American Sniper was the top-grossing movie of 2015.

Iraq war movies historically bomb no matter how much critical acclaim they recieve--ie The Hurt Locker & Three Kings. Plus everyone was ruing how the box office was being dominated by franchises and comic book movies then American Sniper comes out of nowhere to become number one with a bullet.

All of those bomb movies about Iraq were pretty much the same. "America sucks, soldiers are rapists, who are we to judge?, etc" (which is probably why critics liked them). American Sniper shows Americans as good guys and it makes a fortune.

American Sniper was also super boring and had nothing to say about the war or the character. People just wanted to feel good about the war by seeing a dude who shoot other dudes.

i think it said plenty about the character. showed his feeling of duty to his team, his survivor guilt, trying to be a civilian again, the tension these issues caused in his married life, struggling with deciding who to trust in the war. these are real things vets face.

and honestly it was refreshing to finally not have yet another war movie bang us over the head with what we all already know. war is bad, us is evil, etc. its not thought provoking anymore when litterally every war movie says the same thing.

Exactly. Anyone that thinks the movie was just about how great America is, completely missed the point.

Yeah I have had someone tell me it says nothing except yeah kill bad guys woo america. I think they just ignored all the parts about his PTSD and trouble living back in the states.

It was also about that, but yeah I get your point.

I don't know I feel like American Sniper was pretty guilty of bang us over the head with what we all already know, as far as things like survivor's guilt, mental trauma, returning to civilian life, etc. And I don't think it did it in that great of a way. Those have themes been tackled to death. And American Sniper didn't bring anything new to the table. I can thing of a ton of other movies that dealt with those themes better in a smarter and more emotional manner. Movies like The Hurt Locker, Brothers, Born on the Fourth of July, Apocalypse Now and even Forrest Gump to an extent. The only difference is that American Sniper didn't demonize America or the armed forces like other movies do (The exception on the list being Forrest Gump). I think that's something that really resonated with a lot of people who are tired of Americans being portrayed as these evil aggressors. People who want to be proud of their Country. People who are tired of America being shamed and having to apologize.

i dont disagree with your points, im only answering that the movie didnt say anything about the character. i think the movie did try to cover too much for its length so alot of it ended up feeling shallow. definitely agree with your last point though.

I said almost this exact same thing when the movie came out and was downvoted because apparently I fell for the "propaganda".

did you even see the movie? the whole point of the movie was his struggle with PTSD. there's no "feel good" shooting like some cheesy WWII movie. he almost has to kill a little kid to save his unit, then feels even worse because he was about to go through with it before the kid put down the weapon.

A movie about a man that simply couldn't help himself if it meant he had to stop helping others to the extent that he survived 4 tours in the Army before being killed by a fellow veteran?

I think it says a shit load about the character more so than the actual military or war.

The most important thing American Sniper had to say about war was that you could be on a cell phone with someone who is in war. That is such a product of our times that it says more about the absurdity of modern war than everything else in that movie. That and how he ended up dying which was completely cut from the movie.

People just wanted to feel good about the war by seeing a dude who shoot other dudes.

After every other war movie, can you blame them?

They could watch Enemy at the Gates then. Much better movie.

They've probably already seen it a dozen times.

Uhh, yes. Wanting to watch a dude shooting people so you can feel good about an unnecessary and illegal war. Yes you bloody well can blame them because they're fucking idiots.

I thought going to Iraq was a stupid idea too, but what's up with the "illegal war" buzzword? Murder is illegal yet in war, killing is war's backbone.

Still shocking though. Last time we had an old-fashioned word-of-mouth hit was My Big Fat Greek Wedding in 2002.

Old fashioned word of mouth for American Sniper? I saw ads for it everywhere. On TV, on Hulu, posters. But who knows, maybe that was just my zip code.

I saw ads all over the place too, then there was a some controversy that kept it in the news for awhile.

I think he's implying that MBFGW is the last occurrence, and that was 13 years ago. American Sniper was not a word of mouth hit especially considering who its Director, Prodcution company, and lead actor are.

I can't believe that movie made that much, especially on a 5 mill budget.

While it wasn't the biggest grossing movie ever, Edge of Tomorrow (or Live Die Repeat, or whatever they re-branded to) was pretty much word of mouth, at least when it came to the sudden post-release hype.

American Sniper was a word-of-mouth hit? are you fucking kidding me?

Please explain how American Sniper was a "word of mouth" hit? I've never seen more advertising for a movie.

Well that's just a damn good movie.

Hollywood can't seem to comprehend that we don't like copious amounts of white-guilt in our entertainment. Like, I came here to have fun, not to be insulted...

American Sniper was also advised by the Department of Defense Entertainment Liaison Office.

Three Kings is actually really, really good and not any of the things you said and you should watch it

I just watched the Hurt Locker. I didn't get any of that. No one was raped. The overall feeling I got from that movie was that they don't want us there anymore than we want to be there.

Also, the dude took that job because he wanted to save people.

From a civilian standpoint, it was a cool movie.

From a veterans standpoint, fucking awful.

"America sucks, soldiers are rapists, who are we to judge?, etc"

Which movies are like this?

American Sniper was a boring movie with nothing to say.

"America good!" is kind of oversimplifying the conflict in Iraq.

Though I guess in the end, it is an utterly pointless movie, so it's a bit like the Iraq War in that sense.

But that's not what it said. It was more about the eponymous sniper. The only real issue that people have is with the guy looking at the TV broadcasting 9/11 and wanting to join - which even then is something that did actually happen with enlisted soldiers at the time.

Like I said, it was boring fucking movie.
