Didn't you know even comparing any white person from anywhere in the world and any black person from anywhere in the world is racist? For any reason!

"Median income in black neighborhoods is down while it's up in white neighborhoods" clearly racist. Surely you see it.

"Jungle pygmies [who are often black people] typically don't wear the same clothes city dwellers [who are often white]" do." So very racist!!

In all seriousness though a lot of comedians have started to avoid going to universities to do comedy shows because people of a certain age group are unreasonably over sensitive and have no sense of humor.

Perhaps it's not that they are over sensitive or offended, but they feel like using race as a distinction in jokes and stories (even if it's not in a negative way) is still enforcing a sense of separation between the two.

Even saying "black people are cool" implies that there is a difference between the speaker and them. A lot of people would just like to see the "us & them" mentality go away, so we can have a bit more societal cohesion.

But then you have people complaining about "colorblindness". I can see where they are coming from (shouldn't ignore issues disproportionately affecting one race) but it also enforces division.

are we all talking about the same college aged people? they're all for the us and them mentality

Humor comes at the cost of someone else's pain, however that doesn't mean we can't take it in good fun like jokes should be taken.

are you responding to the wrong comment?

Perhaps it's not that they are over sensitive or offended, but they feel like using race as a distinction in jokes and stories (even if it's not in a negative way) is still enforcing a sense of separation between the two.

People who literally advocate for the idea of acknowledging and emphasising people's differences instead of ignoring them don't get to turn around and censor comedy (the last bastion of free speech, almost every time) because they don't like it

I don't know who or what you are referring to. I'm not from the U.S and don't know anyone who was went to college there.

I was giving a hypothetical.

[–]todiwan 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

It is considered a "microaggression" in some American colleges to say that you don't care about people's race, and that people should be judged for what they say and do instead of the colour of their skin.

That doesn't really apply to every single person in college though, does it?

I feel like you're making a complete non sequitur here. Are you telling me that I'm wrong because you know of some people who think differently from the people in my hypothetical situation? I genuinely don't understand your intention.

The idea of most equality movements today is that we should acknowledge and celebrate differences between ethnicities (that's important: Ethnicities, not Races! There's a difference!) - but not treat each other differently. Every gender, ethnicity and people with varying sexualities should be able to enjoy their own culture without being discriminated against.

[–]SmegmataTheFirst 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

I think treating differently with respect to the person's identity is actually ideal, so long as you're not treating one as superior and another as inferior. As an american who lived in Japan for a while, I definitely was thankful I was treated differently than a Japanese person. Less was expected of me in formal situations and I was able to make friends more easily precisely because I was treated differently but not as lesser.

[–]Jeanpuetz 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I think that's kinda what's meant with "acknowledgind differences". I know what you mean. Of course it's not really ideal to treat everyone equally - you have to seperate most sports between men and women, for example, because of physical limits. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that you shouldn't treat others as superior or as inferior.

I agree with that, but that's not what they go for. Not only do they focus on races and specifically skin-colour (obsession with the concept of "white-passing" and "privilege" that it gives someone), but they believe that differently "oppressed" groups should be prioritised more, and more "privileged" groups should be pushed down and insulted. And then there's stuff like affirmative action.

[–]Jeanpuetz 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Who are these "they" you speak of?

I've never met a legit Cultural theorist who advocates pushing down and insulting privileged groups. That's insane.

As for prioritizing oppressed groups, I'm actually all for that, in certain areas. In an ideal world where racism and sexism doesn't exist, we wouldn't need to do that. But the reality looks different. Think like affirmative action are a way to balance the scales, so to speak. I hope that in a couple of years we treat each others good enough that there is no need for actions like those anymore, but currently, I see no problem with giving oppressed groups a heads-up in some (obviously not all!) cases.

Jungle pygmies

I think it's because the representation of that group is totally inaccurate, with the whole bone through the hair and hoop through the nose thing.

Gonna be honest, I really hope you and the guy you are responding to are sarcastic.

Unfortunately I doubt they are.

Suck a dick. If you can't understand why that ad is problematic then you're literally fucking retarded. Do you need some help getting on social security disability?

Triggered much. Go to therapy dude.
