント)

Literally wrote the book on scouting

I hope the legacy continues with both of his two sons.

My favorite Belichick fact is that he played lacrosse in college... not even football.

He did play football too (and squash!). But he was a captain of the lacrosse team and not the football team.

Source: I go to his alma mater and he's pretty much a legend among the athletes here

TIL.

In 1956, Belichick joined the United States Naval Academy staff, where he served primarily as a scout for over 30 years. His book Football Scouting Methods (Ronald Press, 1962) became a standard, described by Charley Casserly as the best book on the subject he had read, and by Bleacher Report as the "Bible" of football scouting.

Don't forget Gronk, took a risk on an injury riddled player in the second round

Meanwhile nowadays my fantasy league takes turns trading him to the team I'm facing every week so he can obliterate me over and over

Wait - really?

That's hilarious, though not for you. What's the story there, everyone just hates you? Do you also shitpost on your fantasy league's board?

Well it's a work league and I made the awful mistake of calling Gronkowski "Belichick's illegal tube-necked Frankenstein creation" after a nasty week 1 stomping.

Being the salty fuck that I was (remind you Gronk got 27 fucking points that week, while my best TE at the time was Larry Fucking Donnell with his measly 2.1 points), they all began to collude against me in what started as one trade and has now grown into something terrible.

I figured they might forget about it after the week 4 bye for the Pats but that didn't happen, and luckily that meaty behemoth only scored 6.7 points this week. Anyway, the moral of the story is if you get violated by a freakish ape-man hybrid you should just shut up about it.

I don't even play fantasy league and that's the funniest shit I've heard in a while.

Don't forget their new RB Dion Lewis! Came out of nowhere when everyone was expecting their 3DRB to be James White or Brandon Bolden.

Where can I find this response?

https://twitter.com/BenVolin/status/651470799031959552

I believe this is the response he's referring to. This is not the evolution of football from rugby, but the detail about coaching rookies & young players to be situationally aware. It was in the wake of the batted ball in the end zone controversy from last week's Seahawks game.

Bill gets a lot of shit from the media types for being a smug jerk, but mostly because he won't take the bait on their soundbite fetching. It's well documented that when he's asked a good football question, he'll answer with something like this.

Belichick was asked how he teaches his players all of the NFL's arcane rules. He gave an 820-word response

Welker...

Was a damn good receiver in college. He got passed over in the draft because Texas Tech was still in Leach's Air Raid system offense. The idea was that the system made mediocre players look better than they were.

Welker is why Crabtree got picked up early. Crabtree is why Crabtree isn't doing as well as he could.

Wasn't drafted by the Patriots

I tend to believe he is either extremely gifted, or is looking for some sort of attribute the rest of them aren't, and coaching that specific attribute to perfection. There are so many examples of Belichick taking a no-name guy/late draft pick, and turning him into the perfect cog in the Patriot system.

Also, the fact that, unlike many other teams, Belichick is coach and GM certainly helps alot. He's not just handed players and told to make them work, he's picking the players he knows will work best for what they have. Hence why there is often a failure when they sign some big star and he comes over and sits on the bench. Chad Johnson comes to mind. People barely even know he played in NE, and he was a megastar in Cincinatti. Reggie Wayne (albiet old and somewhat ailing) was taken and dismissed. I just think Belichick has a really great idea of what works for NE, and unlike most other teams, it's not really based in what those players did for other organizations.

The Packers do the same thing. Pretty much their entire team is drafted and only 3 or so have played for other teams. It takes leadership and skill and that's why these teams are successful.

[–]password_is_uijocdns 12ポイント13ポイント  (1子コメント)

Before the season started at least, Julius Peppers was the only Packer who has ever played a single snap for another team. Very well could still be true but I didn't want to look up Packers roster transactions since then.

Let's not forget randy moss. Although having him on the line up I think worked beautifully for them. Defenses got scared and would double cover him and then bam Brady would throw to Welker or some one else. Then the defense would draw away from moss and that's when they would strike and throw it to moss.

Yes. Also, he makes a point of never asking someone to try and do something that they can't do. That it is insane to try and take someone that doesn't have a certain skill and make them try to become good at that. He prefers to maximize and utilize the skills a person has and leverage those best for his team.

Jules had the fastest 20 yard shuttle in that draft class. Bill saw this and gave him a chance as a slot guy. Turned out pretty well.

