Cool idea! I wonder if a nfc tag hidden in a watch or a sweatband could be used instead so that the user doesn't have to put their thumb in a specific location each time, and it wouldn't need an exposed scanner.

Just have a remote hidden in your pocket. It doesn't need to be high tech. That way you can just pick it up and not wait. Also that guy wouldn't have been able to move it if it didn't rely on the touch sensitive handle to turn on the magnet.

obviously the finger print scanner was interesting, and i'm sure it was not easy to implement, which is cool and challenging.

but it made the hammer disengage awkwardly as he'd have to wait for it to process his finger print.

with a remote and a simple switch it would have been a lot easier, faster, cheaper, and more reliable, to implement.

and that would have made the gag look a lot better.

considering this device's only purpose was this gag, i think the remote would have been a better choice on almost all counts.

the fingerprint sensor is cool, but i think he should have kept it simple.

These guys missed a great prank opportunity, put it down, seemily unattended and watch people make a spectale trying to lift it as they pass by, then the worthy guy comes by and "acts" to pick it up (not obviously lining this thumb up) boggling peoples minds.

When I worked in structural steel fabrication I did this to someone with a mag drill (a drill that uses a powerful electromagnet to hold itself to the metal being drilled)

Someone told a coworker to come over and get the drill I was using, but the magnet was still switched on. He grabbed it and strained as hard as he could and it wouldn't budge. I walked over and covertly switched the magnet off and lifted it with one hand, asking if he was having a problem. To give some perspective, I'm 5'4" and weighed about 135lbs., this guy was ~6'5" and 250lbs.

I sat it back down while switching the magnet back on and walked away. We watched him strugle and laughed for a good minute before I finally walked over and showed him what was up.

tl;dr: Steel workers are jerks, but sometimes you have to make your own fun.
