In today's Wrestling Observer Radio, when talking about Russev/Summer, Dave dropped this nugget about their storyline back in 2000 that was abruptly wrapped up at the Rumble in 2001.

"So in a backstage thing (meeting), HHH just said its not believable that she (Stephanie) would ever leave me for him (Angle). And so they just ended up dropping it because of that. And originally she was in fact supposed to go with him (Angle)"

In fairness, HHH came from the time period of bodybuilders above all in wrestling, so seeing a rather skinny, shorter dude being hotshotted into the main event, regardless of his credentials, obviously stuck in his craw, and I doubt he was the only one who felt that way back then.

Obviously, HHH over the years after working with guys like Hardy, Eddie, Benoit, Punk, Bryan and Jericho over and over now knows that guys that size can absolutely be believable heavyweight champions.

(Random Fact: Meltzer/Alverez once said that Vince would one day make Bryan champion because Vince honestly believes/believed that Bryan can/could take anybody in a fight if they made one mistake.)

I think Edge's immense popularity and success as a champion really sealed the deal. Not a bodybuilder guy, more of a pretty-boy villain. I don't think you could have even gotten the same kind of heat from a guy doing the same gimmick if he looked like Triple H.

Yeah, the reason it got over so well is that:

A) The humor in the segments was great and Angle's character was perfect for being the butt of most of the jokes

B) There was real on-screen chemistry between Kurt and Steph. You really believed they were friends.

C) It allowed HHH to be something other than serious CHAMPIONSHIP-AHHH TITLE-AHHH GUY

D) It created tons of intrigue in all the tag matches they were doing. Miscommunication and protecting Stephanie became a big part of the main events. You weren't really sure which way Steph was going to end up swinging either.

E) Steph was smoking hot during that period

That's why he added the qualifier of "without any reason", I can assume. Part of the illusion of wrestling is that in the story, these are supposed to be real matches in real competitions for real prizes. It doesn't make sense for someone to start doing high risk moves like moonsaults from atop cages unless there is a serious reason for doing so. That reason changes based on who's wrestling and the story of the match, but there needs to be a reason.

Then there's the fact that HHH's 2000 is better than anything Kurt Angle has ever done in his career. The rest is up for debate so let's not be hasty now.     I think that even though he didn't have the book, clearly he had some creative influence and didn't want to pull a Kevin Sullivan and book the end of his real-life relationship.     In 2002, the Triple H vs. Jericho storyline was originally supposed to be that, while Hunter was out rehabbing his quad, Steph had an affair with Y2J. This would lead to a heel tandem of Jericho and Stephanie, with Jericho getting nuclear heat by being an obedient boyfriend to his former nemesis/an adulteress.

    HHH put the kibosh on it, insisting that he was "too smart" a babyface not to know that Stephanie was having an affair behind his back. So, we ended up with what we got: a situation Jericho himself described as being "pussy-whipped, without the pussy."