I think you've gotten close to the truth of it. I'm pretty sure Belichick finds people who are amazing at 1-2 things, and then grooms those special skills until he finds a way to unleash them on the league. Edelman had the fastest shuttle time in the combine his year but no one paid attention to it. Bellichick takes him and turns him into a slot receiver. Wilfork was a giant of a human being. Bellichick doesnt try to make him be anything besides a giant of a human being. Brady has stupid amounts of competitiveness and work ethic.

Bellichick sees the one or two things and allows players to grow into the skills they have instead of trying to turn them into what the league wants them to be

Trade down. Make lots of picks in lower rounds. It's a numbers game.

This is the real answer.

How does that work for the Browns

They get lots of high priority picks, not sure what you're saying.

I think he's saying the Browns also stockpile picks but then consistently fuck it up every year

One of his best friends says football is always on his mind, even when they went fishing together. I don't know if most coaches are like this but it seems like planning to win at football is his life no matter what he's doing.

It helps having one of the great QBs throwing the ball and willing to work with the receivers and run the offense. Whether it is deion branch or randy moss or welker or edelman or gronk or even dion lewis, brady is willing to adapt and works well with anyone. You can tell that he puts time and effort into everything including working with the receivers.

It also doesn't hurt that brady is willing to take far less money to attract and keep talent. Brady is the 21st highest paid QB in the league. Think about that. There are 20 QBs making more than Brady.

I don't believe time machines are against the NFL by-laws so no scandal or cheating allegations on this front.

neither are the laws of physics, but they still got brady a four game suspension

A combination of good talent scouting, looking for players to fit the system, and, most importantly by far imo, having a great system and an aggressive coaching style. Just as much as the players are amazing, he makes them look amazing by playing to their strengths and by being the most strategically diverse coach in the league.

He sacrifices his early round secondary draft picks for this late round gems. See Terrence Wheatley, Darius Butler, Ras-I Dowling, and Tavon Wilson

First, Selection bias. The last "good" WR the patriots drafted/developed was Deion Branch (who was drafted in 2002 or 2003). There have been countless misses at WR.

But to answer the question: It's basically quantity over quality....especially in low rounds.

Belichick basically views the draft as one big guessing game. Even the few top picks that seem pretty safe clowney or RGIII are not a sure thing in his mind. So every pick is tradeable for the right price...BB will happily trade a 1st rounder for a 2nd and third fourth or a 5th for 6th and 7th. More chances = more opportunities to find guys. While you see the patriots having "keenly" picked Malcolm Butler and Julian Edelman in the low rounds...I still remember the the 30 other DBs and WR they missed to get those two.

Second, Julian took 4-5 years to develop. Literally. He was drafted in 2009 and 29 years old. He was the #5 or 6 WR and KR for the first 4 years.

Not only that, but Edelman wasn't even invited to the NFL Combine.

not only that he was the 6th pick and Dallas traded to get him

He clearly cheated by misrepresenting the direction in which he intended to run...

Is that a rule?... Sorry, I play Rugby Union lol I don't know American Football rules

He's making a reference to how people always blame the patriots for cheating, when in reality they're just a great team with the best head coach and quarterback of all time.

It's been a thing since I started using the internet. People take timing capping games and then splicing them up for the masses and everyone appreciates them. They can develop cult like followings too.

Any NBA head that's been online since 2000 should know about Yinka Dare mixtapes.

Laker fans from back then know about LakeShow09 always putting it down, and LD2k who started posting Laker highlight mixtapes to ClubLakers.com back in 2003 and now is one of the social media community dudes for NBA 2k16. That dude was a pioneer in sports highlight mixtapes in the early 2000's. He'd start splicing in movies and monologues with the game footage. Shit was incredible. CaChookaMan has a huge following and posts tons of mixes to YouTube, gets his account banned and starts a new one again to post highlights of every game.

Seriously, these people can tag up whatever the shit they want. Otherwise we'd be watching some shitty ad on an NFL.com video posting.

"good html5 makers"? Are you kidding me? Just download Open Broadcast Software, set the source as the window playing an HD game stream. When something cool happens, wait for the replay to come up and hit 'record'. Anyone can do it and it takes absolutely no effort. It automatically spits out the clip into a folder and you go to gyfcat or imgur to upload it in html5 format. Saying "good html5 gif maker" is like saying "good air breather".

breaking ankles is a term used in sports for when you juke someone and they bite on it hard. It's alluding to saying that the defender tried to turn so fast to keep up that he broke his ankles in the effort. It's a joke and the saying is to embarrass the defender.
