The Sarkeesian hatebase just jumped on it like flies on rotten meat, because it was another progressive woman tangentially related to video games to attack and abuse. [The video game stuff only got roped in later as an excuse for the harassment after the fact, hence "tangentially".]

I think even a lot of Gators are prepared to admit that "Its not just about video games" anymore, to them its about something bigger.

Contrary to what Gators may claim, its more or less a refusal to accept feminist influences on their hobby or for that matter any left wing 'intrusion" into the gaming industry.

Many would argue that its even more than this, perhaps GG alongside MRA is the beginning of a wider reactionary movement against the rise of Social Justice and Feminism.

Or perhaps its a bunch of "gamers", that are xenophobic to non traditional gamer (casual, mobile, women, etc) invading their hobby and they're just mad.

We have utterly wrecked these fuckers. None of these hashtags contain any of their shitty propaganda. Seriously, look at #ImagineAFeministInternet, one of the top results was an image of someone being blocked by Anita Sarkeesian. Another was a communist flag Enter key on the keyboard.

I have a friend who unfortunately used to support gamergate (they bought into the whole #notyourshield thing). Then fortunately snapped out of it and realized how fucking awful they are.

Apparently, people would get ousted or banned from GG spaces like 8chan and KiA a while back for being "ethics cucks" (aka "ethics only co-opting") or actually talking about video games.

In fact, if you search KiA for "ethics only" you'll find several heated debates about it and people decrying talking about video games and instead trying to inspire others to take down the evil ess jay doubleyews!

It's very easy to get caught in the whole 'women are stealing our vidya games' thing and end up in a community like that. I know I started to buy into at first. But then you see a bit of blatant racism over here, some rape apologists over there and find out that this is the sort of shit your community believes. It's not about ethics in video game journalism. It has never been about ethics. It's about a group of bored, lonely men with no social identity or external validation finding satisfaction in shitting on women. Then they project their internal strife onto others, and drink enough cleaning fluids to render themselves completely unable to process any amount of irony.

It's not about ethics. It's about toxic privilege eating these people from the inside when everything society promised them was taken by those who actually deserved it.

Sometimes I even think about feeling pity for them because they've been so deeply caught in the system they can't even see it. Like they've been taught how to be hateful and jealous and envious and externalize their inadequacies that they can't even afford a moment of introspection to figure out the system messed with them to the point they're helping it propagate.

But then I remember that we were all taught about empathy when we were children and they choose to not exercise any of it so I chuckle about their pitiable tiny worlds.
